To put it bluntly, fuck the east. I don't see why people are hanging on to that so much. Other than giving Penn State more recruiting access on the coast I don't see how expanding east benefits the conference in any way, especially if Notre Dame is already on board.

Unless it's Pitt.

That would piss off the Nits to no end and that is always a good thing.

I agree completely, you can sub in "fuck Penn State" in my rant against expanding east.

To get to 14 give me Notre Dame and Mizzou.

To get to 16, give me Notre Dame, Mizzou, Pitt, and Texas (if they can play nicely).

If Texas can't play nicely, then maybe... maybe I would consider an east coast school to get to 16.

I think that Maryland, Missouri, Rutgers, and perhaps Virginia would be the best fits (large state schools, AAU) if expansion moves forward. I don't see ND being a good fit, and they would demand special concessions that would give them an advantage ($$, exposure) over other conference members. If ND joins a conference, they will align with Texas in the B12, where this is tolerated. Best case scenario, IMO, would be courting Maryland and Virginia at the same time. Then Rutgers and Missouri. This would probably force UM into the western part of the conference, but the conference's added strength/ depth, national reach, and finances would make it worthwhile from a monetary standpoint.

In summary, I'll take the best fits: Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia, and Missouri. 3 schools along the eastern seaboard and Missouri to wrap up St. Louis.

Texas is not going to happen. They are starting their own Network in the Big 12/10. They will be the controlling partner over the other schools. All will share revenue but Texas will get the most. That is why they stayed in the conference.

I'd be careful drinking the Chip Brown orange-aid. ND to the Big 12 is very unlikely IMO.

They stayed to buy time to see how things will shake out over the next few years before deciding where they should ultimately end up.

If they were sure of a continued Big East BCS bid they would be on that like white on rice. They need a conference like that to dominate. The Big-10 will not let them see the BCS for decades, and the nine conference game deal would make it hard to schedule the auto wi.....the service academies

I could see ND in a revamped (read stable) Big East. I could also see them in a mega-ACC.

Playing Big 12 schools in Ames, Manhatten, Lubbock, Lawrence & Stillwater isn't going to give them the national exposure they crave.

I'm sure Colorado & Nebraska's shysters will have fun with this in the court battle over penalties for leaving the conference.

It's gonna be interesting watching him scramble to give everyone their (very favorable compared to SEC and B10) $22 million after Texas wets their beak first. Watch for aggy to go ballistic.

Note to admins: We really need the little animated smiley where he's sitting in a chair eating popcorn.

It already seemed to me that Dan Beebe was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. This email cements that.

What a boob. And I don't mean these.

Texas' football rep was made in the old SWC -- no Oklahoma and Arkansas was in and out -- essentially a conference within one state, and while there can be no doubt that the school produced outstanding teams capable of playing and winning in any other conference. There was also no doubt that they were champions of something little more than the MAC, ie they didn't have to accomplish much to get into a great bowl game -- a bowl game that was usually played in Texas -- 22 Cotton Bowls, 6 Blue Bonnet Bowls, 4 Sun Bowls, 1 Alamo Bowl.

Their "equivalent" to The Game, the Turkey Day game with A&M, is lopsided in results -- 76 - 35 - 5, and unlikely to become a more even contest anytime soon.

Their other rivalry with Oklahoma stands at 59 -- 40 -- 5.

I don't know what Oklahoma and Nebraska thought they were doing when they brought Texas into their conference, but the end result is testimony to the power the program has developed over a long time.

Why, if they can build a conference around themselves and control the revenue flow to all the other schools, should they join the Big 10? If they could bring ND into the fold they would open themselves to the East Coast market as well as the Midwest -- steal Arizona and/or ASU and they could
be open to the West Coast market too and still have relatively short travel requirements.

The fact remains that the enticement simply isn't there to join the Big 10. Likewise it is also easy to see why ND is taking her time. She can join a conference to her liking -- one she could dominate in football -- the Big East, one that has a ready made TV package, The Big 10, and one with a promising future given population/economic trends albeit with distant travel requirements.
