With all of this talk of Notre Dame joining the Big Ten conference, is it possible for the Big Ten Network to expand into markets that do not have a Big Ten school, like Boston, if Notre Dame did join?

It is already available to them and they would get the cheap rate too. The local cable company just has to descide to carry it.

"As is, the Big Ten Network rakes in an estimated 88 cents per cable/satellite subscriber in its eight-state footprint (Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin) and six cents a subscriber elsewhere, according to research firm SNL Kagan."
Big Ten expansion talk makes sense - it'll eventually make plenty of dollars, too - AnnArbor.com

Since the BIG 10 requires a unanimous approval of any new school, do you think Iowa would hold out on approving anybody unless they have a deal to include Iowa State?

If Iowa would try to pull that [censored], I'd vote to kick Iowa out and take anyone else, (even Bosie State ).

Big Ten only requires an 8-3 vote (Pac 10 requires unanimous), which will give Iowa the political cover to vote NO and have it mean NOTHING. The Governor is a moron if his staff hasn't informed him of this, so he can posture all he wants with no real influence.

Notre Dame will do more to deliver the BTN on basic cable in NYC than Syracuse and Rutgers combined. Their influence in Boston will be huge, but probably not as big as adding BC.

My understanding is that the Big 10 requires 8 of 11 votes for new members. It's the Pac Ten that needs a unanimous vote.

Yep - Big Ten is 70%.

Thanks, but BB73 already corrected me on that one.

I don't see any political stunts other than Iowa, maybe in Pennsylvania if we make a move for multiple Big East schools. I'm sure Cincy might try and lobby Strickland then. Problem, however, is that Strickland is the most pro-Ohio State Governor in our lifetimes.

Besides, Gordon Gee eats Fredo Presidents for lunch. I honestly think they have a rotating schedule of having to come over and do his lawn work on rotating weekends.

There could be another one in Kansas (besides what is going on in Texas with Baylor). This should be good, the two US Senators from Kansas weigh in the the future of the BIG XII:

U.S. Senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts will discuss the future of the Big 12 during a news conference at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Watch it live on KMBC.com.

Yea, I figured something might come from Kansas. I guess I should have noted that I was talking specifically about Governors/Legislatures putting pressure on B10 schools regarding who to invite--a'la Virginia and UVA.

Ohio State AD supports Big Ten expansionGene Smith tells Centerville audience picture could clear up in 60 to 90 days.

By Doug Harris, Staff Writer
12:08 AM Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Gene Smith, the Ohio State athletic director, has heard a multitude of scenarios about what schools the Big Ten will gobble up in its quest for expansion.

Some make sense. Others don't.

"A guy came out with a thing of Utah and Boise State (coming aboard). And I'm like, 'Where?d that come from?' " Smith said.

Conference expansion is a hot topic these days, and Smith, appearing at the Centerville Noon Optimist Club on Tuesday, June 8, spent a large portion of his 30-minute speech discussing the matter.

While he wouldn't identify potential new league members, he acknowledged the media have been on target when mentioning schools such as Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri and Rutgers as possible candidates.

Cont'd ...

Given the Catholic population of Boston, this is a high probability.

EDIT: Yes this is taking into account BC in the picture as well.

The scenario where Missouri, Nebraska, and Notre Dame join soon and we're able to land Texas and Texas A&M--supposing it happened that way--would put the programs with the longest, richest history of winning in the same conference. At that point I think you'd be talking about the Big Ten Network being able to break it in to the national scene.

Really rooting for Colorado to join the Pac-10 soon, especially if the rumors about Nebraska, ND, and Missouri coming to Big 10 are true. Then the Big 12 as we know it is done. Baylor's stuck and everyone knows it. If Baylor's stuck how much of a stretch is Tech being stuck. Then Texas and A&M can leave those guys behind and come to the Big 10. This is even better if A&M wants to go to the SEC like the governor wants and we get BC instead. Gotta love the television footprint.
