Griner was getting mugged, absolutely mugged. Before she throws the punch, she nearly gets thrown to the floor.

Oh absolutely...you have to wonder how much was going on leading up to that incident. I'm sure there was probably a lot of pushing and shoving all night. If you look at the video, it looks like the TT girl stared her down after the first throw down. And then...BAM...the Baylor girl punches her.

Both girls were going at it pretty hard, and it just looked like Griner was pissed off because the other chick got the best of her. I must've missed the "stare-down". She did look at Griner for a half second or so, but it was far from a "stare-down".

1 - It was during the game, not after the contest ended

2 - The TTech player threw Griner in a way that could have hurt her arm, and the punch was a reaction to physical contact, rather than a verbal taunt

Both are significant differences to me, I think the punishment is fair.

3 - Griner didn't threaten to go into the stands and start punching TT fans nor required restraint by security and uniformed police, as Blount did.

4 - She hits like a girl.

She broke the girls nose. A 2 game suspension is a joke. What if somebody punched Evan Turner in the face? 2 games is less than 1% of the season. This is no deterent to anyone.

Damn....Baylor plays a 200+ game season? That's impressive! :p

I agree. Two games is insufficient for an intentional act such as that.

Technically, the NCAA rules don't make any distinction between a half-assed 'get that shit outta here' open-hand slap, like Jack McClinton did versus Crater when OSU played down at Miami, or full-out gangland assault like what occured to Witte and Wagar in Minnesota back in '72. That might sound like bullshit, but it's what's in the book (pg. 141), and the rule is clear and the same for both men and womens basketball: Ejection plus a one game suspension for first fighting offense, ejection plus suspension for the remainder of the season for the second fighting offense. It's up to the league/conference/school to determine any additional punishment if that is deemed necessary.

Personally, I don't like meting out punishment in a one-on-one situation based on the severity of the blow after the fact. Initiating a fight is the same regardless whether the shot connects, so I'm not one that agrees with the concept of 'oh, we'll suspend this person one game because they whiffed, but we'll suspend this person five games because they broke somebody's nose.'

Baylor could probably take a stand and hand down a harsher punishment, but a two-game suspension is already more severe than what the NCAA mandates, so I'm fine with it, presuming this is Griner's first offense and considering the in-game altercation which precipitated the swing in the first place.

I don't get #1. Why does that matter?

Agree with BB73. I think there's a difference between reacting 'in the heat of the moment' to physical play during the game versus throwing a cheap shot in the hand-shake line because you're a sore loser.

Well, I'd disagree that Blount's punch wasn't in the heat of the moment. Some douchebag was in his ear and he lost it. I don't see the difference as far as that. The point about her not going into the bleachers and making a bad situation worse, I do agree with.

OB, I really don't think that it's the same thing either or that he should have been in the heat of the moment.

The game finishes, players have time to reflect and cool down. Other players frequently talk nonsense in the handshake lines. Players have to ignore it.

I see the play on Griner is being mugged. If you watch the video prior to the punch, she is pulled out of the paint, tries to get back in position, gets physically pulled out again, gets an elbow, gets pushed a few times, then finally gets pulled and thrown nearly to the ground.

That's a lot more provocation than, "how's your [choose family member here]!"
