I don't think for a second it was a factor. I could see a school like VaTech trying to put themselves in the best position finachally before another school takes that slot. I could see why some would wait for UVA too; if there was a chance for VaTech and UNC I'd consider that a win. You get more grads with VaTech each year than you do with UVA. Sure UVA is the better school but the difference there is no where near the difference between UNC and NC State.Alvarez added one other school was interested in joining the Big Ten but the league presidents were not interested because of the team?s academic profile.
He did not identify that school.

Here is is list of AAU schools. If the university you want to join the B1G is not on this list (FSU), you can forget about it right now. This expansion is about football, but the B1G is not going to bring in non AAU schools.
If you look at this list here are the most likely.
Boston U.
Georgia Tech
Kansas
Duke
UNC
Virginia
Vanderbilt
University of Toronto
If the goal is to expand East the two choices would be UNC and Virginia. I don't think Georgia Tech is too far out milage wise, but geographically it is on an island compared to the rest of the B1G. Vanderbilt would be the best for academics, but has some of the same properties as mentioned with GT. I don't know if Kansas would add anything to the B1G. You can cross off Duke and Vanderbilt if they only want to take state schools. Probably not Toronto, but it would open up the untapped Canadian market.
That leaves us with Boston U, Virginia and UNC to choose from. I think Virginia and UNC would be the best bets. Virginia would get you any of the DC market that Maryland does not cover and they are very good academically.
