Tressel, playing the diplomat, doesn't toot Big Ten's horn

SCOTTSDALE ? Ohio State coach Jim Tressel caught snippets of New Year's Day bowls involving Big Ten teams, but he's not sure what could be gleaned from them.
Penn State and Wisconsin did the conference proud by beating Southeastern Conference teams Tennessee and Arkansas, respectively, but Tressel didn't think that necessarily proved the Big Ten is the superior league.

Big score: Who's got a ticket to ride?

While many Ohio State fans are scrambling for scarce, high-priced seats, VIPs are sitting pretty.

COLUMBUS ? Sorry, loyal season ticket holders. Too bad, marching band members with big families. Tough luck, students who bleed scarlet and gray.

OSU's bowl trip familiar, not boring

Bucks are in Arizona for 4th time in 5 years, and there's no place they'd rather be.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has always tried to treat each question in formal interviews as if it were deserving of a thoughtful response, but he may have had to suppress a quizzical look when asked Tuesday whether his team and fans could suffer some burnout from having made so many postseason trips here.

PHOENIX, Ariz. ? The American Airlines jumbo jet carrying precious cargo in the college football world rolled to a stop about 50 yards from a crowd of well-wishers and media in front of a brilliantly blue sky.

Injured corner expected to play

Tressel, Florida's Meyer show they have different takes on pregame prep

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - Senior cornerback Antonio Smith had one arm in a sling when the top-ranked Ohio State football team was honored at a recent home basketball game.
A former walk-on who was named first-team All-Big Ten this season, Smith was hurt in a pre-Christmas practice. But OSU coach Jim Tressel thinks the team's most inspirational player will have recovered for the BCS National Championship Game against Florida on Monday in Glendale, Ariz.

Gators get a BCS break with Michigan loss

MARK LONG

Associated Press

PHOENIX - The mariachi band started playing as the Florida Gators walked off the airplane Tuesday, welcoming players and coaches to the Valley of the Sun.
Although the band stuck to traditional mariachi ballads, a more appropriate tune might have been the Southern California fight song.

Buckeyes boot up to get a leg up

Computers and DVDs, not film, help scout opponents
Wednesday, January 03, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Scottsdale, Ariz.- Football players don't watch film. All that talk of Ohio State players like Troy Smith or Brandon Mitchell being film rats? Complete lies.
It's not 1977. Jim Tressel isn't in the back of the room scotch-taping together plays for a film strip. Players watch DVDs or a computer screen. Not film, and hardly ever tape.

Tressel, Meyer differ in style, share success
Tuesday, January 2, 2007
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - For more than 20 minutes, Jim Tressel sat behind a lectern and answered questions two weeks ago. He rarely smiled, never winked, never raised his voice, and hardly laughed ? even at his own jokes. Ohio State?s head coach was composed, almost robot-like in his statements.
Presumably, the 54-year-old coach had a pulse.

I love this quote:
Meyer wears his heart on his sleeve. Tressel carries his in his back pocket.

OSU?s familiarity with Arizona not lost on Tressel

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT TODD PORTER

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. The shiny black Denali came to an abrupt stop Tuesday outside the business center at the Camelback Inn. Jim Tressel, not a hair out of place, climbed out of the passenger seat. ?What time is it?? the Ohio State head coach asked to no one in particular.
Informed it was 9:30 a.m., Tressel, smiling, turned to Ohio State Sports Information Director Steve Snapp and said, ?I told you we?d be early.?

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State is doing everything the same as it did the last time it played for a national championship.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Florida football coach Urban Meyer is known as a bit of a gambler when it comes to play calling. If something isn?t working, he isn?t afraid to try something different.
That ability to adapt helped put him on the path to coaching the Gators in the BCS national championship game against Ohio State on Monday.

When it faces UF, 50 days will have passed since last game.

By BRIAN LANDMAN, Times Staff Writer
