I can't believe this is a serious option. We would definitely be odd man in the ND-NBC-B1G triangle. We're going to trust the domers to not fuck us behind our backs? Plus, it props up ND independence, ahd why the fuck would we want to do that.

NBC has a lot of reasons for not wanting ND in the B1G. If ND stays independent, in a few years if NBC wants out, they still have ND.

If ND joins the B1G, NBC has nothing if they opt out of coverage.

So, from reports today, what Warren is angling for is a series of marquee games spread across FOX (11am), CBS (3:30) and NBC (Primetime). ESPN would have been cut out of this and were being asked to pay $380M for second and third tier games--maybe you shouldn't have shit on the B1G every chance you had for the last decade and a half!

Back to the NBC part, this is appealing. At first it sounded like we were going to be the "shoulder games" for ND's 3:30 game and just pawns to pump up their value. Now, what happens when the domers want a primetime game however? The contact had better be ironclad to lock that primetime slot in for solely B1G games.

Presumably, FOX or CBS would air the primetime B1G game. Also, I think NBC also broadcasts sports on the USA Network - at least they do with the Premier League games now that they cot rid of their NBC Sports network, so am assuming some games might wind up there.

Deal seems to be strict on time and network. 12 fox, 3:30 cbs, nbc prime time. For top 3 games. NBC would have to buy a few bottom tier games away from BTN or fs1 if they want something on USA. You don’t put a game you paid 25M+ for on USA. They can buy a couple of tier 3 games for under a mil each if they want to use USA.

Big Ten’s next TV contract will not be with ESPN, which reportedly declined a deal worth $380 million a year

Starting in 2024, ESPN will be the exclusive network home of the SEC.

Fox, which owns 61% of the Big Ten Network, will remain the conference’s primary rights holder, with CBS and NBC set to join as partners, one of the people told The AP.

CBS’ long-term deal with the Southeastern Conference is set to expire after the 2023 season. That deal gave CBS the rights to the SEC’s football game of the week, usually slotted in the 3:30 p.m. Eastern time window on fall Saturdays.

ESPN secured that SEC package to go with the rights it already owned from the powerhouse conference for $300 million per year. Starting in 2024, ESPN will be the exclusive network home of the SEC.

It appears CBS will replace SEC football with the Big Ten on Saturday afternoons, though the network is not likely to have the exclusive first choice of games the way it did with the SEC.

Just sayin': You think the anti-Ohio State/B1G rhetoric on ESPN is bad now, just wait........

If ESPN retains the TV rights for the bowl games, I just wonder how much influence ESPN will have on bowl team selection and/or any renewal of bowl/conference tie-ins, etc.

That’s an IF that won’t happen. Warren has already mentioned having multiple networks involved in future bowl/playoff scenarios. There’s no way the B1G and the other networks allow SECSPN to have the rights to most of the bowl games and have the influence on the playoff structure that they currently have.

With....

1) The B1G and SEC becoming the undisputed 2 top football conferences.

2) ESPN claiming to be the "World Wide Leader in Sports".
espn.jpeg

and

3) the B1G annually has more teams in top most viewed games (see above list for 2021) B1G = 12 (and SEC = 10) than any other conference.

Wouldn't you think that ESPN would want to keep televising B1G games?

However, the last time (2004) ESPN told the B1G to "fuck off" for TV deal it didn't turn out too bad for the B1G....8D

ESPN during TV rights negotiations in '04, leading to the creation of the Big Ten Network, according to the CHICAGO TRIBUNE's Teddy Greenstein, who explores the origins of the BTN with the Univ. of Nebraska officially joining the conference Friday. ESPN execs, led by former Exec VP/Programming & Production Mark Shapiro, former Exec VP/College Sports Programming Chuck Gerber, Exec VP/Programming & Acquisitions John Wildhack and former ABC Sports Senior VP/Programming Loren Matthews, met with Big Ten execs at the conference's HQs in Park Ridge, Ill, on April 30, 2004. Delany said of Shapiro, "He lowballed us and said: 'Take it or leave it. If you don't take our offer, you are rolling the dice.' I said: 'Consider them rolled.'" Shapiro said of Delany, "He threw his weight around and said, 'I'm going to get my big (rights-fee) increase and start my own network.' Had ESPN stepped up and paid BCS-type dollars, I think we could have prevented the network. In retrospect, that might have been the right thing to do. Jim is making a nice penny on that." Delany said, "If Mark had presented a fair offer, we would have signed it. And there would not be a Big Ten Network."

Exactly the reason he formed the temporary "alliance" to kill shot the playoff expansion that was cooked up by the SEC and Notre Dame and would have hastily locked in espn as the sole media partner before anyone really knew what was happening. I think the feelings of Warren (and by extension the Presidents/Chancellors) towards espn are clear when they offered them fucking table scraps (no marquee games just a constant selection of Purdue-Maryland and Illinois-Minnesota) for 380 a year. That wasn't a serious offer; that was a poison pill telling espn to go fuck its own face. ESPN fucked around for the last fifteen years, and now it's finding out.

The B1G sat back and ate the shit sandwich that espn fed it for years, but they didn't do it as a gimp. They did it like Michael Corleone sitting back and waiting for the time that he would settle all family business.

How do all these new tv contracts impact the non-playoff bowl games? Will nearly all of those still be televised by E$PiN? Will this get the B1G teams that aren’t in the playoff bounced to lower level bowls?

I think those contracts are between the bowls and the networks and who shows up to the bowl game is whoever shows up. That said, I see where you’re going. As with everything right now, it’s all about viewership. No bowl / network is going to want low eyeball count because it devalues their (commercial) slots.

Playoff committee select those 6 bowls. Bowl committees select their teams for the lower ones and they aren’t going to select Indiana when Wisconsin is on the table just to appease ESPN. Almost all big ten teams are in conference affiliated bowls. Maybe one or two of the worst teams in the conference if that many qualify could potentially be effected, but again that choice would likely be a 9 win G5 team or a 6 win Indiana. Hint they won’t choose a G5 team.

I can't argue with the folks whose business it is to know the numbers - but here's my worst to first TV time frame: Wednesday night - "raise your hand if you're willing to give us low cost content that will really fuck with your team's schedule." - Thursday night - "How many fans you gonna draw on Saturday compared to playing on Thursday? We'll pay the difference and give you some playing money to boot."
12 noon - "The best part about having your team play at noon is that it gives you the rest of the day to watch some other teams." 3:30 - "Plenty of time to get the full tailgate experience and an hour to get a meal before the 7:30 kickoff." 7/8 kickoff - "Can you sober up enough to catch the game? Good excuse to throw a party, just don't let the Notre Dame fan get his hands on the remote."

So, if I'm going to a game, sure glad I didn't go to a MAC school and be asked to show up on Thursday to watch my bobcats take on the hated red hawks. But since I went to TOSU and don't have to worry about Thursday nights very often, my choices look like this: I hate nooners. 3:30 is best and night games are better than nooners, but not by much.

If I'm home, inviting others over, or being invited over, noon really sucks. 3:30 is ok, but then you have this funky dance around do you supply/expect dinner and the night game? Do you wanna stay for the night game? Do you want your friends, who are now pretty well lit, to stay for the night game? My preference is a night game - bring out the brats and beer around 6 and be ready for the game.
