the way I see it, the SEC feels its football is so good that it doesn't need TV market size as much as it needs more great football programs. It intends on selling itself as the premier football conference that will be watched from coast to coast by lovers of college football. The Big12 feels it can ride the coat tails of the SEC because it's probably the closes to the SEC in terms of all football all the time.

The BigTen seems to be turning its attention toward the business side of the equation....namely, snagging programs that will draw huge chunks of television revenue due to footprint. Therefore, the conference as a whole will be solid and strong and perhaps not as flashy or stellar....kind of the Midwestern way.

It all hinges on Notre Dame for the B1G. If ND says yes, then Delany has a lot of options and all of them no-lose. If ND says no, then Delany will seem to be forced to take one or the other path of best quality football vs best business opportunity....which could end up looking bad in a few years or could end up being brilliant. (note: adding Nebraska looked brilliant in 2010, but now it looks like Mizzou may have been a better choice than Nebraska).

scenario #1 - ND accepts an invitation from B1G
...then we immediately ask Maryland, UVa, , UNC, Kansas, and Rutgers....we'll take the first 4

scenario #2 - ND turns down B1G
...then we ask Maryland, UVa, UNC, NCSU, VaTech, Kansas, Rutgers

scenario #3 - screw ND
...immediately ask Maryland, UNC, UVa, and Kansas

scenario #4 - ND says no
...no further expansion for now

Fucking domers. ND to the Big Ten is the biggest no-brainer in college football: the Big Ten wants it, the non-ND fans want it, and ND's own faculty is begging for it.

Domers being domers, they will now go anywhere BUT the Big Ten just to spite us.

Prob gets worse for you when you consider that UNC, probably the best mix of athletics and academics, could end up in the SEC :wink2:

Just having fun with you!

B1G is the only athletic conference where academic chops mean anything at all. And here, it's a pretty big deal.

Boise and BYU will end up in the PAC-32 eventually, many other second-rate universities will go to the semipro SEC and always-unstable Big XXVIII, and Tejas will eventually end up in the B1G maybe - if we expand again. UVA also an excellent choice, and GaTech not the worst choice, for our league. But I think our current 12-school lineup is perfect.

Notre Dame is not a research institution. I don't care where they end up, and it won't be in the B1G for reasons expressed eloquently by ORD. Wherever it is will be a better fit for their academic and athletic mediocrity.

Delany will get what he wants. He is unbelievable at manipulating the situation. The SEC is "distracted" by football concerns only, while Delany is concerned about the bigger picture. UVa, GT, UNC (if they will split from Duke), ND (if they get over themselves) would be good choices. This expands the BIG into the South, expands recruiting areas, they can have good athletics (not necessarily football) and maintains (at least UVa and GT) the academic requirements.

I don't see Texas in the Big Ten, not after we turned them down in the '90s. I just don't think they would be willing to "crawl back" with their ego. That said, I would love to add Texas, UVA, ND and BC. Great academics + great research + solid football. Getting BC might also force some of the New Englanders up here to get off the SEC's jock strap.

As much as we dislike Slive he gets what he wants too. Slive is NOT distracted by football concerns only. Just perusing other boards supposedly UF/UGA/VANDY have told Slive they want to add UVA and UNC. Mizzou and TAMU weren't football only - they were market driven acquisitions.

Let's not sell Slive short in all of this.

Texas A&M was about Gene Stallings and Missouri was a reach in my opinion -- an overreaction. Slive should have waited to see how things played out (like Delany has). The SEC steals two from the Big 12 and then creates the SEC-Big 12 partnership (odd move and clearly not the result of long term thinking). If the rumors turn out to be correct, the Big 12 gets FSU and Clemson -- I think the Big 12 comes out ahead in that trade. Slive may have a somewhat bigger view, but most SEC types (the schools and certainly their fans) want to make it only about football. I will take Delany against Slive anyday.

We'll have to disagree then.

TAMU was more than Gene Stallings. Texas is a recruiting rich state and market rich state. While UT dominates TAMU is a strong second and not that bad academically. This was a strong pick-up by the SEC.

Mizzou is the 2nd of the two. But it gives the SEC access to the KC and STL markets. Not a bad pickup for them. We already had access to STL so it was lesser value to us.

You can bet the SEC's next move is somewhere in the VA/NC area.

Horseshit.

WVU was voted down by ACC members due to academics.

Okie & Okie Jr were rejected by the Pac over academics.

Boise and BYU will end up in the PAC-32 eventually
BSU will never be invited unless the academics make a quantum leap.

BYU will NEVER end up in the Pac. Period.

Notre Dame is not a research institution.
Which is why MUP rates them among the Top 25 research institutions in the US ahead of Purdue, Sparty, Indiana, Iowa & UNL.

Yes they only do about $100M a year on research but what they focus on is highly regarded.

Remember the importance of 'markets' is not directly comparable between the B1G & SEC.

The B1G owns a network that it can monetize through carriages rates...the SEC doesn't.
