Best College Player This Decade?

Vince was just a man among boys out there. Tebow is amazing but in a different way. If Tebow wins a title as the starting QB, and another Heisman, I don't think you can make a case for Vince.

I'd caution on Tebow's first title...Chris Leak was the starter, and took 90% of the snaps that season.

I used to think in a similar way,but at the same time he was a HUGE part of their rushing game for that year.He forced defensive adjustments by being in the game. We all knew who he was his freshman year.

That much is true, but the same can be said for any dual-threat QB. The whole country knows who Terrelle Pryor is as well and he is a HUGE part of our rushing attack, while taking on full responsibility for the passing game too. Tim didn't HAVE to throw a pass until last year.

Did anybody else here Tom Luginbill say on ESPNU that Archie Griffin isn't half the player Tim Tebow is? Yes, he used the present tense. I really don't care what any commentator says but to put down Archie's accomplishments from a different era is ridiculous.

I never said he played much of a true qb. He was a huge part of the offense, and deserves credit for winning. You are right about TP playing both roles, but he hasn't won a title yet.

It is ridiculous. It seems like everyone lives in the "right now". I don't even like hearing recruits referred to as "the next (famous player)".

I swore to myself if I ever see Tom Luginbitch in person, I'm gonna punch him square in the adam's apple.

I wonder how that Terrelle Pryor kid is doing at Oregon, anyway, haven't heard much about him after signing day.

Tom's a fuckin' loser.

True, he hasn't. But I would venture out to say that the '06 Gators could have won the title without Tim. He led the team in rushing touchdowns (8, next highest was Deshawn Wynn with 6), but they were all within the 10 yard line. He wasn't really a major part of their offense. He was moreso labeled as "throwing fullback" during that season. I'd imagine they could plug any walk-on to ram it in from the 5 or do the "jump pass".

I would consider that going out on a limb JMO though. 8 Td's is a big margin. The defense had to adjust a lot as well. I couldn't tell you how much it made the difference in their passing game(impossible stat wise),but defenses would have to adjust up the gut or he would smash them. If they had more confidence in Wynn running the ball he would have been running the ball, and not Tebow.

There are several different types of greatness in the world of sports. And, in my opinion, if Florida wins the National Championship, Tim Tebow will be the best player of the decade. Why? Because he would have achieved several different levels of greatness.

As a Freshman, he was a role player. He came in during goal line sets and he had his own package of plays. He gave defensive coordinators something to think about, and he was able to generate scores at important times.

As a Sophomore, he became a superstar. He won the Heisman Trophy. He did things offensively that had not been done before. He was a one-man offense.

This year, he's a leader. His touchdown count through 13 games may be done (55 in 2007, 40 in 2008), but that doesn't really matter. 4th quarter comebacks in Conference Championship Games do.

As a True Freshman, he was one of the best role players in the nation, if not the best. As a Sophomore, he became the household name. If he wins the National Championship as a Junior, he can officially be classified as a great leader.

That being said, there are several players who were/are better in each of the individual fields I listed. Role player? Mike Nugent. Superstar? Reggie Bush. Leader? Vince Young. The point I am trying to make is that Tebow has the opportunity to be able to claim that he did it all. And that's special.

PS: I am not Gary Danielson.

True, it is going out on a limb. But the number 8 is deceiving. How many of those were in garbage time? I think he is a great player, but I wouldn't slap him with the player of the decade title. I'm not saying you did that. I would like to see him lead his team to a late game score to win the game, a la Vince Young in the NCG, and against OSU in the 'Shoe.

Honestly though, let's say Tebow plays a knockout game, and carries florida over oklahoma. Besides doing that, having 2 national titles, and for sure one heisman...What else did Vince Young do?

All Vince Young did was single handedly overwhelm two excellent defenses and willed UT to a title.

Tebow is a great player, but does not possess the physical tools that Young did, and therefore could not overwhelm anyone all by himself. Now, if we are talking about Tebow/Harvin, that'd be a different story. Harvin deserves ten times the amount of credit than Tebow for winning the title in '06.

Young is a crap passer. If you want to deduct physical ability for speed, thats fine, but in the same regard Tebow's passing ability is better.Tebow just lead his team to win against one of the toughest defenses in the nation today. Some of the defenses he faced last year in the sec were fierce. His stats prove he is a legit duel threat qb. Was there ever even a chance of VY winning 3 heismans(or anyone else)? Keep in mind Texas had an outstanding defense during the national title run. Last year florida didn't (last in the SEC in pass defense)

The most explosive? Reggie Bush

The most amazing? Vince Young

I would note that RB and VY ciuld score from anywhere on the field by using their speed and agility, whereas Tebow can be caught, But, say what you will against Tebow, when he's on the field good things happen for the Gators and in a very consistent manner.

I think a case can be made for each of them. I would give VY the nod for playing on an NC team and for making that game his own. Tebow may yet do the same.
