BCS predictions/discussion/Knock Em' Off

I think we could jump West Virginia in the BCS (today).

1. We were only .012 behind them last week. This is the smallest difference between any two teams in the top 15.

2. The computers have to be more impresssed with our win over scUM than WVU's win over UC. scUM was ranked slightly higher than UC.

3. In the human polls we were two spots behind WVU. Us or Missouri could easily jump them in one of both of the polls.

Note: When a couple thousandths of a BCS point could mean playing in the BCS Championship game or not; obviously your strength of schedule could make a significant difference. Another reason to not schedule a 1AA team (i.e. Youngstown State).

PLUS: Louisville lost again, and Wash won again. But I am pretty sure that the 1-aa teams don't count.

I could see Arkansas beating LSU (especially if LSU plays as bad as they did this week), McFadden alone gives them a chance

I think Georgia would be a better opponent (so long as Tenn loses). Georgia not only has an effective RB in Moreno, but they also have Stafford at QB who can give you headaches throwing down the field.

I think WV would jump back over the Buckeyes if they beat UConn, which looks like a strong possibility.

Oregon and Okla fell mainly because of the QB injuries. And Pat White seemed to be just hanging by a thread late in Cincinnati. Once he started limping they stopped calling his number. I never root for injuries of course--just saying I think UConn's only chance is for WV to be victimized by injuries.

Which brings me to LSU - AR. Holliday and a couple other key players might be out and Hester has the bruised ribs. And if Alabama can give LSU a good fight, then so can Darren McFadden.

Kansas should win fairly big over Mizz since KU plays defense.

If White goes down WVU is in big trouble. He's almost like Tebow in how much of the offense is him. Just look at their loss, no White in the second half and they could do nothing. He should really be in the heisman discussion with Tebow.

Even bigger is Dorsey might be hurting and that could really open it up for McFadden. Add in playing for the coach's job and maybe a heisman for McFadden, LSU goes to Atlanta regardless so there might be a let up. I expect it will be in doubt til late in the 4th. Of course that probably just means LSU rolls.

One other thing. If Llllloyd retires Monday, there could be a major distraction for LSU. Sure they'll do the "no comment"/"we're preparing for this game" crap but it will be an issue. Both questions in press confrences and questions/doubts in the players minds.

I'm not getting my hopes up(I did in '98, fuck FSU) and Roses are always nice. Plus getting snubbed might motivate a few juniors to come back (no reality checks here pls, let me dream damn it).

Tellshow has us at 5 in his projection. Of all the things that need to happen, Oregon and Okl were the hardest ones to get when I started thinking about this. If WVU had lost, I would think we were golden, but alas Cincy failed us. I don't see us jumping WVU, but I also don't see us getting jumped by Arizona State either. If the Big 12 South wins the championship, we only need one of two things to happen; a LSU loss, or a WVU loss. Got to think the WVU loss becomes less likely with their win over Cincy. UCONN is solid, but it is at WVU, so unless injuries happen, not so likely. Tenn beating Vandy was huge in a bad way in regards to LSU. If they beat Kentucky, I think we are screwed.

WV jumped from 4 to 3 in Sagarin and OSU fell from 5 to 6. If the other computers are similar, any hope of OSU jumping WV based on computer polls is likely gone.
This confounds me.... How does a win over Cincy move one team up and a win over Michigan move another down?

Eh... no matter... these things have a way of working themselves out.

Don't need to jump them in the computers. We'll jump them in the human polls. Mizzou is sandwiched between OSU - WV in the Harris and USA Today. If they lose, OSU gains points, WV gains nothing.

Here's the math:

Harris: .8029 (mizzou) - .7500(osu)= .0529

and

USA Today: .7960(mizzou) - .7633(osu) = .0327

Total of .0856

Divide that .0856 by three and you get .0285

Add .0285 to .7744 to get .8025.

.8025 (osu) >
.7863 (wv)

Even if WV gains on us in the computers for wins over Cincy, Uconn, and Pitt, the gains we earn in the human polls (2/3rds of the BCS) could overcome that.

West Virginia plays UConn and Pitt. The could easily lose either game; UConn is ranked and Pitt is their annual rivalry game (called the Backyard Brawl).

The 100th edition of the Backyard Brawl will take place on December 1, 2007 at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, WV. The rivalry is the 14th oldest college rivalry in the United States. I do think Pitt wil be up for the game and it probably will be close.
