[FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica] Off the plane and down the stairs came Florida freshman LB Brandon Spikes, sporting an outfit that pumped excitement into an otherwise predictable day.

Spikes wore pink from head to ankle, with only black shoes preventing a wardrobe sweep. His jacket, vest, tie, shirt and pants separated him from even Fiesta Bowl officials and their signature yellow coats.

[FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica][FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica] PHOENIX -- The Gators stepped off their plane Tuesday and were greeted by the Queen, not to mention a Mariachi band, hundreds of Fiesta Bowl volunteers and one blinding sun.

The man of the hour went to a podium. I asked the Fiesta Bowl Queen Stephanie Holland if she knew his identity.

Coaches exchange 'trade secrets'
Assistant coaches often will call on old friends at other schools for advice.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Every December, Florida cornerbacks coach Chuck Heater's phone rings with the same sort of phone calls.

Some fellow coach -- a friend, or a friend of a friend, or a fri- . . . well, you know -- needs a tip on a bowl opponent Heater's squad faced during the season. What is the softest spot along the line? Where's the hole on special teams? Which receiver never catches a pass between the hash marks?

Offensive line comes on Ram tough

Two Riverview High grads team up to block out a plan for UF success
By MIC HUBER

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- John Sprague doesn't need to look for numbers on a jersey to keep an eye on his big boys. There is no need for the Riverview High School football coach to listen for announcers to call the names of Steve Rissler and Drew Miller to know two of his former players are in the football game.

OSU cautious thanks to Hurricanes

COLUMBUS -- Stashing a bottle of Dom Perignon in ice before the showdown with Michigan was vintage Kirk Barton. But you can bet Ohio State's colorful offensive tackle has been told to put a cork in any party plans until after the Bowl Championship Series title game against Florida.
You can bet he's been told about Ohio State's 2002 national championship win against heavy favorite Miami and the danger of premeditated celebrations.

Florida junior cornerback Ryan Smith, left, led the SEC with eight interceptions this season.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Ryan Smith believes in fate. And it's nothing short of chance that Smith is playing for Florida in Monday's national championship game instead of playing for Utah in last month's Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth.

We Believe' campaign has spread like wildfire

Widespread belief Earl Rissler, father of Gators senior center Steve Rissler, started a 'We Believe' campaign that has spread like wildfire.

SARASOTA -- Earl Rissler believes. And he has plenty of company.

Though it took time, plus a couple of improbable events to get everybody on board, now nearly the entire Gator Nation shares Rissler's resolute faith.
