I'm semi-amused by ND's attachment to Stanford. The series isn't that old having only met 34 times. And then there's this gem:

The Stanford Band has been prohibited from performing at football games against the University of Notre Dame until 2000 in the wake of shows at an Oct. 4 intercollegiate match that have been blasted as racist and insulting.

Irish and Catholic groups criticized the maverick band's pre-game and half-time performances, which included a parody of the Irish potato famine and a band member dressed as a Catholic cardinal.

President Gerhard Casper offered Stanford's apologies to Notre Dame. Athletic Director Ted Leland said in a statement issued Oct. 6: "I apologize for the tasteless performance by the Stanford Band at last Saturday's football game with Notre Dame. In their sophomoric attempt at humor, the band crossed the line from funny to obnoxious and offensive."

But band members say that their halftime show, titled, "These Irish, Why Must They Fight?" was misinterpreted, partly because of an unclear fieldshow script. "For this, we apologize," the band said in a long statement posted on its web page. "Its misinterpretation as an assault on the Irish seems obvious in retrospect, but did not occur to any of our censors. We erred in judgment, and we apologize."

The band also said that claims that the scrips referred to the Irish as "stinkin' drunks" were false.

The statement said that the concept behind the show was not to insult Irish people but to ridicule Notre Dame's leprechaun mascot, which the band called racist. "We think it absurd that Notre Dame can claim a whole ethnicity as its mascot, and further characterize this ethnicity as belligerent: the Fighting Irish," the statement read. "Further, to represent the Irish, Notre Dame uses a leprechaun. Most Irish people we know are not, in fact, leprechauns."

So it must all be about the chance to poach some California talent.

Well, they're Notre Dame, so I'm sure the reasons are for the benefit of nobody other than Notre Dame. I'd guess the reasons are a semi-annual game in NoCal with the recruiting (student and athlete) exposure that brings. Plus, I think their arrogance leads them to believe that the game leads people to equate Notre Dame as an academic peer of Stanford.

There it is. Even Texans are saying blame Tejas U

They’re not far off in blaming Texas, but like most people, they don’t go back far enough

While their analysis is better than Herbstreit’s idiotic claim that this started with the Oklahoma/Texas move, they seem to be under the impression that the first domino was the move of Texas A&M to the SEC.

The first big domino to fall… the one that resulted in the toppling of other dominoes anyway, was Nebraska. And according to the numerous Nebraska neighbors that we used to have here, much of that was due to Texas. Some went so far as to say it was entirely due to Texas.

But even back then, one of our members, I don’t remember who, probably one of the BKBs, wrote a post detailing how dominoes started falling long before Nebraska’s move, and it was Texas that knocked them over. But in terms of schools changing conferences, by far the one that was most indicative of a change in the game was Nebraska. We have had larger and larger dominoes fall as time has progressed, but when they write the history of college football, the chapter on conference realignment should start with the B1G taking Nebraska. Sure, there will be a few flashbacks to fill in backstory, but that’s where the chapter should start.

They're still brain damaged from the game we had with them 20 years ago

SDS - "SDS Sources: SEC Wants To End Expansion Race, Stay At 16 Teams"

Whether true or not, it's not surprising. When SEC recently took Texas and Oklahoma, they said that that was going to be the end of their expansion, so this would reaffirm that sentiment. It's just hard to add teams to add value to the pot, especially after bombshells like those two

And I wonder how much push back there is behind closed doors between Florida (Miami, FSU) and South Carolina (Clemson) in further expansion

Yeah, those two schools are selling the SEC. They don’t want to give their in state rivals a recruiting pitch. Or give away their financial advantage especially when it looks like the 10 coach limit will go away and with it the scholarship limit and I wouldn’t be surprised if schools will be able to directly pay players soon.
If the ND chip doesn’t fall, and that seems unlikely, then that will probably be the end of sec and big ten expansion for at least a few years.

I continue to believe that Notre Dame will agree to join the conference before or concurrently with the new TV deal. It doesn't make sense to do the TV deal then change it in a year. Especially if NBC is getting part of the B1G.

The SEC is boxed in as long as the ACC GOR holds. There's no one else in the Big 12 that's a take for them. The only Pac-12 names worth mentioning are Oregon and Washington and I can't see that happening either, so of course they're standing at 16. For now.

Notre Dame is running out of excuses.

They won't make money, they'll make a shitload of money.

They can renew rivalries with Michigan, Purdue (lol), and Michigan State. Solidify rivalries with USC. It feels like BC would be the next target to feed the TV market beast, so that's something to look forward to.

They can maintain coverage in LA, NYC, and the DC area.

And most importantly, they don't have to deal with all the Yeehaws in the ACC.
