BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

they deserved it by beating the same OU team that was overrated both years. They earned a spot due to the stupid concept of CCG's (which could allow FSU into a bcs game despite losing 3 straight).

Texas was supposed to play OSU until the meltdown in the CCG.
That doesn't take away the fact that they were able to beat OU, which is something that no one in the Big 12, including Texas, was able to do that year.

However, here's my note i posted on one of their boards. Maybe it'll make sense to them, and they'll quit using that as an arguing point.

Start Thread:

I won't argue the merits of the Ducks deserving a bid over Notre Dame. I believe that we have a BCS ranking system and we should use it. Having said that, however, it does get on my nerves to hear Ducks fans use the 'nielsen rating' arguments to try and prove that more people are interested in watching the Ducks than the Bucks.
...<o ="">
I swear I'm gonna ding the next person that brags about going over to an Oregon site explaining why they don't deserve a BCS game as much as Ohio State.

First Point: It really doesn't matter what their fans think - even if you somehow convinced a couple of them it wouldn't impact the result any.

Second Point: Oregon's beef is with Notre Dame (as is ours). The only reason why they get pissed at OSU is when we go over to their community and try to discredit a very good Ducks season.

Third Point: When you do go over there, you're representing all OSU fans. Personally, I don't appreciate it when you try to belittle their accomplishments as it just makes Buckeye fans like me look arrogant and lame.

If you really must rant and get something off your chest, at the very least do it on our site (or better yet not at all since we've been beating this poor dead horse for weeks now)

Good call Tim...I am sick of it as well. When you visit another site, expect beef. Not every site is like this one, and we still will shell some beef as well. You have to be ready to take it, like HL was prior to the Tejas game. Don't go visiting forums just to act like a moron and start shit with them, unless its a scUM board. You make us look stupid when you do.

Did anyone else hear Herbie talking with Junker (or whatever his name is), the head Fiesta Bowl guy, last night? It was sweet. I'll paraphrase the conversation.

Herbie: Hey, Mr. Junker, glad you could join us. How is Michael, Jr. doing?

Junker: Oh, thanks, Kirk, my son is doing very well. I'm sure you guys do stuff like that all over the country and every weekend, but I can't express enough to you how special it was to my 10 year old son that you let him hang around with you guys on the Gameday set. It was really an exciting time for him, and he just had a great time. I really can't thank you enough, Kirk.

Herbie: Oh, hey now, that was no problem, you have a great kid there. Now, about this Fiesta Bowl stuff, what are the chances of OSU getting in? Can you give me a percentage?

Junker: Well, I'm not a math guy, but I would definitely say the Buckeyes have a fighting chance - as does Oregon, and Auburn, and Notre Dame.

Herbie: Tell me, does it really matter that tOSU has been there two out of three years? Is that really that big of a deal?

Junker: Well, it's not supposed to be, and I really don't think it is. In all honesty, of course having the same team in the same bowl three out of four years isn't the most desirable scenario, but we really can't figure all that in. There is always some concern that the draw won't be as large with a team playing for the third time in four years, but...well, you tell me, Kirk, you would know better than anyone else, you have a great feel for the pulse of Buckeye fans...do you think the fans would travel to see the Bucks in their third Fiesta?

Herbie: Well, Michael, I'll be completely honest here. If tOSU were to play aTm, or Kansas State, then I think that there would probably not be a lot of fans go to that game. I'm just being honest, here now. But if it's Notre Dame - you better bring in some extra seats. Buckeye fans would go anywhere to watch an Ohio State/Notre Dame battle. It doesn't matter whether it's the Rubber Bowl here in Ohio, or Florida, or Shreveport, the Bucks will travel to see that. Add in the fact that this game will be in your beautiful city of Tempe, and you won't have enough room for all the Buckeye fans.

Junker: Really? I did not know that. It's good to know....I'll be sure to pass that along to the committee, and make sure they know as well. Thank you, Kirk.

Herbie: No problem, Mike, it was good to have you on the show.

Now, obviously, this is a paraphrase, and I left a lot of it out, but to hear the tone of Junker's voice when he replied to Herbie's spiel...it was sweet. I was driving in my car and when I heard that I just shouted, "Way to go, Herbie!"

Which causes me to ask, would Buckeye fans sit at home if we went to the Orange Bowl to play a 4 loss Florida State? Would they travel anywhere to see us play Oregon? Kind of a Rose Bowl for second place league teams event?

I think there's more to this team than we sense. It is a special set of seniors, especially on defense, that OSU fans have grown to love. If they get a shot at redemption, as percieved by the OSU fan base, then yes, they'll go. But if the Bucks get shuffled off to some meaningless game, a game that can only harm their record, then I think there will be some resistance.

Would they go to Miami Florida from Ohio in January to watch the Buckeyes beat the living fuck out of FSU??

Are you seriously wondering about this?

Besides there are enough of us down here that would go to make up any shortcomings. FSU fans travel like shit, even to Miami..it would turn into a home game.

Truer words were never spoken. My truck with the Buckeye license plate frame would be in the meager convoy from Tallahassee to Miami.

But it seems certain that I will be watching the Fiesta Bowl from my couch instead.

As for the comments about Herstreit: I was listening to the Big Show over the internet last night, and I heard the same thing. It brought up a thought that I had (but didn't bother posting) when people got bent out of shape by Colin Cowherd's comments.

Let's face it, the only reason to get upset about someone's comments is if you believe that person actually has INFLUENCE. Comparing Cowherd's influence to Herbstreit's is like comparing Notre Dame's defense to Ohio State's. It's no contest.

As for Oregon Nation's argument about Nielsen Ratings: They have no influence AT ALL. The Fiesta Bowl knows the truth about which team has the greater following and the bigger wallet, so it could not matter less what Oregon Fan thinks.

We're in. We'll win.

Next Question.

Wow. I give Buckeye fans a little leeway for their blindness sometimes, but, dang guy, did you even READ the post? I didn't attempt to discredit their season anything of the such. In fact, I said that they deserved the bid over Notre Dame.

My discussion was over their points that an oregon-nd matchup would be more lucrative/attractive than an osu/nd matchup.

Get a clue. Go ahead and ding the next person who tells Oregon they don't 'deserve' a bid. My name won't be in that category, however, as I never once said anything like that.

As far as going to their site goes, I'm glad it was me and not you that went. Atleast I can read and fully comprehend the subject a post encompasses.

Thirdly, as is posted on this board 1002030 times re: Zwick/Smith. If you're sick of hearing about something, don't read the post! But of course, that would require a modicum of level-headedness.

At any rate, its lunch time. Go Bucks.

here's to hoping he wasn't surprised to hear that buckeye fans wouldn't show up for a lesser bowl (I seriously doubt he was swayed too much tho). I'm not sure why Herbie said that. We packed out the lowly alamo bowl. AJ Hawk and his defense, Ted Ginn and Troy Smith are enough to generate a ton of interest.

Josh, I think Herbie was dead-on in his comments. How many Buckeyes would travel to Tempe, AGAIN, to watch tOSU play Colorado (should the impossible happen)? Sure, some will go...many will go, compared to other programs. But that number is insignificant compared to the masses that will go should it be a Buckeye/Domer match-up. I think Herbie's comments were well calculated to do exactly what they did - make damn sure the BCS and Fiesta Bowl know that Buckeye Nation will show up en masse for this game.
