Was he born in NY? I know he's from Michigan, so I assumed he was born there. Still....that's pretty far north.
No, I was talking about Will Smith. He was the one who first popped into my mind when I read that comment about SEC DE's being so fast they can even drop into coverage. Being that he was one of the best all-time examples of such a college end that you could possibly come up with. Northern club-foot, and all.

edit: And yeah, Utica is about one degree north of Detroit, so by all rights, Smith should be even slightly more glacial than Gholston. On the flip side, why isn't Tressel recruiting more D-ends from Ecuador? And does southern speed become northern speed when you go south of the equator? Something to think about.

as if Penn State and Wisconsin didn't already settle the whole SEC speed question, here is a quote from one of their own players:

Dallas Baker said:
As far as speed, I would say that's the thing that makes Ohio State Ohio State. I mean, everybody has this big issue about the Big 10 is very fast. But if you watch Ohio State, I mean, they are just as fast as a team in the SEC.

Rivals $

From the Florida site...Florida notebook.

I am posting this because of one comment...the write says that UF is a huge underdog with few analysts giving them a chance to win. In the last few days I have seen the ESPN Scout site, the entire CBS crew, Lou Holtz, the collegefootballnews.com staff and several other media outlets all pick the Gators to win. So just where are all these analysts at? The only person I have heard on TV even hint at who he might be picking for the game was Robert Smith and he is an OSU alum, so of course he is going to go with OSU.

Just had to get that off my chest...

First Weis now Meyer. Are these people who say Jt has a coaching shortcoming just being talking heads or do they really believe it.
I find it hard to believe they hold him in such short regard.

Previews are posted. Be sure to thank the fine folks who have worked so hard all year long putting these together. The concept of BP as a "community project" is really brought to life by these (and many other) fine folks.

The new preview is here! The new preview is here!

I'm glad we're keeping our mouths shut. We know we're fast, and we really don't need to TELL everybody we're fast.

Caldwell was quoted as saying- "We're anxious to see what kind of defense they play to match up with all of us on the field, because there's gonna be a lot of speed and playmaking ability out there," he said. "We personally don't think they can stop us, but I know they feel they do, so we gonna see if they step up to the challenge with all that speed and playmaking."

Then on top of that what Jarvis had to say about their defense regaurding our offense? Teams with this kind of confidence in their team speed only end up having a very rude awakening. When they just believe and think they can walk out onto the field and just run past us in every phase of the game is when teams end up being shocked as hell.

Quite simply put we know they're a fast ball club so we'll expect nothing less, however Florida doesn't even expect us to be close to them. Now tell me who's in for a rude awakening? A team who respects the opponents speed, or a team who believes in a stupid mythe that southern boys are faster, and more athletic.

You watch, by the middle of the first quarter the crowd (mostly buckeyes) will be on their feet going crazy because Florida will have to burn a timeout to regroup their team after we go ahead 14-0. Because its believing in things like that, that put teams behind the 8 ball. Not to mention playing the best team in the nation, and saying such things like they are saying.
