For that very reason, I think that distance is a larger hurdle for smaller schools with smaller national footprints - Rutgers, Syracuse, GT, ect. Their alumni and fanbase may be more hesitant to travel to a further away conference.

 ACC fans don't even travel when it's close. Fan travel is a non-factor.

The last I checked Atlanta actually has higher priced flights ...

I have lived in 7 states and enough cities that I've lost track of the number. Flying into and out of Atlanta is cheap - but that still has nothing to do with this thread as GT is a non-starter for reasons that have nothing to do with travel.

Drew Sharp: Texas or Notre Dame a must for a super Big Ten | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

The state of Michigan doesn't produce many things worthwhile, but they got this correct....

It's only "super" if it includes the Texas Longhorns or Notre Dame.
Anything less is a joke.

Only Texas and Notre Dame satisfy that criterion among those courted. As a Big Ten official explained it to me Wednesday, adding more teams strictly for the sake of getting more teams doesn't fully maximize the opportunity staring at the conference right now. If you're going to do this, do it right and don't accept less.

Okay, I've decided to invite Nebraska, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Syracuse to join the B16 Ten (new name provided by leroyjenkins on "name the new conference" thread). We'll get a number of quality football schools making the B16 Ten VERY deep while adding the tradition of Neb and ND. We'll also get Syracuse's histroy, BBall team and some New York market share. The B16 Ten will be the deepest football conference and undeniably the best basketball conference too. The B16 Ten would like to express it's condolences to Nebraska's baseball team, sorry. All newly added university's are current AAU members except for ND, and you can't honestly question there academic status... Thanks for everyone's help in this thread, please look for an upcoming press conference near you.

Dear Jim,
Two quick things:

First, no offense to LJ but the best name out of the aforementioned thread was DBB's "Conference of Northern Aggression" and it wasn't even close.

Secondly, take everything you said about every school you want to add not named Texas or ND and shove them up your ass. Your expansion plan is an epic fail without one of the two.

As a matter of fact I think the term "epic fail" is an epic fail to describe this impending debacle. You'll be approaching Munson status when they add a new phrase to the popular lexicon to describe a move beyond epic fail. Pulling a Delaney will be the phrase used by generations to come to describe a guy having the wife approved 1 time choice between a Jessica Biel/Alba threesome or a Sarah Mclachlan concert and going to the fucking concert.

This move would be that kind of dumb. Govern yourself accordingly.

Are we really talking about Georgia Tech now? By the time this thing ends we'll be in the middle of discussions regarding flight times to England and whether Newcastle is a good Uni to add. . .

We are a sick lot.

At the same time: it is almost worse here on the coast for college football fans. As much as it is interesting speculation for us, it is impending doom for the Big East and gloat for the BC fans that left it. . .

The University of MIssouri has denied a FOIA request, submitted by a local newspaper to see if they could unearth documents related to Big Ten expansion, on the grounds that documents related to contracts under negotiation are exempt.

Sounds like some paperwork related to their possible move exists.

For those who don't know, Dennis Dodd is all over this story since he's a Mizzou grad.

Missouri's Freedom of Information request

Someone's finally done it. Bravo, to the Columbia Missourian for filing a Freedom of Information ACT request with the University of Missouri.

The intent was see if there has been any communication between the school and the Big Ten. But has you can see if you read the school's response, Missouri may have provided key information about the Big Ten negotiations by denying the request.

The school said it was protected from releasing any information that includes "sealed bids and related documents until the bids are opened," or "documents related to a negotiated contract." While Missouri would not confirm or deny whether such documents exist, that is its stance. . The paper's attorney said the school's response was "correct, as long as you have contract negotiations going on."

We may have found the first smoking gun in the Big Ten expansion shoot out.

Cont'd ...

An extended look at Mizzou, both academically and athletically.

Show-Me? Mizzou feels it has done enough to earn Big Ten invite

He certainly speaks highly of his alma mater.

Oh yeah, Missouri is available...

Nick Saban is finally worth something

Nick Saban interview... Nick says Mack Brown told him the Big 12 is worried about losing 2 schools to the Big 10 (assumably Mizzou and Nebraska) and that the Pac-10 is interested in Texas.

While Nick Saban is a cheating punk I actually think he is being on the level. This is perhaps the first bit of news (other than denials and posturing) from a verified source as I don't think Saban would be lying about a conversation with Mack.

This can go one of two ways for Delaney. He can be playing the genius for having Big 10 and Texas talks under wraps, or he can be playing the idiot for not even reaching out to Texas.

Nick Saban speaks before playing golf at Regions CGI Pro-Am - Video | al.com

Then Nick goes on to play golf before trying to figure out once again how to cut kids from the team and get down to 85 scholarship players - allegedly.
