I really think that at the end of this, they will not add anyone unless it is Notre Dame.
I really think there is no chance that Notre Dame will become part of the Big Ten, even if they want to. I think it's going to be one of the following: Texas, Missouri, Rutgers or Syracuse. In roughly that order of likelihood.

JoePa was on SportsCenter last night (I have no idea if it was a re-run of not) talking about how he thought the Big Ten really needed to expand with another east coast team.

Jesus. He's like the senile old uncle that the Big Ten invites to Thanksgiving Dinner, and he think's it's his right to carve the fucking turkey. Sit down and shut up, old man and just be thankful that we're letting you sit at the adult table.

I'd put the odds of Texas joining the Big Ten at about 10,000:1

10K:1? Really? Here's the pros and cons as I see them from Texas' perspective

Pros
  • Texas wants out of the Big 12!
  • Texas really doesn't give a shit about A&M unless they're forced to by TX legislature
  • Way more money in the Big Ten than staying in Big 12 or the Pac 10
  • Distances are better than they would be in Pac 10
  • Better academic affiliation (Pac 10 offers this also but without any formal structure and organization that the CIC offers:i.e. it's nice publicity in the Pac 10 but no real tangible academic cooperation)
  • Big Ten has said they want to hit a home run with this (Penn State being the model). Mizzou or Rutgers are not home runs. Notre Dame and Texas are.

Cons
  • Distances longer than current arrangement (but still better than Pac 10)
  • Pac 10 offers slightly better home for Olympic sports
  • Top 5 baseball program might suffer
  • Texas legislature might get involved, but the players who meddled last time are gone, and the Texas boards clearly think this won't be an issue this time around.
  • Big Ten might not pursue Texas out of deference to Pac 10 having first shot

I don't think that all adds up to 10,000:1. I'm not saying it's even money, but I'd be more surprised if the domers came in than Texas.

ORD or anyone else, would someone please enlighten me as to why the Big 10 would want to give deference to the Pac 10?

WTF do we care about the Pac 10's wishes? If UT is our number one choice why shouldn't the Big 10 go for it first?

I will admit it. I don't like passive recruiting. If the Big 10 wants Texas go for it.

If Notre Dame wanted to join the Big 10, the Big 10 would let them in. There is no question about that. If Notre Dame issued a statement today, that they intended to seek membership in the Big 10, they would be a full member by next tuesday. Furthermore, I see all the reasons why Texas might have incentives to join the Big 10, and it just isn't happening. No Way, No How, NFW. The Big 10 will not take a team from the Big 12, not even Missouri, who would bolt if they had the chance. The Big 10 is not the ACC, and it has more class than to raid the Big 12. Syracuse and Rutgers aree more likely than a Big 12 school, but Notre Dame is a nationally followed program that would corner more of the NY/NJ/Conn TV market than any of the local teams. Trust me, it will be ND or nobody.

Don't you know about the silent partnership?

I'm pretty sure the Pac 10 still wants Colorado and Texas, but I could easily see them taking a couple of MWC teams, or maybe even Idaho, a former member.

I think the Big Ten and the Pac 10 have a very long history of cooperating on matters that affect both conferences and the Rose Bowl tie-in. Do you think it was a mere coincidence that both conferences publicly announced plans to expand within days of each other?

Due to geography, the Pac 10 doesn't have nearly the options we do. Boise is basically Wright State with a good football team. Nevada/UNLV...meh. BYU would never be allowed in by the better academic schools. Utah and Colorado State are, at best, "we got nobody else to turn to" options. The thought has always been that if the Pac 10 seriously went after two more schools, Colorado and Texas are high on their radar.

If so, I can see them coming to us and saying, "Please, please, please let us have the first crack at wooing Texas. You guys have better options." In such a situation, I'd say there's an even chance that we would back off and let them have the first shot.

Fuck the Big 12. Are they even a decade old. If Texas or Mizzou want out and we want them, we take them. We do what's best for the Big Ten. The only conference that we have any history of a partnership and mutual respect with is the Pac 10. All the rest can suck my bucknuts.

What's with this "we" shit?

I know you aren't Gordon Gee....I kinda doubt he or any of the other school Presidents will be as blindly aggressive as you're being here Ord.

I hear what you are saying, but I think it is more likely that the Big 10 would only entertain making a run at a Big 12 team as a means to get more bargaining power over Notre Dame.

The apparent obsession with Notre Dame is both nauseating and quite annoying. After living in NE Indiana for the past seven years, I want nothing to do with those stuck up elitist "independent" pricks in South Bend. Their time has come and gone. Yeah, they'd be killer for the BTN, but does anyone really think the Domers (other than the faculty) will go for it? They may be rolling in cash, but that doesn't mean they care more about that than being special and clinging to independence.
