Baylor women's basketball player Brittney Griner

Russian teams pay way more than WNBA teams.
For someone that trashed the US in the past, she is seeing what “real” repression looks like.
Perhaps the reason for her eyes bugging out of her head.

I never would have guessed that. I googled it, here's an interesting article:

WNBA players say life in Russia was lucrative but lonely

Players spending off-season with Russian clubs can sometimes earn 2-3 times as much

In the early 2000s, top WNBA players could earn about $125,000 US a year as part of a marketing deal with the league. Today, the salary for elite players is about $500,000. By playing in Russia, those players can earn another $1 million to $1.5 million.

I have no idea why anyone is taking pleasure in her pain here. She’s an American. She’s currently incarcerated in a foreign country that has notable, recent hostile relations with America. Perhaps she is receiving normal Russian due process. I wouldn’t believe it under the circumstances.

People who complain how bad they have it bad in the US, especially someone like Griner who has experience internationally, get no sympathy from me.

Clearly. But you’re making fun of her situation and that’s some serious malice towards an American who seems to have a different opinion on matters of politics. I supposed that shouldn’t be surprising in 2022 America but it’s still very disappointing.

Not making fun of an American.

Simply pointing out their hypocrisy and lack of global awareness.

Both things can be true. Russia is horrible, obviously worse than the US. Doesn’t mean her experience as a gay African American woman at home was all sunshine and roses.

Careful there, we’re supposed to be cheering on her suffering because she’s said things people don’t like. It’s the acceptable form of cancel culture.

Clearly we’re all experts here on being a gay Black woman and in a perfect position to critically evaluate the validity of her experience in the United States, a place where neither group has faced any challenges that white, middle-aged men aren’t also deeply familiar with.

Let's not act like this is normal Russian justice. This is because she's a high profile American.

Let's not pretend there's "Russian Justice" at all while we're at it. Yeah, I mean whatever you want the reason to be, this is a bad situation for her. If she has a defense it will be unlikely that its taken under consideration if its even presented. A conviction is likely regardless of the facts. All of which is to say that there's going to have to be a political solution to this for her not a judicial one. Given the political situation, that seems like a rough road.

Super happy to be wrong about any or all of this.

I couldn't think of any other term for it...."Russian justice" is probably more of an oxymoron than anything else. But the people semi-cheering this because tHiS Is WhAt YoU gEt when you dare besmirch the pristine reputation of the United States are being foolish. This isn't somebody thinking the grass is greener somewhere else only to find out it isn't. This is Russia shitting on a high profile American for shits and giggles. None of that erases whatever problems this country has.

When in doubt, turn to the classic literature of a culture for inspiration:

Oh for sure. I generally think hoping people end up in Gulags for opinions you don't agree with is a little bit too on the nose.
