Apparently the big ten did approach her and got shot down respectfully (though you won't read that anywhere official). Now the question becomes whether it's worth it to cash in big with other schools that are great for tv revenue and academics but just alright in sports, or hold off until ND & Texas get over themselves.

or...

With keeping with the metaphor the hot chick (ie Texas) says she will only hook up with you if you do X. X could be many different things:

1. She likes you but she has other suitors, but will pick you only if you first get the other hot chick, since she is bi, and really wants to hook up with the other hot chick (Notre Dame) who is a bitch and more frigid than the Artic Circle.

2. She likes playing hard to get plus her Dad (Texas legislature) doesn't like you very much, so you have to do something to prove you are the right guy for his daughter (ie needs politcal cover and can't be the first team to leave the Big XII)

3. She is really kinky and wants another guy or two to come along for a group thing (Texas A&M & Texas Tech)

I disagree (and I'm guessing you do too). While I'm all in favor of gratuitous shots at ND, in reality (the "reality" defined by this out-of-control metaphor), Notre Dame is the uptight, snooty, but pretty-damn hot Catholic school girl who, if she could just be persuaded to loosen up a little bit, would form the ultimate, dream menage with us and the bodacious chaps-wearing girl from Texas.

I need a cigarette.

Uhhhh.... not really

Not to me anyway

ND is the over-the-hill, best-days-are-way-behind-her, not-as-hot-as-she-thinks-she-is cougar - who still wears her short, plaid Catholic girl's school skirt and thinks everyone is looking at her when they are all looking at the Texas chick in the burnt orange thong.

Fair enough. It seems hard to me to see how ND could be considered a terribly unattractive candidate, but I can easily see your view that she's not so damn attractive as she thinks she is.

Here is an interesting ranking of schools combining football and men's basketball during the BCS era.

Rivals.com College Football - Best of both: BCS era combined standings

Big Ten Teams
2. Ohio State
6. Michigan State
8. Wisconsin
20. Purdue

Teams mentioned as expansion candidates
2. Texas
11. Maryland
18. Georgia Tech
19. Pittsburgh
22. Missouri
25. Notre Dame
27. Texas a&M

If the Big Ten added Maryland, Missouri, Notre Dame, Texas, and Texas A&M it would look like this

Big Ten (16)
2. Ohio State
2. Texas
6. Michigan State
8. Wisconsin
11. Maryland
20. Purdue
22. Missouri
25. Notre Dame
27. Texas A&M

That would create a conference that is very strong in both major revenue sports and cover a lot of large media markets.

Sadly, and dependent upon the rumors that they're trying to start their own tv network, it may not happen. A Texas channel isn't going anywhere outside of TX and (possibly) the surrounding states, so in terms of overall revenue it wouldn't come close to approaching BTN numbers. Texas, however, wouldn't have to split the money, so on an individual level, it could conceivably be more lucrative for them than the BTN.

Also, for a such a respected university, I get the feeling that the faculty down there doesn't have the level of power that a Big Ten faculty does, which would lessen the lure of the CIC in the overall decision making. Can anyone who maybe went there for grad school comment on this?
