Big Ten Conference Divisions

[censored] Penn State

seriously, [censored] them

like they know a damn thing about what a rivalry is

I hope they turn into the backwater piece of [censored] football program that they are once Paterno dies, struggling to be relevant on an east coast that doesn't care about college football, cut off culturally and competitively from the rest of the Big Ten, all but guaranteeing Ohio State a bid in the conference championship game against Michigan or Nebraska each year

stupid [censored]ers ran a cake walk independent schedule forever (Temple as a rival, what a [censored]ing joke), have won as many Big Ten championships as Northwestern since joining the conference, and they have the gull to pretend like what they want [censored]ing matters

[censored] penn state, and [censored] expanding east in the next round of teams

"The Big Ten network has made each team an equal partner" ROFL

Who here thinks that anyone would have picked up the Big Ten network if tOSU and Michigan weren't in the conference? Do they think Indiana or Purdue on tv is drawing the same ratings as when tOSU and Michigan are on?

Haven't these idiots ever heard of the saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?" The Big Ten would be in conference usa territory today without tOSU Michigan, even with just Nebraska/Penn State (neither of whom would have joined the conference if Mich/tOSU weren't there the conference wouldn't be THAT good.

How come the Columbus Dispatch is one of the few publications in the state of Ohio and Michigan not having a commentary or any sort of story on the pending move?

The publication didn't even have Tuesday's AP cut-and-dry story about having problems with the series.

Did they get Urban Meyer'd/Orlando Sentinel by OSU?

fuck Penn State

I'm a big fan of kicking Penn State out of the conference and replacing them with Pitt.

And whenever you meet a douche bag 'Nit fan (which is pretty much all of them) keep that in mind the next time you see someone advocating adding Rutgers to the conference.

Peas in a pod.

Shit.....do you see how they schedule their nonconference now? Imagine that for every game. They'd set a new consecutive wins record in 3 years.

I'm hot about this shit. Ever since I was a kid, we would watch and scout Michigan every week to build up to The Game. It's how Woody did it. It's how Bo did it.

And now they might play in fucking October. And again on some artificial turf under a Dome in December. I can't help but dry heave on my keyboard. Just kill the rivalry now.

I apologize

Moving into the Big 10 with you guys did the same darn thing that Texas did to us 15 years ago. If they take the OSU-UM game away, then they go against everything that made making the move attractive from a tradition standpoint, and it becomes about money.

Although Doc Tom will do what's best for Nebraska, don't doubt he'll weigh in very heavily on keeping this game intact.

This move wouldn't just like hindsight, it would lack foresight. For the next ten years or so "the game" (lowercase) would still be a heated affair. After that though, you would start seeing the first generation of kids come through not just watching, but PLAYING IN THE GAME who not have know what it was like to have one completely ruin the other's season. Instead you'd have, "I remember that one time where Ohio State played M*ch*g*n twice. Ohio State beat them, but then M*ch*g*n won their next six to get to the championship game and Ohio State beat them again, but not by as much the second time."

I guess this is what happens when you have a pizza boy and an ND grad as stewards of this great rivalry. :(

Beano Cook thinks that Ohio State and Michigan will be in the same division on the ESPN CFB podcast. So yippee

Everyone can rest well now.

I still remember when Beano picked Ohio State to play in the BCS Championship Game prior to 2002 (against Tennessee, I think).

Even a blind squirrel can find a Buckeye now and then.

Same guy picked Ron Powlus to win 4 Heisman Trophies.

You're seeing the preparation for the 16 team conference.

Ohio State is essentially leaving the Big Ten & getting shuffled into JoePa's dream eastern conference.

Why stop with football?

You can move the Red Sox to the NL East and put the Mets in the AL East. Philadelphia needs an "northeastern partner", and the Mets are the Yankees "natural rival" anyway. Plus, you can always make sure the Yankees & Red Sox meet in interleague play, plus they could face off in the World Series ZOMG!!!!1!11!!1!

So I've been trying to think about the motivations behind this, and the above two posts got me thinking about what will happen if, more likely when more teams are added. I'm sure they won't put just to make this as dramatic as possible I'll act like Penn State gets their way and we go straight east the Big Ten adds something like Syracuse, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and Maryland in the new Big Ten there are two ways to split the conference with geography or MLB style.

If it is straight geography the border moves from Indian/Illinois to Ohio/Indian. This set up takes Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State away from the traditional Big Ten more than it happens to the western teams.

D1 East:

Maryland
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Rutgers
Syracuse
Rutgers
Virginia Tech

D2: West:

Minnesota
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Nebraska
Northwestern
Purdue
Wisconsin

If you do it MLB style you kind of pair them up:

Illinois/Northwestern
Indiana/Purdue
Iowa/Nebraska
Maryland/Virginia Tech
Michigan/Michigan State
Minnesota/Wisconsin
Ohio State/Penn State
Rutgers/Syracuse

Then split them:

D1 Random Name:

Illinois
Iowa
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue
Rutgers

D2 Random Name:

Indiana
Michigan State
Nebraska
Northwestern
Penn State
Syracuse
Virginia Tech
Wisconsin

Worse for travel costs, better for having all of the teams travel around the region possibly making the conference feel more united and less like two new separate conferences.

I don't know that I even think this is a good idea, I've honestly been for the Indiana/Illinois boarder split but if we must go to 16 I think something like this could at least be interesting.

Right now if you took out the added eastern teams but set it up just like this in preparation you would get:

D1 Random Name:

Illinois
Iowa
Michigan
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue

D2 Random Name:

Indiana
Michigan State
Nebraska
Northwestern
Penn State
Wisconsin

Well, presumably the BTN has made all schools equal partners in the sense that the current revenue situation doesn't anyone them to pull rank with the threat of taking their ball in going home. The BTN is the biggest, brightest, bounciest ball in the game right now and everybody in the conference owns a piece of it. I can see where it would put the big boys in a position to have the Indianas and Minnesotas and Penn States call their bluff.

On the other hand, The BTN is successful precisely because of what partners like Ohio State and M*ch*g*n bring to the table. To paraphrase Animal Farm, "Some members are more equal than others."

If the decision makers have the foresight to align teams based on the prospective entry of others, why can't they have the foresight to see what their idea will do to their most valuable property?

Heck, an Ohio State has been in almost every single game following the televised practices this year (Illinois, Purdue, Ohio State, etc.).

Here's another quote that may be more apt in regards to the growing situation,

"This deal is getting worse all the time." - Lando Calrissian

They're moving the Kentucky Derby from the first Saturday in May to the middle of the summer. They still run it once a year.

Ohio State, Michigan and the Big Ten only listen when there's money involved. A hit in the wallet is the only way they listen.
