There are several different types of greatness in the world of sports. And, in my opinion, if Florida wins the National Championship, Tim Tebow will be the best player of the decade. Why? Because he would have achieved several different levels of greatness.
As a Freshman, he was a role player. He came in during goal line sets and he had his own package of plays. He gave defensive coordinators something to think about, and he was able to generate scores at important times.
As a Sophomore, he became a superstar. He won the Heisman Trophy. He did things offensively that had not been done before. He was a one-man offense.
This year, he's a leader. His touchdown count through 13 games may be done (55 in 2007, 40 in 2008), but that doesn't really matter. 4th quarter comebacks in Conference Championship Games do.
As a True Freshman, he was one of the best role players in the nation, if not the best. As a Sophomore, he became the household name. If he wins the National Championship as a Junior, he can officially be classified as a great leader.
That being said, there are several players who were/are better in each of the individual fields I listed. Role player? Mike Nugent. Superstar? Reggie Bush. Leader? Vince Young. The point I am trying to make is that Tebow has the opportunity to be able to claim that he did it all. And that's special.
