Big Ten Basketball Thread

Don't forget Indiana was also at the Illini's mercy with Shaun Pruitt at the line for 2 shots and no time left.

I'd like to think the Badgers beat Purdue at home if Trevon Hughes is not seriously hobbled and sabotaging UW's chances as a result. So things all kind of evened out besides Purdue's luck. I'm looking forward to when they are knocked off their perch because their fans act like they are completely new to both success and the game of basketball.

Duke's academic status is at least equal to Northwestern's; it hasn't prevented them from being a perennial top-5 team.
I know that has been argued for years. Maybe it's the coach... Duke's coach or maybe it's Evanston or Tobacco Road. I don't know but Northwestern has always been bad no matter who the coach. Maybe Duke sneak some athletes in under their admissions policy... just a thought:)

Stanford has higher admissions standards then either Duke or Northwestern and look at them in all sports.

All elite academic institutions relax their admission standards for athletes they covet. Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn -- they all do.

Final month: What to watch for

BIG TEN BIDS
For a league as historically strong as the Big Ten, this is shaping up to be a rather weak season when it comes to NCAA Tournament credentials.
The problem is the bottom of the Big Ten, which usually consists of teams ranked from 51-100 in the Ratings Percentage Index, looks more like the Mountain West Conference or the Horizon League, with five teams ranked from 101-200 and Northwestern worse than 201.
When the Selection Committee evaluates the "team sheets" it relies upon for selection and seeding, it will see opponent RPI data broken down into four categories: opponents ranked from 1-50, 51-100, 101-200 and 201-above.

Big night from Gordon lifts Hoosiers

Sunday, February 17, 2008 3:37 AM

Associated Press

Eric Gordon scored 28 points and broke Indiana's freshman scoring record last night, leading the 13th-ranked Hoosiers to an 80-61 rout of No. 10 Michigan State in Bloomington, Ind.
With coach Kelvin Sampson's job status in question after being accused of five major NCAA infractions Wednesday, Indiana (21-4, 10-2) desperately needed a victory to stay in contention for the Big Ten title and to salvage something from one of the bleakest weeks in the program's history.

No. 19 Purdue 71, Northwestern 56 -- Freshman E'Twaun Moore scored a season-high 28 points and Purdue (21-5, 12-1) won in Evanston, Ill., to remain in first place.

No. 15 Wisconsin 65, Minnesota 56 -- Marcus Landry scored 12 points to lead five Wisconsin players in double figures against Minnesota in Madison, Wis.

Penn State 52, Illinois 51 -- Talor Battle hit two free throws with seven seconds left for Penn State (12-12, 4-8) in State College, Pa.

Status of IU's White uncertain

The status of Indiana senior forward D.J. White, who injured his left knee Saturday night against Michigan State, remained muddy Sunday as university medical staff awaited further evaluation.

White grabbed the back of his left leg above the knee with 4:55 to play in the first half of Saturday's 80-61 victory over the Spartans. White did not return to the game.
He was scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test early Sunday, but medical equipment issues forced the test to be postponed until later in the day.
A university release Sunday said White is taking treatment for the knee and an update is expected today. IU hosts Big Ten leader Purdue on Tuesday.

Big game tonight in Bloomington.

Can DJ White play on his injured knee, and be effective?

Can the crowd keep IU in the game and keep their minds off their coaches future?

Will Purdue suddenly realize how close they are to winning a B10 title and play like the inexperienced, youthful team they are?

I think Painter would love to put a nail in Sampsons coffin by coming into Bloomington and getting a win. I would be suprised if IU can play as well as they did against MSU, as I would think the Sampson debacle has to be getting to them.

I really like this Purdue team (what little I've seen of them) they seem to have some warriors on that team who will do whatever it takes to win, their guys also seem very unselfish and have quickly accepted their roles. They are not incredibly athletic, but they have good size and play defense like their hair is on fire. It'll still be a tough one though.
