Big Ten Basketball Thread

It will be a long, dreary winter of Nebraska basketball. Not only are we simply not good, but we have a bunch of injuries that are benching some players and hobbling others. Our whole Big Ten run is going to be like this.

We sat at the end of the bench at a game last week and it was painfully obvious that the players are already mentally checked out of the season, and that Doc has basically lost this team.

Your AD should have fired your coach the second he made those comments whining about how tough the B1G is. The one thing you don't do in sports is concede defeat before the game is played...and he pretty much conceded the entire fuckin' season. Ridiculous.

I agree. For a moment there I thought their coach was named Jim O'Brien.

Well, Doc is a good guy, but he's just not the guy for Nebraska. We've never had a "good" men's BB coach. We'll have to see what Osborne does with him. I didn't think he'd fire our old baseball coach, Mike Anderson, but he got canned last year.

We're building a new arena in Lincoln, scheduled to open in 2013. My guess is, Doc is gone at the end of this year if they want to begin building for that arena right now, or at the latest next year so the new coach can recruit to the new arena.

You had Danny Nee back in the day and he was a pretty good coach. Not to worry you guys get to play Ped State this year so you should have one or two wins this season.

Their point guard is excellent:lol: I cannot wait until Craft gets to play against him. Their big man is pretty decent but should have gotten ejected when he hit the guy from Minnesota with an elbow. However, any:bonk: Minnesota basketball player gets hit by an opponent's elbow is a good thing for the sake of history.

Osborne is on record as saying Doc deserves the opportunity to recruit to the new facilities, so at this point it looks like he'll be back next year. Osborne also gave Doc an extention last year with an increased buy-out clause. The coaching world thinks Doc is a very good coach, but it does appear he and his team have already checked out for the season.

This was supposed to be Doc's deepest and most talented team at Nebraska. Man, it's going to be a long winter....

Michigan State sets the bar

In Thad Matta?s first seven seasons as Ohio State men?s basketball coach, the Buckeyes won at least a share of the Big Ten championship four times. Only two other programs in the past 30 years have done as well.

Ohio State also won the Big Ten tournament three times under Matta. No other school won more than one.

The Buckeyes won 85 conference games in that span. No team won more.

Ohio State finished the 2010-11 regular season ranked No. 1 nationally and was the No. 1 seed overall in the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes are ranked No. 2 this season and are a heavy favorite to win another Big Ten championship as they open conference play tonight against Northwestern.

For a decade, Michigan State set the performance bar in the Big Ten. Has the bar been passed to Ohio State as the 2011-12 conference season begins?

In a sport in which only March seems to matter ? or at least be remembered ? some say the Buckeyes still have something to prove.
