Big Ten Basketball Thread

Brent and Lavin probably won't talk too much about Sampson because Brent will be talking too much about the best places in Bloomington to get a good drink:beer:

If White plays and he is healthy (which I doubt), I think that IU will probably win because Purdue really doesn't have anyone with that size to stop him even though they play very stifling man-to-man defense I just don't see anyone on their team who can stop White.

I am not that impressed with Indiana's guard play and when we played Purdue they really pressed our guards and made it very difficult on Butler so that will be interesting to watch. I also think that Purdue will get some good looks on the offensive end because IU is not that good of a defensive team. The key to the game will be if White is healthy IMO

Sampson situation doesn't slow Indiana

Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kelvin Sampson couldn't understand why he was still being asked if his problems over possible NCAA violations were a distraction for his team.
Eric Gordon scored 22 points to lead No. 15 Indiana to a 77-68 victory over No. 14 Purdue last night in the Hoosiers' last game before the completion of the school's investigation into accusations Sampson committed major rules violations.
"I think the way our team is playing answers all the questions," he said. "I think our play speaks for itself."
D.J. White, who had 19 points and 15 rebounds despite playing on a sprained left knee, said the Hoosiers (22-4, 11-2) aren't thinking about what Sampson's future holds.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The knee was injured before the season began. The torn cartilage will be removed and the knee assessed for further damage once the season is over.
The hip pointer occurred a month ago, when the hip caught the elbow of a shooter trying to draw contact.
The front tooth bent back into his mouth two weeks ago. Another chance meeting with a shooter's elbow. Cuts inside the mouth had to be stitched. He offered to go back in the game; the coach declined. The tooth was pulled back in place the next morning after an all-night trip home. The dentist decides Thursday whether it can be saved.

Illini face tough challenge tonight in No. 11 Badgers

By MARK TUPPER
Lee News Service | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 | No comments posted.

CHAMPAIGN | Consistency, or the lack of it, has been one of the nagging buzz words during this bleak Illini basketball season.

Which is odd, since for the past several years, Illinois has been the Big Ten Conference's model of consis-tency.

When one thinks about the league's most consistent programs in recent seasons, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State and perhaps Indiana come to mind.

Well, Illinois has finished ahead of Michigan State in the Big Ten standings for six straight years.

Illinois has finished ahead of Wisconsin five of the past seven seasons (with one tie).

Illinois has finished ahead of Ohio State in five of the past seven seasons (the Buckeyes voided all victo-ries in two seasons due to NCAA sanctions).

I just find it strange how teams shoot lights out from 3-point land against us and when they play against other teams in the Big 10 they don't even hit a good percentage of their free throws. Purdue was a good example last night and their three-point shots were not shot under big-time duress and their free-throw shooting was ridiculous. Can't they shoot like that when they played us:(

Selection Sunday is fast approaching. For a couple of Big Ten teams fighting to get into the NCAA tournament, it may be Somber Sunday if things do not turn around soon.

Some provincial Midwest fans tend to get defensive whenever they feel their sports teams are slighted. However, you cannot dance around the cold, hard truth when it comes to this year's field of 65.

Only four Big Ten teams may be in when pairings are released two weeks from Sunday.

Here is one man's view on how the league's postseason contenders stand.

THEY'RE IN

Purdue, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State.

BIG TEN DOWN THE STRETCH | Indiana, Purdue and Wisconsin might end up in a tie

February 28, 2008
BY HERB GOULD [email protected]

Big Ten preseason favorite Michigan State has come up short because of inconsistent road play. Defending champion Ohio State has had a decent season after losing monster freshmen Greg Oden and Michael Conley Jr. but now is reduced to fighting for its NCAA tournament life.
That leaves three teams standing with two conference losses apiece: Indiana, Wisconsin and Purdue, which beat Minnesota xx-xx on Wednesday to create a three-way tie at 13-2.
Who's going to weather the last 10 days and capture the Big Ten championship?
