OSU players will still have to crack the books

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State assembled its typical official traveling party for the BCS championship, including players, coaches, band and administrators. But tucked in that group were a handful of individuals that wouldn't ordinarily make the trip.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State junior receiver Anthony Gonzalez is normally a conscientious student, but he's spending about as much time on his studies these days as a deadbeat who's on the verge of flunking out.

The smack debate: Florida or Ohio State?
Not all of the Gators still have their teeth

Wednesday, January 03, 2007John Campanelli
Plain Dealer reporter
Editor's note: Not all rivalries need decades to develop. Sometimes all it takes is a big game, like Monday's national championship. Sure, Ohio State and Florida have never played before, but it's never too soon to talk smack. So we asked Plain Dealer reporter John Campanell an OSU fanatic, to trade jibes with Mike Thomas, a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel. Let the hard feelings begin.
Remember a few years back when the nation chuckled at Ohio State because the school put a picture of a pistachio instead of a buckeye on the cover of its annual football guide?
No ....Neither do we.

Gators as underdogs? Buckeyes say, not by us
Thursday, January 4, 2007
TODD PORTER

PHOENIX The underdog role is suiting Florida just fine. In fact, the Gators are fine walking in the shadow cast by the country's No. 1 team. Just one problem. The Buckeyes believe no one in their locker room has cast Florida as the underdog.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Maybe it?s something about the desert air.
Or maybe it?s that there are only a finite number of ways athletes try to motivate themselves and oldies-but-goodies like not getting any respect are always in style.
Four years ago when Ohio State was the underdog to Miami in the national championship game at the Fiesta Bowl, several of the Buckeyes claimed there were flyers being distributed weeks before the game in Miami inviting people to a victory party.

Stopping Buckeyes rests with receivers
Five-wide package to test Gators
BY DAVID JONES
FLORIDA TODAY

Florida's key to slowing down Ohio State could be how well the Gators handle the Buckeyes' five-receiver set. There is little question that Ohio State is a more electrifying team on offense than Florida. But the old cliche, "If you score you may win, if the other team never scores, you will never lose" might apply in Monday's national title game.

Gators' mission: Defending Troy

By ROBBIE ANDREU
Sun sports writer

Scottsdale, Ariz.

They have faced quarterbacks with NFL arms. They have played against quarterbacks with quick feet and elusive speed. They have competed with quarterbacks who know how to read defenses, lead their teams and win.

But never at the same time, in one one game, from one quarterback.

Perfect end to Smith's college story awaits

January 04. 2007 6:01AM

He wouldn't say exactly where his Heisman Trophy is stashed. Troy Smith was coy about the valuable stiff-arm.

Maybe because it represents so much.
