Men?s basketball: Big Ten breakdown
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday December 27, 2011
This is the time of the season Big Ten men?s basketball coaches profess to love, a chance to match themselves and their teams against their conference brethren, 10 weeks of demanding tests in many of the nation?s largest arenas and before some of its most vocal fans.
Most of the coaches profess to love it, anyway. The new guy on the block evidently didn?t get the memo discouraging candor.
?Unfortunately ... it looks like it?s the best league in the country,? Nebraska coach Doc Sadler said. ?That?s not good as far as I?m concerned. But I?m happy for all the fans and the other schools.?
Indeed, the Big Ten is the best conference in the country, according to the Rating Percentage Index, as it prepares to open another season tonight. And it?s not even close.
The Big Ten?s lead in the index over the second-place Atlantic Coast Conference is greater than the gap separating the next five conferences combined.
The Big Ten won its annual series with the ACC for the third year in a row this year, by a best-ever 8-4 margin.
?Not that it means the world, but it seems like it does when we lose it, so we better take some credit when we win it,? Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said.
Five Big Ten teams, led by No. 2 Ohio State, are ranked among the top 18 in the country in the Associated Press poll. A sixth is just outside the top 25.
Tonight, they begin eating their own.
?It?s going to be a grind,? Sadler said. ?Eighteen games, first of all, is difficult, something I?ve never been through. The physical play, the home-court advantage, all the things the Big Ten is noted for, is not something I?m looking forward to.?
The rest of us are.
Here is one man?s prediction of how it will shake out come March 4:
