Rule golden for Gators
New NCAA mandate helped Florida get coveted cornerback
Sunday, December 24, 2006
Rob Oller
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? This detective story involves a Los Angeles police lieutenant and his son, who steals footballs.
It is about a resourceful cop who used the system to his son?s advantage and about a football player who benefited from a new NCAA rule that some people, including his own coach, think is detrimental to college football. It is about perfect timing and imperfect relationships. And it is about a spindly 165-pound cornerback with a chip on his shoulder who just wants to keep robbing quarterbacks and receivers of their footballs.

Not everyone was as thrilled as Smith.
Meyer had been a vocal critic of the new rule, and remains uncomfortable with it despite benefiting this season.
"I like it this year. I won?t like it next year," he said, explaining that it?s a negative any time college football is connected with what he calls free agency.

...So it's a BAD rule... except when it benefits ME.

Thanks for the clarification, Urban...

OSU FOOTBALL
First and always?

Sunday, December 24, 2006 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter G
Gene Smith, at heart, is an old football coach.
"Probably the greatest experience I had in football was coaching," said Smith, who followed his career as a defensive end at Notre Dame by serving as an assistant coach with the Irish from 1977-81.
When the Cleveland native, now in his second year as Ohio State's athletic director, spoke to the Buckeyes football team on the first day of preseason practice, he walked in as a guy from an office.

Gotta remember, espin has Rose Bowl and weasels to broadcast; espin is relentlessly advertising RB. Typical of espin, they tout both usc and weasels, at the expense of other bowl games. Little if anything is being said about our Bucks or Florida from espin's detailed reporting.

All because they are downplaying the NC game because it is on Fox. ESPiN keeps touting the RB to be the NC game. Honestly, the NC game this year will probably be the most watched bowl game as everyone wants to see how OSU/UF match up. Why do you think scUM was voted #3?

Noticeable lack of Gators around here for discussion of the big game. Last year we got a handful of Domers, heck in 2004 there was even a pretty good group of fans from Okie State. I swear, Florida fans are quite possibly the most ignorant in the country. Reading their boards, there's hardly any intelligent football discussion, and it seems like half of them don't even know the players on their own team.:roll1:

Our 0-6 or 0-7 record (whatever it is) against SEC teams seems to be all that they are clinging to at this point, as if that stat has all the impact in the world on January 8th, 2007. I can see it now: Troy is in the shotgun, Datish snaps the ball, Smith thinks to himself "Oh shit! We've never beaten an SEC team in a bowl game!" Due to shock and fear from his revelation, Smith is too stunned to move, and the football hits him in the chest and falls to the turf.

OHIO STATE INSIDER

OSU sees Small as a measure for Gators' speedster

Monday, December 25, 2006 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Florida has played 14 true freshmen this season, twice as many as Ohio State has used. While quarterback Tim Tebow, in a time-share with starter Chris Leak, has thrown for 357 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 430 yards and seven scores, receiver Percy Harvin is the young Gator keeping the Buckeyes up at night.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Tressel says Smith is not distracted by all the hoopla

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Over the course of the past month, Troy Smith has been photographed more than Miss America, held more press conferences than the gaggle of would-be presidential candidates, and dined at more banquets than he can recall.

It is a little disappointing. Then again, you go to some of the other Buckeye boards and there are fly-by gators seen.

Major difference from what typically was seen here with the Domer, Texas and Cowboy visitors? Almost all seem more inclined to stir things up and spout dead-ended trite one-liners about speed, schedule and the like.

We would all welcome very good conversations with informed Gator fans, but I fear they are heavily outnumbered on their own boards. I'm not sure if they have a great alternative to Swamp Gas or the like either. So, I suspect that the informed fans are not posting - kind of like only having BN at it's worst as a host for discussion.

Shame really, they could do with an alternative.
