Posted: Fri Dec 28, 2007 5:57 pm Post subject: Fox hires Gators' Meyer to work national title game on TV

Florida coach Urban Meyer will be in New Orleans on
Jan. 7 to work the BCS National Championship Game
between Ohio State and LSU as a broadcaster.

Fox has hired Meyer to work the pregame, halftime
and postgame coverage. He will be joined by Heisman
Trophy winner Eddie George, Chris Rose and Jimmy Johnson.

Meyer led the Gators to their second national title with a 41-14
win against Ohio State last season in Glendale, Ariz.
George rushed for 3,768 yards in his career, second in
Buckeyes' school history.

Obviously a conspiracy against LSU.

Just saw a piece on espin regarding Glenn Dorsey and the LSU defense. They had this little snippet to share as well...

LSU Defensive Players Taken In First Round Since 1980
LaRon Landry - 2007
Marcus Spears - 2005
Anthony McFarland - 1999
Eric Hill - 1989

I'm not sure what to make of this. Is this supposed to be impressive? I'm not being a smart ass here I'm truly trying to figure out what they were trying to do with this.

Lets look at Ohio State off the top of my head since 2002:
AJ Hawk
Bobby Carpenter
Donte Whitner
Will Smith

EDIT Had Mike Doss and he went 2nd round.

BATON ROUGE - It lost a preseason All-American thought to be the best offensive lineman on the team. It starts two former defensive linemen who were not going to play a lot there. It starts only one senior and two sophomores. It ended as perhaps the most solid area of the LSU football team. The Tigers' offensive line has started the same five guys in 12 of 13 games - sophomore Ciron Black at left tackle, junior Herman Johnson at left guard, junior Brett Helms at center, sophomore Lyle Hitt at right guard and senior Carnell Stewart at right tackle. That quintet will start the BCS national championship game on Jan. 7 against Ohio State in New Orleans.
Everything starts with the line, and the results are in.

I'm not sure why the LSU defensive line gets so much love. Here is where they rank in some key categories, in comparison to OSU.

Sacks: 32 sacks in 13 games (ranked 32nd in country), compared to OSU's 42 sacks in 12 games (3rd in country).

Tackles for loss: 78 TFL in 13 games (70th in country), compared to OSU's 100 in 12 games (6th in country).

Rushing defense: 103.1 Yards per game (14th in country), compared to OSU's 77.1 YPG (3rd in country).

I know that one could argue that Dorsey was knicked up, and that is fair. I guess I just find it amusing to read about how great the LSU defensive line has been, when they have been far from dominant. If you go back through history, the stats don't lie when it comes to rating a defensive line over the span of a season.

I've spoken to some who are in the know and have heard whispers that the OSU coaching staff thinks that they can run the ball on LSU......well. This will force LSU to have to blitz, and it will open up the over the top plays. The media is fooling themselves if they think that LSU will get pressure with their front 4 alone.......no team has done that all season on OSU (consistently). And I'll just nip off the whole "LSU has played better competition argument", they haven't played a team like OSU........so it's trite, and a bit washed out.

If any LSU fan wants to argue my point, please back yourself up statistically. That is the only way that I will give the discussion any credibility.

I am willing to bet that Meyer uses this NCG access as part of his recruiting process. It will be interesting to see how he does it. Will he point out how they do it better at Florida? Will he toot his own horn? Will he be condescending? I can't wait!

Why would we want to do that?? You just posted all of the stats.

We know we have no shot at winning this game. All the stats prove that OSU is the better team. Add in the huge coaching disadvantage the Tigers have, and we'll be lucky to keep this game w/in 3 TD's. Hell, I can't believe they're letting us play on the same field.

When healthy, Dorsey is a beast in the middle and makes the entire LSU Defensive Line better, because he has to be double teamed, most of the time. The Ohio State Offensive Line has played some good DT (Penn St., scUM) but no one with the talent of Dorsey. IF we can limit his effectiveness, we will be able to move the ball pretty effectively on LSU's Defense, both running and passing the ball, imho.

I'm sure that will displease LSU fans more so than Buckeye fans.
Though I do think Fox missed the perfect balancing act, to have Charlie Weis or Ron Zook as the counter-analyst to Meyer.
