Maryland has been mentioned a couple times in this thread. They are a charter member or the ACC - so I don't think it would happen. That'd would be like Minnesota or Illinois leaving the Big Ten.

Let's suppose for a second that didn't matter though. I can see the appeal from the TV standpoint and from a basketball standpoint. I'd put them in a pool with schools like Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers & Missouri as schools that don't bring enough to the table on their own to be the only team added, but perhaps might be a good enough fit if they're part of a group of schools being added.

Big Ten making overtures to … Texas

By Tom Keegan
February 11, 2010

A source with ties to the Big Ten said that while most people’s attention has been trained on the conference stealing Missouri, the Big Ten has engaged in “preliminary exchanges” with a much bigger fish from the Big 12.
“There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas,” the source told the Journal-World on Wednesday. “People will deny that, but it’s accurate.”
Missouri and Pittsburgh have been the most talked-about candidates to fill the 12th spot, which would enable the conference to have the postseason football conference title game it lacks. In December of 2009, the Big Ten issued a statement that the timetable for expansion was in the 12-to-18-month range.
Travel costs, in terms of money and fatigue, make Texas seem on the surface like a stretch, but TV revenue would more than make up for the fatigue factor.
Getting TV sets in the massive state of Texas tuned to the Big Ten Network would qualify as a home run for the Big Ten.
Texas already receives the most TV money in the Big 12 because of its frequent national network appearances, but the source said Texas still thinks it can get a better deal for itself and is considering forming its own state-wide TV network.
Geographic concerns don’t carry the weight they once did because TV revenues have grown so much, and this wouldn’t be the first time Texas has considered such an odd geographic match. Before joining the Big Eight with three other schools from Texas, the Longhorns looked into joining the Pac-10.

It's finally out there: Texas to the Big Ten - CBSSports.com
Respected Lawrence (Kan.) Journald-World columnist Tom Keegan reported Thursday morning that "preliminary exchanges" between Texas and the Big Ten have been made regarding expansion.

This could be nothing more than the Large Eleven doing it's due diligence. Make Texas say no before moving on. Or, it could be serious. I mentioned in December that the only two slam dunks that made sense for the Big Ten were Notre Dame and Texas. ND isn't coming. Texas?

I doubt Texas would leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten. First, it would literally take an act of the state legislature to move. Second, I hear that Texas is going to start its own network. It already makes approximately $10 million a year in Big 12 revenue. It would make at least $16 million per year in the Big Ten but the school has so many revenue streams at the moment that difference might not matter.
I voted for no new teams, but I think Texas would be pretty cool. If nothing else, a reason to go to Austin every other year.
I'd prefer to keep the same format, but that doesn't seem like a feasible option with the b10's announcements. If we have to blow up the system and reduce the impact of The Game, it better be for something truly special and worthwhile.

Report: Big Ten Talking With Texas

Report: Big Ten Talking With Texas | WBNS-10TV, Central Ohio News

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A Kansas newspaper reported on Thursday that the Big Ten Conference has engaged in "preliminary exchanges" about expansion with the University of Texas. The report was published by the Lawrence Journal-World.
In December, the Big Ten announced it would actively explore possibly expanding during the next 12-18 months.
"There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas," a source told the newspaper. "People will deny that, but it's accurate."
Texas, a member of the Big 12, often competes with Ohio State as the university with the largest enrollment in the U.S.
The addition of Texas would give the Big Ten Conference a bigger reach into the south.

Nobody's getting booted, least of all Northwestern which was a charter member of the Big Ten.

I'm really starting to see LJB's 14 team conference as more and more of a possibility with locking down the big prize (Texas) first. Mizzou, Pitt, Syracuse or Rutgers are gimmes and will come running when called.

14 teams really freezes the domers out for eternity. How sweet would it be if they came to us for one of the last two spots, and we told them to go fuck themselves.

I used to want to kick Penn State out.......but if they joined the BE combined with their pussy scheduling, they can schedule themselves into a BCS game every single year, maybe even a NC game. let's keep them close enough to stomp on if they ever feel like pretending they're big time again.

If you look strictly from a ratings perspective; Texas, Missouri and UConn (or Rutgers/Syracuse) make the most sense. That gives B10 14 teams. East and West divisions to reduce travel and expenses for non revenue producing sports.

Deer in the headlights kind of guy that I am, it amazes me that this sort of political in-fighting goes on -- this after a year as a GTA and seven years of adjunct experience where I've learned just how petty the ivy tower set can be. Yes I can see the money aspect, but from a purely athletic stand point I wonder why you would want to take yourself into a situation where you have to go up against OSU, PSU and Michigan (and my friends UM will be back).

I would think that these schools are looking at where they're at now and then put themselves in Penn State's shoes. While the faculty at PSU may be happy with the association I'm sure the AD and Jo Pa thought they'd be playing for the Big 10 crown more than twice a decade when they joined.

Makes me wonder if all of this isn't smoke and mirrors to try and get ND on board and if they don't bite, then why bother?
