You know, the more this drags on, the more I'm beginning to think the academic side of the house really doesn't matter much in the process.

It's all about greenbacks and television markets. Tradition and education are not in the vocabulary of advertisers/marketers/television executives unless there's a way they can make money off of it.

YEs, but the final decision rests with the college presidents for whom academics DO matter. No way the B10 should take Texas if it means they have to add an academic lightweight like Texas Tech. And I doubt Gee and the others would go for it either.

Which makes me wonder how much traction the Pac 10 rumors have. P10 requires a unanimous decision on expansion, meaning that any one of Stanford, Cal or UCLA can kill Tech, OU or OSU's candidacy.

Why would they kill it?

They already have WSU in the conference, so top tier academic pedigree is not a requirement for Pac 10 membership. Heck Oregon State isn't that great of a school either. Both are far worse than the worst of the B10.

And it's not like WSU has much of an athletic reputation either.

From Stewart Mandel's latest column:
Texas reportedly has little interest in the SEC, mainly for academic reasons

:slappy: I don't think most college football experts realize just how inferior the SEC is compared to other conferences in academics. Heck, there are likely MAC schools better than Alabama, MSU, Ole Miss, UK.

I absolutely agree. The Presidents and their mouthpiece Delaney need to stop being all discreet and 1950s about this [censored]. They are the biggest, baddest [censored]s walking through the valley of the shadow of expansion and need to realize it. Walk into Austin, South Bend and Boston (BC) and throw that giant cock out onto the table and say, "want some, bitch!"

Get all three of them in a room, then tell them:

"Now, our operation is small, but there's a lot of potential for "aggressive" expansion. So, which one of you fine gentlemen would like to join our team? Oh, there's only one spot open right now, so we're gonna have... [breaks pool cue over knee] Tryouts."

I would question the use of an exclamation mark in what appears to be question. I would also hope that Lorena Bobbit was not in the room.

That would be quite naive indeed.

The pac ten can simply cater to Texas' needs better.

Region - they can bring the Texas region with them and maintain those rivalries in conf. The b10 can only provide 1 rival, and Missouri / Nebraska don't really help them feel at home in the conference of northern aggression.

Financial percentages - the pac ten desperately needs Texas to pull off major revenue dollars and or a conference network, so they will be more willing to give Texas a disproportionately large chunk of the revenue like they have now in the b12. The big ten has more money now and more financial upside, but the pac ten is offering projections that could be skewed to fit their buyer.

3) Athletics - the only conference on par with the big ten is the pac ten, and they are superior in the directors cup. They also would offer a much better climate for spring sports like baseball.

4) Texas is the top dog in the b12 and could conceivably remain one out west. They have had 3 reminders that their best NC caliber squads are basically equal to Ohio State (twice with good not great teams), let alone what happens when someone finally fixes Michigan.

The big ten has much better academics, big 2 sports, revenue now and later, prestige and visibility.

The pac ten has more comfort, accommodations and familiarity.

Since everyone else has wildly speculative post I thought I would get in the act.

Big 10 expansion will happen in waves. Each wave will be able to be executed independent of the decisions made by the schools in the other waves.

1st Wave or "Destroy the Big 12 Wave" Add Nebraska, Mizzou and one of Maryland or Rutgers. We kill the Big 12 first by taking 2 teams. This also has the advantage of adding at least 2 more TV markets. The St Louis market and either the NY or DC market. I prefer Maryland because of doubts about Rutgers and its ability to deliver viewers. This sets up the

2nd Wave or "Grab the Crown Jewels Wave" Texas and Texas A&M are asked to join. Texas has said that they won't blow up the Big 12. They won't have to as Nebraska and Missouri already have. Texas will have to chose between the offer to join the Pac 10 and or the Big 10. I think Texas will now have the political leverage to move independently of Texas Tech (but not A&M). We could stop here and everyone would be happy, but I think we move on to

3rd Wave or "Its the TV Markets Stupid Wave" We ask whoever was left out of the 1st wave of Maryland or Rutgers AND Boston College. This allows us to dominate TV sets on Saturdays from Maine to DC to Austin. This leads to the final wave

4th Wave or "The OK Irish Its Now or Never" ND and Syracuse are asked to join. If the Big 10 wants to be really bold they might sub GT for Syracuse. Also the 4th wave could also be combined with the 3rd wave to add 2 of ND, BC, Maryland and Rutgers.

Depending on who says yes the Big Ten becomes a conference with at least 14 and as many as 20 members. I know 20 if a big number, but these 20 would be the cream of the academic and athletic crop. Another advantage is that instead of the Big Ten we would be known as the Big Tens.

Ok boys rip it apart:biggrin:
