Game Thread BCS Championship Game, tOSU vs. Florida - Jan 8th

Just finished watching Florida vs. Florida St.

Florida's Offense:

Out of both games I've watched Florida play so far (Arkansas, Florida St.) they have a grand total of one sustained drive for a touchdown. All the rest of their touchdowns have come on big plays (Percy Harvin is good) or special teams mistakes by the other team.

I do not think that Florida will be able to consistantly move the ball down the field against us.

Florida's Defense:

I've said this before, but Florida's defense is very good against the run. However, both Arkansas and Florida State had some success throwing across the middle (when their receivers weren't dropping balls or their QB's weren't over throwing the receivers). Additonally, while Florida's D-Line is great against the run, they only occasionally get pressure on the QB.

For some reason Florida State and Arkansas tired to throw it deep more often than not when they passed the ball, and threw quite a few picks because of it. Reggie Nelson is very good at ball hawking from the safety position.

After watching Florida's last two games of the year, I am more confident than ever that Troy Smith and our offense are going to be able to pick apart Florida's defense on slants and passes across the middle up and down the field.

I propose to you that one reason teams get sloppy is a lack of patience. Florida's defense can slow any offense to a slower pace than it is used to.

That is a valid point. The penalties called on Florida seem to ruin the rhythm of the opposing team's drive much more than they negatively affect Florida.

Also, I suspect that part of Florida's strategy is to try to get away with as many penalties as possible. If you clip on the return and the officials don't spot it, it could be an easy 6 points. It kind of reminds me of the NC with Miami where their defensive backs were holding Ohio State receivers on every play and were almost never called for it.

Last point, I think a real big advantage that we have that doesn't seem to get enough credit is the o-line. Other than Woodley, our o-line manhandled the rest of michigan's d-line. And Troy Smith's elusiveness took care of Woodley.

Troy Smith might throw for 300+ yards in this game if he has to, but I really don't see it coming down to that. Auburn had many successful running plays against Florida, with two backs, Kenny Irons and Brad Lester, that present similar strengths as our two backs. 175 yards as a team, with the two backs getting 94 and 67 yards. Both averaged over 5 yards per carry, as well. One-dimensional Arkansas put up 132 yards. LSU abandoned the running game, but put up solid runs when they ran the plays: 3.7 ypc. The Volunteers definitely got shut down rushing, but their leading carry guy was someone named Hardesty. They have no real star in the backfield.

Bucks should clearly be predicted to go for 150+ on the ground against Florida when examining some of the other opponents Florida has faced.

EDIT: I also see Georgia got 3.8 per carry and Alabama had a good game, going for 4.1 per carry. It looks like Florida has a good run defense, but that it doesn't hurt that the SEC teams only run about 26 times a game.

The SEC, though, thinks the Big Ten is a joke, and really, all other conferences are jokes in football. One of the many reasons I hate them Gators.
These SEC fans down here are exactly like you describe. All of the SEC people who berate me for being an OSU fan have NEVER WATCHED OSU PLAY!! They assume that the SEC is so far above all other conferences that they don't need to watch any ohter conference. It is really pathetic.

Most often, I hear about how the SEC has more quality top to bottom than the Big Ten.

My biggest gripe is the lack of team support for anything but the football team. This includes the national champion basketball team. Last year, it was easy for me to request and be granted a free ticket to see UF vs. Kentucky in February. And I have not been to a game yet this year that has been sold out. In fact, most students reserve tickets, walk in the door and swipe their student cards, then walk right back out.

And I got cussed out for requesting one small TV in the corner of a sports bar be on the Cardinals v Astros playoff baseball game during a Florida football game in 2005.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Buckeyes' homework: Study film on Gators
Saturday, December 23, 2006
Shawn Mitchell
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Snide comments aside, nobody majors in football at Ohio State.
Still, players earn credit toward graduation two hours for one quarter per each academic year for being on the Buckeyes' roster.
That means lab work and homework both focusing on film study, mostly of the next opponent.
This quarter, the Florida Gators loom a rigorous final exam. Are eyes glazing over as Ohio State prepares for its BCS national championship game opponent? "No. Film study doesn?t bore them," running backs coach Dick Tressel said. "The players feel like football is their favorite class, and I get to teach it. They?re paying attention. It?s not like I?m trying to teach them lessons, and chemistry is the subject.

I.ve seen alot of talk about Troy Smith in the national media and deservedly so but it seems lke a lot of ppl.(ie . ESPN talking heads) have discounted the quality of our other 21 players. This could be a huge mistake..if Florida concentrates on TS alone. I think our running game defense and special teams could all make a huge difference in this game. The team will try to take the pressure of Troy an will succeed. Troy will be Troy but the other 21 will be big as well. 34 23 Bucks

I was thinking much the same earlier today when they talked about what BCS team had the best WR corps and Ohio State wasn't even mentioned.
I think Flutie actually picked Michigan. Their receiving corps is pretty good, but only legitimately 3-deep. USC can only go 4-deep. Ours is seemingly endless (Ginn, Gonzalez, Robiskie, Hall, Hartline, Small) as Texas and Michigan found out the hard way.
If they shutdown Ginn and Gonzalez, we'll throw to Hall, Robiskie and Hartline. When Jarrett and Smith are shut down, USC loses. The same goes for Manningham and Arrington. Yet their receiving corps are definitely better, it's just that TS is throwing them the ball. :shake:

Yeah, but Michigan has Steve Breaston too. :slappy:

Gotta remember, espin has Rose Bowl and weasels to broadcast; espin is relentlessly advertising RB. Typical of espin, they tout both usc and weasels, at the expense of other bowl games. Little if anything is being said about our Bucks or Florida from espin's detailed reporting.
