Game Thread BCS Championship Game, tOSU vs. Florida - Jan 8th

1998 MSU used to be it but shouldn't we have expected it? Cooper was exposed by then. For Tressel and his staff to pull a Cooper in the National Title game was something I never thought I'd see. Tressel abused my trust. :tongue2:

That team was so full of NFL-calibur talent it was comical. To be up in the second half 24-9 at home against a team with a losing record? No, I thought John Cooper, Cecil Cooper, or Pooper Scooper Cooper could have held on to that lead :dead:

1998 Michgan State is now and forever will be my worst football nightmare. This wasn't even close. We layed an egg against a good team...it happens. We played for a championship...that only happens to 2 teams. This loss sucks, but we'll get over it. 1998 MSU sent us into a downward spiral, really, that took years and a coaching change to get out of...though we won the rest of our games that season. This loss will not send us into such a spiral.

I was in the 8th grade for the MSU loss. I don't hesistate for one second when I say it was more painful than this one. Florida is a great team, MSU was awful and the 98 team was one of the best we've had.

In my eyes MSU '98 is what exposed Cooper... and Tressel didn't pull a Cooper... he finished the season undefeated (Cooper never did) and beat scUM for the 3rd straight time (more wins in 3 years than Coopers 13). If anything, I'd say Tressel pulled a Woody (finish undefeated, lose bowl game).

Yeah, it's amazing that even Cooper could screw up with that talent. Weren't we 1st in the nation in both total offense and defense? Or was it scoring offense and defense? Still, to take a buttkicking from an SEC team in the NC game is rough. Now we have to hear that "08 all-time against SEC teams in bowl games" shit. I want that to be over and last night would've been the perfect time to do it. There's always next year and I can assure you that they will be M-O-T-I-V-A-T-E-D. Go Bucks!

I didn't mean Tressel pulled a Cooper for the season. I thought he did an amazing coaching job. But in the NC game, somebody must have drugged him because that was not a Tressel coached team. We weren't prepared and no adjustments were made. Those were staples of the Cooper era.

I didn't mean to imply you thought he pulled a Cooper for the entire season... I just think the Woody reference was better since there were a few seasons Woody had some great undefeated teams go into the Rose Bowl only to play bad and lose the national title.

Congrats to OSU on a great year and especially for having classy people represent you. Your coach and players handled the adversity like class acts. I am an Auburn fan and would have loved to have even been playing in the game. We were lucky against Florida with the turnovers. Our defense played like world beaters against LSU and the 2nd half of the Florida game but Florida is scary good with their speed. I apologize for drifting.

Anyway I wanted to say my hats off too you guys for your year and your people.

Oh yea, I do want to ask one question; Has Michigan quit whining yet because they don't get a 2nd chance at OSU? Michigan is as weak as pond water. They aren't the 2nd best team. Maybe a top 10 team and that might be a stretch.

Thanks for the comments. It has to be unsettling seeing Florida get a second NC without a perfect season, when Auburn managed to go undefeated in the SEC in 1993 and 2004 and not get a shot at a national championship. There are always outside factors involved in who gets the chance at all the marbles in college football.

Never been more disappointed in the Bucks.

Wow...I assume you saw the 98 MSU game where we had a 24-9 lead in the 2nd half on a .500 team? God almighty that was WAY worse...it took 4 years and a coaching change to get over that, but not before we basically bottomed out the following 2 years.

And as for the 1990 Liberty Bowl...my therapy was just now starting to work... :dead:

I agree with both points:

1998 was soul crushing. We practically had an NFL team of talent and we lost to an "M" team. That team was the best college football team these eyes have ever witnessed. Period. And that loss was inexcusable but not getting a shot at the title that year was criminal . . . but I digress.

agreed. id say that was the worst loss in OSU history frankly. MSU turned out to be pretty good but i think that win fueled them. hats off to florida on the win. im not one of the people that is going to say that they would beat us 9/10 times because i dont believe they would but on this given night that mattered the most they took it to us soundly but its a new year.

MSU turned out to be pretty good? They dropped 2 of their last 3, finished 6-6, and missed a bowl game in 1998. They were good the next year though, if that's what you meant, but there was zero excuse to lose to the 1998 team.

Heh, there's been some disappointing times with tOSU but to me this is not one of them. I mean we played for a NC, TS won a Heisman, and the big-10 was won by tOSU.

If that's the most disappointed you have ever been then I will just assume you have the cooper era blocked from your memory.

This was worse than Iowa '04 because at that time we were a team without an identity. We were searching to find ourselves, and had just lost two games in a row. Sure we played bad...but at the time I think that was just part of a process of the team finding itself which led them to this 19 game winning streak. This was different. This was 80 yards of offense from a team that put 500 up against Michigan. We weren't seraching for an identity in this game...we've had one all year. I didn't even expect us to play this disorganized and clueless on the first game of next year.

To mention Cooper and Tressel in the same setence is rediculous unless you are talking about how different they are from each other.

I'm not upset about the loss...i'm upset about looking so bad.
