Note: JHU women will not join the B1G, but the conference will still be able to have a womens league as Northwestern fills that void.

...

Johns Hopkins will join the Big Ten as an associate sport-affiliate member in men's lacrosse only as approved by the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C). Hopkins plans to contact the Committee of Institutional Cooperation (CIC), which features all Big Ten members and the University of Chicago, about joining the prestigious academic consortium. Rutgers and Maryland will join the CIC next month.

...

The future Big Ten men's lacrosse conference boasts an impressive number of NCAA Tournament appearances (92), NCAA Tournament victories (120), NCAA semifinal appearances (50) and championships (11) among the six members. This past season alone had Ohio State, Maryland and Penn State in the NCAA Tournament hosting games as the three, six and eight seeds, respectively.

Hopkins, which had made 41 straight NCAA appearances before this season, has nine NCAA titles to its name as the most storied program in lacrosse history. The Blue Jays have won a total of 44 national championships since 1898 when including victories prior to the NCAA lacrosse era, which began in 1972.

...

The Big Ten women's conference will be the most decorated league when it comes on board in 2015. The six schools have combined to win 19 national titles during the NCAA era (1982). Penn State owns five national titles including the 1987 and 1989 NCAA championships. Northwestern has seven NCAA titles, all of which have come since 2005, while Maryland has 10 titles, the last of which came in 2010 when it defeated Northwestern.

...

Will be interesting if the league now pursues Toronto and McGill as affiliate members.

I wonder if the Big Ten will allow Hopkins to renew its deal with ESPNU (or if ESPNU would even be interested). I was thinking the conference would just allow them to keep it until it expires in a few years.

Not broadcasting home JHU games can't be long-term for the conference (and BTN).

By 2016 more households in Maryland will have BTN than ESPNU, so it might be moot. BTN will be carried in basic tiers, ESPNU is usually in premium sports packages.

My guess is when it comes down to renewing the ESPNU contract it will end up being a bid process. Supposedly JHU will not be sharing in any BTN revenue (what the initial reports say). So maybe it comes down to ESPNU is offering $X, does BTN want to give us $X+ so we won't sign the ESPNU deal.

This is the 2nd part. JHU will know when the ESPNU deal comes up for renewal what the impact of the BTN is. Does it have a high percentage of market saturation in their target markets. If BTN is willing to pay them then will it be beneficial to them to have two deals or not. JHU might like being on 2 different networks.

***

Couple of aspects of this deal are still in question. Why not the womens team? Or does JHU want to make sure the mens team will stay in the B1G and then move the women to the B1G in the 3-5 years when the mens team commits 100%

Then, in addition the CIC question. Do they become full members of the CIC? Have to wait til the mens team is 100% commited to the B1G or does the CIC want JHU badly enough that they offer full membership and not worry about the chance JHU leaves in 5 years and no longer be part of the B1G but still be in the CIC?

I LOVE the John Hopkins add!!!

If we can get their Lacrosse home games on BTN, that would be awesome!

The BTN is going to thrive!!! B1G football, B1G basketball, B1G Lacrosse, B1G Volleyball, B1G Hockey, B1G Baseball, B1G women's basketball, B1G softball... Wow!

I REALLY want to see more shows about the incredible research that goes on at these institutions!!! I actually enjoyed the UM solar powered car show they've had on before. The OSU Green Home project. Etc, etc, etc.... We need more and better shows like those. Besides the film crew and editing staff, production would be next to nothing!!!

How about shows that give renditions and plans of future projects (facilities) and paths the universities are pursuing? Think how many college to be students would tune in to see a glimpse of great universities and their dorms to be, state of the art buildings, etc.

Overall efficiency and utilization of this GREAT channel is shockingly poor.

10. 20,180 Johns Hopkins/Princeton and Syracuse/Virginia, M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Md., March 3, 2007

Looks great and all, but I believe that all three of those games were before the football Spring game. Still, I love that we've become a top 20 lacrosse program. I remember Andy Geiger talking about that a dozen years ago......and then putting his money where his mouth was. As far as credit to Gene Smith for Ohio State's burgeoning lacrosse program............

No where else to put this article - I figured this is the best spot.
Cal is 300+ Million in depth due to a stadium expansion.

They thought they'd sell 2300 50 year PSL's to fund the stadium expansion by Summer 2013. Thus far they are stuck on 1800 and just provided refunds for 14 more. PSL's can cost between 40-200k.

Nobody thinks Cal will leave the Pac12, but this is a fair look at the hidden costs of expansion.
