Interesting theories on the college hockey forum being thrown around that Johns Hopkins' affiliate membership in lacrosse opens the doors to the same for Toronto and McGill in hockey--they're both world class AAU member universities and would open some television penetration for the BTN in Toronto and Montreal.

Adding Toronto to the B1G? I am going to have to think about that one.

And the strange thing is the lack of support for Illinois in Chicago. One of the top public schools in the US, highly ranked in math and engineering, and all but ignored in the Chicago media. Their football program just never seems to get going for more than 3 or 4 years every third decade.

Red Grange, where have you gone?
I've often wondered about this. Perhaps Champaign/Urbana is just too tough a sell.

There is a pretty deep well of support for U of I in Chicago among alumni, but it is very, very bandwagonish. If they're competitive, it comes out. If they suck, no fucks are given by alums.

The one fundamental difference from Columbus/Ohio is that there is little to no mass t-shirt alumni following for the school. I don't know about downstate, but in Chicago, those with no affiliation to the school don't care about it. They are pro fans with an undercurrent of the old school ND support.

A block up the street from me are three bars: an Illinois bar, a Texas bar and an LSU bar. The Illinois bar will have the fewest fans by far on game days this Fall.

I can't count how many Florida fans became Alabama fans the past 2 years.

Living in Gainesville for 2 of the last 3 years I can tell you that this is surprisingly true. Not all fans, not even most of them, but in the last 3 years I saw the number of Bama fans on the UF campus grow by quite a bit.

Beavis is on a [censored]ing roll. Starts off somewhat sane, but towards the end of the thread, the stupid train has a full head of steam.

Unless it's like Texas or something, I don't know what he's talking about.

Big Ten expansion: It isn't done. That's about all I can say. Hint: The conference will begin negotiating on a new TV deal next year. The current contract expires in 2016. Definitely stay tuned.
I don't know why the Big Ten would look at former Big East schools (like Cincinnati or Connecticut - both aren't in the AAU). The ACC seems pretty locked up, as does the Big 12.

it's Dennis Dodd, unless he's ripping about imbecilic Pedsters, he's a grade A douchebag otherwise....that said, it won't be Texas - think UVa and UNC. the ACC isn't nearly as locked up as you think it is...
