Baylor women's basketball player Brittney Griner

Ya gotta admit.. it's ironic she's a major protestor about US police... yet her butt sits in a Russian police jail cell.. damn near begging the US to save her
She didn't want the National Anthem sung at WNBA games ever again... so she goes to play in Russia because, obviously, it's better there..
She travels in countries that have draconian drug laws yet keeps paraphernalia on her... WTF
If she was saying they planted it on her, diff story...

Not a matter of wanting bad to happen to her... but these are her choices... sometimes you reap what you sow... Actions have consequences

Kinda reminds me of that gal from Chicago that joined ISIS ... went to middle east... got nabbed... imprisoned ... then begged the state dept to get her out...
or that guy who tried to come back from Turkey with a bunch of drugs taped on his body... and spent a helluva long time in a rough ass Turkish prison...

bit difficult to have a lot of empathy when they did it to themselves

Unless I’m missing something, I believe it was established that she, and other players, go to Russia to make more money.

soooo.. if that is the sole criteria for their decision... so be it... live with it... as dumb as traveling with drug paraphernalia in a country that has a 10 yr sentence for possession... irresponsibly stupid

PS most everyone could make a shit ton more money in various middle east countries like Kuwait and Qatar.. but you go whistling at some gals fine ass could wind you up in a cell for a lot of years with no key... you stupid

OK... I go on the mode of no empathy for her... but saw a picture of her being taken from the cell to a court area... kid looks petrified... supposedly she knows no Russian thus every word spoken to her at her and about her by authorities is incomprehensible.
I may have to change my mind a smidge... still irresponsibly stupid but she's damn scared...

altho if we have to trade The Merchant of Death for her butt, she better be the one who offers to sing the National Anthem... cuz that's a bad trade...

I don't think "actions have consequences" is remotely applicable to whatever protests Griner has lodged against the USA. I think it's entirely applicable to two dumbass moves she made: moving to Soviet Russia (and it's still that), and taking weed with her. Beyond that I just don't see it.

Brittney Griner Accused of Moving 'Significant Amount' of Cannabis Oil in First Russian Court Appearance
Griner's trial will continue on July 7, and she faces up to 10 years in Russian prison

WNBA star and Olympic gold-medalist Brittney Griner was accused by a Russian prosecutor of moving a "significant amount" of cannabis oil during her first appearance in court on Friday, according to Russian media.

Griner, 31, was walked into the court room — located in Khimki, a Moscow suburb — in handcuffs, wearing a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt. Once inside, she was placed in a cage with a bottle of water and a bag of cookies, according to Russian media reports, The Washington Post said.

The prosecutor reportedly called two witnesses during the trial; the customs agents who searched Griner's bag when she was first arrested on Feb. 17, Griner's lawyer Alexander Boikov told reporters.

Griner was not asked to say if she was innocent or guilty, NPR reported.

Russian state news agency Tass, which had a staff member in the courtroom, reported that the indictment alleges that before traveling to Russia in February, Griner "bought two cartridges for personal use, which contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil."

That's considered a "significant amount".....:roll1:

Detained WNBA star Brittney Griner pleads guilty to drug charges in Russia

Detained WNBA star Brittney Griner pleaded guilty on Thursday to bringing hashish oil into Russia, telling a judge that she had done so "inadvertently" while asking the court for mercy.

The move is not expected to end her trial in Khimki, Russia, anytime soon. Even with a guilty plea in Russian criminal courts, the judge will continue to read the full case file into the record, and it could still go on for weeks or months.

Griner, who was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport on Feb. 17, told the court that she packed vape cartridges accidentally and did not intend to break Russian law.

"I'd like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn't want to break the law," Griner told the judge in English, which was then translated into Russian for the court.

The next court hearing was scheduled for July 14. Griner, who asked the judge for "time to prepare" her testimony, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

Brittney Griner’s Supporters Call on Biden to Strike a Deal to Free Her

Dozens of organizations representing people of color, women and L.G.B.T.Q. voters called on President Biden on Wednesday to strike a deal for the release of Brittney Griner, the W.N.B.A. star who has been detained in Russia since February.

In a letter sent to Mr. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the groups said Ms. Griner “continues to endure inhumane treatment, deprived of contact with her family.”

The letter said the United States “has acknowledged that Brittney is essentially a political pawn in classifying her as wrongfully detained.” And while the signatories cited “deep appreciation” for the administration’s efforts to free Ms. Griner, “we now urge you to make a deal to get Brittney back home to America immediately and safely.”

JMHO, I'm thinking that Cherelle Griner and the White House should stay out of the news on this. Maybe it won't make any difference; however, on the surface, I would think letting Putin know about the public pressure on the Biden to get Griner home only drives up Putin's price for her release, etc.

She is now a political pawn but definitely not wrongfully detained.
Pleading guilty implies our govt is on the verge of a deal...
May not be immediate but we can assume the player swap is being discussed.

You think the Mayfield trade was a bad one...
wait till we see this one...
I expect to hear we traded her for traded for some convicted arms smuggler or something

I think my favorite part of todays announcement is that it’s a trade for her and “one other American” so they can try and somehow claim she isn’t getting special treatment.

Yeah if that goes through eeesshhh. I'd rather keep the merchant of death in jail then release any random wrongfully detained American. Athlete, tourist etc

Bout was arrested after informants working for the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) posed as representatives of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), a group designated as a narco-terrorist organisation.

Prosecutors alleged he had agreed to sell weapons, including surface-to-air missiles and rocket launchers, on the understanding they would be used to attack American helicopters in Colombia.

Yeah, releasing a guy that sells surface-to-air missiles and rocket launchers to groups that want to shoot down American helicopters (and probably planes) is not a good idea.
