In the past, that's been a major consideration. From what I understand, this time it is purely about strengthening the conference in football. No matter what they say or what people will think, they want to add Notre Dame. Anything other than that would suprise me.

There's always been an AAU exemption for Notre Dame, and I'm sure there still is one...provided that the Presidents and faculties get concrete assurances that the domer administration is committed to directing the necessary resources to get things up to speed on that front.

Yes, football is driving expansion, but it still has to happen in the context of other considerations of which CIC compatability is a major such consideration. I've stated it before, the athletic departments will have input on the decision, the faculties will have veto over the decision and the Presidents will have the actual vote. The presidents' vote, I should add, requires a super-majority of 8 schools, which means that it only takes four presidents (and their faculties) to scuttle a candidate for academic/cic reasons.

If any non-AAU member other than Notre Dame is offered, I will streak down Michigan Avenue with "Miami of Ohio Uber Alles" painted on my chest.

Were we to go to 14 teams and end up covering 10 states (hypothetically adding say: Pitt, Syracuse and Mizzou/Texas), we still would be The Big Ten, just in a different context.

Plus, we weaken the Big 12 considerably from a television set perspective and nuke the Big East out of existence as a football conference. Good luck with Memphis and Central Florida.

hey, buckeyes. best wishes for your bowl season.

i've really enjoyed this conversation here about the possible changes to your conference makeup. this subject is very interesting to longhorn fans right now, of course, and many see the big ten as the natural place for us to go.

there are a couple of very good conversations on maybe the best longhorn fan site on that very subject that i thought you might find interesting and useful. the first link is to a recent conversation, and the second is to one several weeks ago. both have some good stuff.

your input is very welcome there, and you don't need to register to comment. just need a username and email address which won't be published. in fact, i've never known them to use an address at all.

since it is open access, don't be surprised if elvis or jimmy hoffa pops in, and read with the realization that trolls occasionally post, though that is far from the usual fare. the site is not at all acrimonious and anyone who loves the game and leaves foolishness at home is very welcome. we'd really like to hear what you have to say.

Welcome to BP, glenn. We've had a long history of good Texas posters and I hope you will stick around. I think some posters here might like to see how Texas fans are thinking about a possible Big Ten invitation.

A lot of us like Texas and hope to hear you silence the SEC-SEC-SEC in the NC game.

thank you, steve. you guys have a great place here, and i will keep tabs with you.

i think you guys will like that site i linked in general. it's a good place to touch base with longhorns who don't let their allegiances cloud their judgment.

another good one is burntorangenation.com. good folks there, too.

good luck spanking those ducks. let's between us set the southeast and pac10 straight as to who is really who.

you are thinking along the lines of the way i am, soldier. very real chance i am going to bet. i personally think the way the pac-10 coddles usc takes them out of the picture for us. why would we want to go to a place like that?

oh, and . . . airborne, all the way.

ps:not that it matters because I am convinced you are being intentionally obtuse since people have tried to explain the academics and financial side of it to you numerous times and you just keep repeating the same line about it.

Good lord I understand the academic side of things but that is not the ONLY thing they are going to take into consideration. Texas is on the other side of the country. Whatever, I hope I'm wrong on this because I would certainly love to see Texas join the Big Ten.

You're not serious are you???

The most direct route by car to Austin from Columbus is: 1,235 mi

The most direct route by car to Seattle to Tucson is: 1,622 mi

And that's no where CLOSE to the record either. Distance isn't the factor it's being made out to be by you and others.

EDIT: 1,550 mi - that's the distance from State Penn to Austin.
