Did anyone else hear Herbie talking with Junker (or whatever his name is), the head Fiesta Bowl guy, last night? It was sweet. I'll paraphrase the conversation.
Herbie: Hey, Mr. Junker, glad you could join us. How is Michael, Jr. doing?
Junker: Oh, thanks, Kirk, my son is doing very well. I'm sure you guys do stuff like that all over the country and every weekend, but I can't express enough to you how special it was to my 10 year old son that you let him hang around with you guys on the Gameday set. It was really an exciting time for him, and he just had a great time. I really can't thank you enough, Kirk.
Herbie: Oh, hey now, that was no problem, you have a great kid there. Now, about this Fiesta Bowl stuff, what are the chances of OSU getting in? Can you give me a percentage?
Junker: Well, I'm not a math guy, but I would definitely say the Buckeyes have a fighting chance - as does Oregon, and Auburn, and Notre Dame.
Herbie: Tell me, does it really matter that tOSU has been there two out of three years? Is that really that big of a deal?
Junker: Well, it's not supposed to be, and I really don't think it is. In all honesty, of course having the same team in the same bowl three out of four years isn't the most desirable scenario, but we really can't figure all that in. There is always some concern that the draw won't be as large with a team playing for the third time in four years, but...well, you tell me, Kirk, you would know better than anyone else, you have a great feel for the pulse of Buckeye fans...do you think the fans would travel to see the Bucks in their third Fiesta?
Herbie: Well, Michael, I'll be completely honest here. If tOSU were to play aTm, or Kansas State, then I think that there would probably not be a lot of fans go to that game. I'm just being honest, here now. But if it's Notre Dame - you better bring in some extra seats. Buckeye fans would go anywhere to watch an Ohio State/Notre Dame battle. It doesn't matter whether it's the Rubber Bowl here in Ohio, or Florida, or Shreveport, the Bucks will travel to see that. Add in the fact that this game will be in your beautiful city of Tempe, and you won't have enough room for all the Buckeye fans.
Junker: Really? I did not know that. It's good to know....I'll be sure to pass that along to the committee, and make sure they know as well. Thank you, Kirk.
Herbie: No problem, Mike, it was good to have you on the show.
Now, obviously, this is a paraphrase, and I left a lot of it out, but to hear the tone of Junker's voice when he replied to Herbie's spiel...it was sweet. I was driving in my car and when I heard that I just shouted, "Way to go, Herbie!"
