Big Ten Championship Game

Comments by Delany have this taking place in December 2011. Says they'll likely select a single site for a short-term contract and then review alternatives. Also said within 2-4 years we should be moving to 9-game conference schedule.

It is sounding like Indy. I guess that means the first two years with Nebraska in the league, we will all play 8 game conference schedules and slowly weed out those futre OOC games. We don't have many future years with 4 but I assume there are alot of Big 10 teams that do?

The Championship Game should be here, of course.

I really like the idea of a rotating-site for the CCG. 1st few years in Indy, maybe New York City (it'd be fun for the players to visit cities like that), Maybe the Baltimore/DC area, Boston, Chicago. I think the bigger the cities, the better for the Big Ten.

Having the game played on the campus stadiums is difficult because it could end up a home game for one of the contestants. Although I would prefer that stadiums like Camp Randall and the 'Shoe get to host it, I just don't see it happening. With that in mind, exposure is my next big preference thus the big cities.

CHICAGO -- Commissioner Jim Delany expects the Big Ten to hold a championship game next season, when Nebraska joins and brings the league to 12 members.

He also said teams will likely play nine conference games instead of eight in the future to help preserve rivalries.

"I think there's a real consensus among our athletic directors to do that," Delany said Monday at the league's football media days. "How quickly we can do that? We can't do that in the next year or two. I'm hopeful we can make some progress for years three, four. Hopefully, it's not three or four, but it could be depending on the contractual commitments."

The timetable for the championship game is sooner.

Delany expects there to be one next season, although he's not sure where it would be played and if the site would rotate. He also wants to sell naming rights to the game.

Delany said he's spoken to representatives from potential host sites and Chicago is in the running. But he's not sure he'll have time in the next four months to make visits. The conference could choose one for the first game and then tour venues in the spring.

Even with the pursuit of additional schools on hold, integrating a 12th team is a multi-pronged issue. The most urgent matter is deciding how to divide teams into divisions to allow for a championship game, which Delany expects to be played starting in 2011.

With league powers Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State among the eastern-most schools, a geography-based setup would be problematic.
"Geography is important," Delany said. "It's going to be a consideration, but it's not the first consideration. Our athletic directors, many of whom coached and some of whom played, want competitive equality as best they can get it."

Delany said the league would look at data starting from 1993,when Penn State began Big Ten competition, to assess the strength of each school and then to place them in equally balanced divisions.
As for whether Ohio State and Michigan would be placed in the same division to avoid having those archrivals playing in a championship game, Delany said he "doesn't want to prejudge it" until the athletic directors finish their discussions.

The first Big Ten championship football game will be in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The game is scheduled to be played in December of 2011.

Lucas Oil Stadium was one of several sites that expressed interest in hosting the game.

?We are excited to work with Indiana Sports Corp and Lucas Oil Stadium to finalize an agreement to hold the inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game in the city of Indianapolis,? Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said in a news release.
?We felt at this time it was important to identify a site for the first championship game and then spend more time with other cities and venues with respect to both our basketball tournaments and the football championship games in the future. The city of Indianapolis has been an outstanding host for our basketball tournaments, and we look forward to holding our first Big Ten Football Championship Game in Lucas Oil Stadium.?

For the players it would be cool, I just don't think its a good idea from a financial standpoint to leave the geographic barriers of the conference. You have to think about it from a fans perspective where they are going to be looking at going to this game and potentially the Rose Bowl/NCG if their team wins.

I don't really think "exposure" is a huge thing, you could have this game in some cornfield in Iowa and the media is still going to be there

the future potential of rutgers or syracuse make the meadowlands a viable option, imo.

The Big Ten has reached an agreement with Fox Sports to broadcast the league?s football championship game from 2011-16.

Honestly, Fox has been an outright disappointment in broadcasting the college football game. I am aware that the network has desperately (emphasis on desperate) wanted to break into the NCAA FBS broadcast scene, but ESPN/ABC just do it better than everyone else.

The Big Ten title game will be huge, great and a big money maker for the schools. But I just won't hold my breath on the broadcast being very top-notch.

After ESPN cut the last 2 minutes of the Ohio State/Florida men's basketball game (which was the premier game during their 24 hour marathon of games-- 2 top 10 teams playing each other) for the ending of UCONN/Baylor women's basketball game, I strongly support Fox broadcasting the B10 Championship Game despite the broadcast being worse.

[censored] ESPN. They're too big for their britches.
