Realignment, expansion not out of the question
Don't slam the door on future college conference expansion and realignment just yet.

The trendy instant reaction Monday to news that members of the Atlantic Coast Conference agreed to a 'grant of rights' clause for its television and media was that it would halt realignment.

By the schools 'granting' media rights to the conference for 14 years, the theory is that it would be too costly for a school to change leagues because it wouldnt have much of value to 'carry' to a new league.

Several old friends in the business of college athletics I talked to Monday said they wouldn't bet their own money on that.

These people - from conference offices and major-college athletic departments - all agreed that any number of lawyers would be delighted to challenge those deals in court.

.../snip/...

As one buddy with a wicked sense of humor said, "Do you really think Texas would sign up for something it couldn't get out of?"

As a sidenote, two sources have told The World-Herald that the Big Ten has done prior 'homework' on Oklahoma, Kansas and Vanderbilt among other schools who might some day be expansion targets. The Big 12 grant-of-rights deal didn't stop a look-see for OU and KU.

UB or not UB? That is the Question
Some 10 years ago Rochester businessman Tom Golisano offered the University at Buffalo football program unspecified millions if the school agreed to changed its name to New York State University. The offer, quite obviously, wasn't accepted. But a similar rebranding has momentum within the UB athletic department and could come to the fore during the upcoming football season.

Sources say that athletic director Danny White is agressively pursuing a rebranding of the department with the emphasis changing from Buffalo to New York. I'm told the iniative, as least as of now, stops short of a full-fledged name change but will accentuate the New York ties to leverage UB's status as the state system's flagship university. The project has been referred to from within the department as the "New York Bulls" initiative.

The final product, if implemented, could make waves within the region. It's difficult to emphasize "New York" without de-emphasizing "Buffalo." At the same time, if such a shift were to take hold it could broaden awareness of the institution. One coach told me of using a recruiting pitch that goes: UB is to New York as, say, Ohio State is to Ohio. Over the long haul, a rebranding could potentially provide UB (or whatever it's called) a broadened yet clarified identity.

Some people in the NE seem to be getting too excited over this. Even if it were a done deal (which is certainly dosen't appear to be) it's impact would be more 'potential B1G member in 2040' instead of something happening now.

While my comment was mostly TIC, I think if you look at the University of Toronot's metrics you'll find that it is very much a peer institution to the members of the B1G. That being said if there were any serious interest on the part of the school we'd see them talking with the MAC first as a stepping stone to getting the athletic department up to speed.

So it's official - New York State University & The University of Toronto will join the B1G in 2050.

Why the fuck are all your fucking profanities fucking showing fucking dollar signs and fucking pound signs? Is it me or have you gone soft?

And let me say that I haven't lost faith in Delaney. I think he's still smoking some fuckers out of their holes, but we have to be patient until we see the numbers that Fox is gonna throw out...and shock the entire college football world. The B1G is gonna have close to 40% of the country's population in or about it's footprint. And that doesn't include the displaced (well to do) alums in the sunnier places around our country.

Relax, Buffalo isn't joining the B1G.

Speaking of everybody's favorite athletic director, he had an interesting comment in the 11W interview...

.../snip/...
11W:
Is there still a discussion to have a Big Ten Lacrosse Conference?
GS: There is a discussion. There's talk about bringing in an affiliate member. The bylaw says you have to have six. Because of the nature of that sport and its growth and Maryland's success, we've discussed identifying an affiliate member and possibly creating a Big Ten Lacrosse Conference.

Looks like the John Hopkins rumors had some real meat.

I did not watch my buddies die facedown in the mud so this "Conference"-- this whore-- could waltz around town with Buffalo.
