Silly UC board actually thinks that the Big Least could actually steal Penn State away from the Big Ten.

The Big East is the Conference that should be exploring expansion. With the renewal of the BC v Syracuse in football I believe you are seeing that natural geographic rivalries a more important to fan bases than league play that has no rivalry nor make geographic sense.
The BEast should woo back BC and make considerable effort toward attracting Penn State. Joe Paterno is the only one in State College that likes the arrangement in the BigTen. They are treated secondarily to OSU and Mich. and have the greatest travel with no real rival. BC, Syracuse, West Virginia, Pittsburgh are old PSU rivals.

Yes, I'm sure the Penn State faculty would have no problems whatsoever with pulling out of the CIC to affiliate themselves with UC, Louisville, West Virginia and USF. I'm sure the athletic director would be thrilled about giving up his 22 million in Big Ten money for a 16 way split of 33 million.

And it doesn't stop at the end of the seven boroughs. It goes north and south, up to Hartford and Boston, down to Philly, Baltimore and DC. It's at the heart of the NBC contract -- a situation it took the Big 10 more than a decade to duplicate and though ND makes less money they are the only team with a guaranteed home game TV schedule on a NATIONAL - non-cable required network. No other college has that kind of power. Adding Syracuse or Rutgers to seek an in to the NYC/East Coast seems to me to work only if it also delivers ND. If it forces the Irish hand then it's the right thing to do -- personally I seem to recall a certain Michigan coach loudly claiming that the smartest thing the Big 10 could do was to refuse to play Notre Dame. "They need us more than we need them." If the East Coast market money is the goal, then Schembechler was wrong (I started to say dead wrong, but that would be wrong. RIP Bo)

That may have equalled power twenty years ago, but it means jack shit now. I'd say the vast majority of CFB fans have cable.

Ah, but what if they got Notre Dame in the mix and a CCG? Then things could get interesting. Having Penn State on board would give the conference the strength to hold NDs feet to the fire and would give Penn State back most of their historical rivals except Maryland. What's funny is that UC thinks they'll have more seasons like this last one.

... NYC is far more of a college basketball city than a college football city. That being said, New York college sports will always fall far behind pro sports in New York.
If only a third as many New Yorkers are college sports fans proportionately as in Cleveland, there are still a lot more college sports fans in The Big Apple than in The Mistake on the Lake.

My daughter, who lives in Manhattan, says that there is a lot of interest in college sports among the prosperous young people she knows there. Very, very valuable media market that Rutgers in the Big Ten would help capture.

I lived in NYC for 13 years. Nobody gives a shit about Rutgers. I have met hundreds of people who follow Syracuse. When it comes to college football, the most popular programs are Notre Dame, Penn State, Syracuse, Ohio State and Michigan. UConn has made some inroads as well. Rutgers would capture the Jersey market, but Syracuse is the way to go if you want more of NYC. NYC usually gets the Big 10 regional games on ABC, and it is true that college basketball is more popular then college football. But there is no blind allegence to the Big East in NYC, as some have claimed here.

I don't care if Rutgers delivers every single TV set between
Philadelphia & Boston....I don't want to have to put up with
the influx of guidos leaving an oily residue all over everything.

People need to understand that Philthadelphia and New York are more Pro Sports teams...and it's a very high majority. Obviously the Eagles dominate Philly as do the Giants in NY, college is an afterthought. Here's the best example, during the past two years when the Phillies were going to the World Series our sports stations were still talking about how good the Eagles were.....(They Suck) Nobody cares about college football around here...You find a few Notre Dame fans and some more State Penn fans, but it is never a big topic of discussion. I hear more Univ. of Delaware and Temple football talk then anything else.....ewwww.

I bet it would become more of a discussion around there if a big ten team were involved :wink2:

Utah to the PAC 10? Not BYU? It could happen

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) The University of Utah to the PAC 10? BYU to the Big 12?? It could happen.

This is all speculation...but sources are telling ABC 4 Sports that Utah will be invited to join the PAC 10 conference, but not BYU. The Cougars could wind up in the Big 12...or staying put in the MWC.

Several dominoes have to fall first, but here's how it could all play out...

The Big 10 wants to expand to a 12 team league..giving them a conference championship game in football, like the SEC and Big 12. Pittsburgh could be asked to join the Big 10..or possibly Rutgers.

The PAC 10 would then follow suit, and it would need to invite 2 schools, and it could be Utah and Colorado.

BYU would not be invited, primarily because they don't play on Sunday...and the PAC 10 has a lot of Sunday games. Officially, the PAC 10 would say Utah is a better fit, because it's a research institution and has a medical school, like most of the other PAC 10 schools...and BYU does not.

Again, this is all speculation, but the PAC 10 TV deal is about to expire, and a new TV partner would want the league to have a football championship game, which requires the league to have 12 teams.

PAC 10 commissioner Larry Scott said today "We're looking at it very seriously. If we were ever going to look at expansion, this would be the logical time."

Utah and Colorado would be good fits for the PAC 10, giving the league exposure in 2 new, top 35 markets.

Utah would make that jump for several reasons, the 2 biggest being it would get them into a BCS conference, and it would be a huge boost for recruiting.

As for BYU, the Cougars could stay in the MWC, or accept an invitation to the Big 12 to fill Colorado's spot, although the Big 12 also has some Sunday competition.
