Overall, a very good post. As for Rutgers being a cellar dweller in BB...well...they already are a cellar dweller in a conference that I consider to be a harder one to play in, and eventually pull yourself out of the cellar. The women's basketball team is a top 25 program...at least.
I thought they were a bunch of nappy headed hos... :roll1:

This is quite an interesting thread... and after reading it... I'm convinced of what my gut told me at the beginning of this fiasco... that there isn't a good option to expand the big ten available... I honestly would consider adding The University of Our Lady (South Bend, IN)-- but they-- for very good reasons-- don't want to play... and none of these other schools make sense. Especially not just to boost revenue for (what I beleive to be) an ill-conceived sports network...

Delany is out of his mind, if you ask me. And... I don't remember any of the University Presidents asking him if they should add Penn State or not.

Every school is gauranteed what? 7 million of the revenues of this network? I think we should call all of them up, and see who really needs the money, and kick their asses out.

Besides... we'e talked about it ad nauseum... but... what happens when the ratings suck for everything but football and basketball? Delany going to ask the girls in the women's rifle matches to wear bikini's?
Mostly I agree with you AKAK kinda , sorta. Regarding the fiasco and ill concieved ..yessir. And Delaney hatching this goose of an idea.
I think they would take the money and run, but then again how much is 7 mill to schools whose budgets run into the hundreds of millions and possible billions.
One thing this will do is disgruntle many fans who can't get the games as we have been. Or just plain can't afford it.
I am hoping here that all the contracts stay the same and the b10 justs ands extras but I know that is too muc to hope for.
And as one poster pointed out any expansion may not even take place

Texas?

Texas is known to be displeased in the Big 12, both because of a low revenue stream and a dearth of big-market, high-academic-profile schools such as itself. I would bet anything that if Delany and the Big Ten presidents can't court Notre Dame in a third try, UT would be a great fallback position. Six million TV sets in the state of Texas.
And former Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg's recent move to the Big Ten Network only adds to the intrigue. He knows about Texas' TV clout better than anyone.

This is getting funny.

texas won't happen if but for one reason: their rivalry with oklahoma. sure, they could just play oklahoma every year in an ooc game; however, that would void the opportunity of playing another elite team for an ooc game.

pennlive needs better writers and editors. the other school mentioned in that article is florida.

And it wouldn't be the same as playing Okla in conference

I honestly don't think it will...

edit: as a direct result of thid idiocy, anyway.

Ironically... the notes on Texas above is WHY you don't want to take marginal schools into your conference.

Personally, I understand the agruments against expansion: tradition, the effect on rivalries, achieving balance, etc. However, I still hope expansion happens. At least then we could get rid of the concept of "co-champions". Either expand or return the Big 10 to round robin play.

I think the problem with "co-champions" doesn't bother me. It's bothered me once that I know of: 2002. Iowa and Ohio State were each 8-0. Other than that, no problems. 2005, Penn State fans might whine that Ohio State shouldn't be co-champions. But they beat Ohio State. What other bragging rights do they need? And if they want to get rid of the "co" part of "co-champions," they should have beat Michigan.

Just because the rest of the world need to have a championship game, it doesn't mean the Big Ten does, too. The Big Ten is the leader in this millenium. From instant replay to its own network, the Big Ten should remain leaders - not following in other conferences' whacked-out ideas.

It's pretty obivious that Delany's been reading too many of his fawning press clipping because he's absolutely full of himself.

First of all, this is a decision to be made entirely by the presidents--not Delany. This is the Big Ten not the SEC; the tail doesn't wag the dog up here in the civilized portion of the Union.

Second, the Big Ten Network--WTF. Everybody is acting like its impending failure is such a big surprise. Excuse me, wasn't anybody watching the struggles that ESPNU and the NFL Network were having with the cable companies? Delany thought he was going to succeed where the NFL was failing!?

Third, now we're going to tear up a hundred years of tradition, weaken the Ohio State-Michigan game and make the same mistake with a championship game that the other conferences have made all to try and salvage Delany's folly. All so that his ego doesn't have to deal with a cable channel fiasco as a legacy.

And the one strand that ties all three points together is ego--Delany's massive ego.
