Barry Bonds (Juiced Merge)

HabaneroBuck;835732; said:
Bonds did cheat on his wife; he did lie to the IRS; and he admitted to taking steroids ("unknowingly").

I normally put stock into Mike & Mike's comments, and they both said there was no proof of the wife and tax statements. Do you have proof or do you just hate Bonds that much or both?

It's nice that everyone focuses on Bonds -- who, remember, has never tested positive for steroids, despite being probably the most-tested athlete in history -- while ignoring the impact steroids have had on pitchers.

If he never tested positive, that means the steroids he was taking did their job. They didn't call it "Clear" for nothing.

And I'll never condone the "everybody else was doing it, so it's ok" defense. I don't give a shit if every pitcher he faced was on roids (beyond highly unlikely), he's still a fucking roidhead in my book.

The mounting evidence is substantial to back up public opinion on this issue. The unjustified increase in power along with the ridiculous change in body type would be enough to at least be suspicious. But when you add in the fact that his trainer had a calender indicating what he was using and the fact that this same trainer chooses jail over testifying about it, it's more than enough for me. Combined with his connection to Victor Conte, and his unwillingness to be vocal against the use of steroids, then I now and forever say "Fuck him and everything he stands for."

The double standard has little to do with drugs, and everything to do with what a repugnant, disagreeable shite Mr. Bonds is. Well, fine and dandy, and I agree that he is, but since when has this been a valid reason to ignore someone's accomplishments? Selig is a self-righteous idiot. He needs to celebrate Bonds with the same vigor that he will celebrate the next (likely roid-enhanced) 300-game winning pitcher.

As I said before, I'm not convinced he's the prick he's made out to be. His biggest character flaw (outside of being a fucking roidhead) is that he doesn't cater to the media. I've never seen him yell or make a scene or rip into a teammate. And throughout this whole process, he hasn't really blown up when he's the most scrutinized athlete on the planet. (that's probably because he knows they're right when they call him a roidhead)

In fact, the only evidence supporting him not taking steroids is the fact that he hasn't blown up. But I'll bet anything that if you pull his jock strap down, you'd see pea-sized testicles that would convince you that he's a roidhead. So fuck him. I hope he gets beaned in the head.

Column: Support for Bonds split by race

TIM DAHLBERG

AP Sports Columnist

The kid who caught home run No. 714 off the bat of Barry Bonds a year ago scurried out of Oakland's stadium with his valuable souvenir without bothering to see what Bonds might want to offer for it. Before he left, Tyler Snyder had just one thing to say: "I hate that guy," Snyder said.
The kid, of course, is not alone. When Bonds was on the verge of passing Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list, he was booed in Milwaukee, mocked in Philadelphia and jeered in Houston. And hate might be too nice of a word for the reaction he gets every time he sets foot in left field at Dodger Stadium.

So if I do not have proof of something being true, then that means I can only believe a thing is true based on blind rage? If a thing's true, it's true.

It's kind of hard for someone to lie about a NINE-YEAR relationship. If she said she met him one night after game...that's something else. I didn't even think the Kimberly Bell things were controversial. His lawyer admitted that Bonds and this chick were an "item," but only contended that she was a gold-digger.

You can't discuss Bonds without race
By Todd Boyd
Special to Page 2

On April 4, 1974, Opening Day for a new season, baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn and Vice President Gerald Ford were in attendance at the Cincinnati Reds' home opener against the Atlanta Braves to witness Hank Aaron attempt to tie Babe Ruth's celebrated home run record. This record was held by the most beloved figure in the history of the game, and it was also a record that many felt would never be broken.

It was just a matter of time...

I keep hearing the "they've never tested positive for steroids" part, but HGH can not be detected by a simple piss test can it? I thought HGH can only be detected through blood testing, which the league wants to adopt but the players union is firmly against. So do you think these guys in question would even bother taking steroids when they know they are almost guaranteed never to be busted taking human growth hormones?

But whatever, bottom line is that Bonds is still an asshole.

Believe what you want. If you want to convince me on the issue, I'll request evidence.

Well, Barry isn't going to admit to it, and he probably uses HGH now, so you're never going to have the concrete, beyond all possible doubt evidence.

But I can point these factors as all consistent with Barry Bonds using steroids:

1. Dramatic increase in power numbers in the late 90s and beyond.

2. Sizable increase in body type.

3. He indisputably was connected to Victor Conte, who was the biggest West Coast distributor of steroids and performance enhancing drugs - including the Clear, which was undetectable.

4. Investigators found a schedule in the residence of his former trainer, Greg Anderson, which indicated what days that Bonds was using steroids, and in what form, whether "the clear" or cream.

5. Anderson has been jailed - not once, but twice - because he refuses to testify about Bonds and steroids.

And then there are the factors inconsistent with Bonds using steroids:

1. He denies "knowingly" using any banned substance.
2. He's never tested positive.

As to #1, of course he's going to deny it, so I put little, if any, stock in that factor. As to the second, he was using forms of steroids that were designed to be indetectable - if he was using them, they probably did their job. At some point, he very likely switched to using HGH, which is also undetectable. So I put very little stock in the second factor.

Now I realize that there isn't sufficient proof for a case in criminal court. (there probably would be if Anderson would testify). But this is the court of public opinion. And the scales don't balance in Bonds' favor if you look at all of the evidence.

Oh believe me, I think he's as guilty as they come when it comes to steroid use.

This began with me criticizing Schilling for the comments he made, especially the ones about cheating on his wife and his taxes. I thought the comments were inappropriate, and Schilling has a history of opening his fat mouth as well. I feel he needs to worry only about himself and not concern about others.

I got a response calling him guilty on all accounts, so I said do you have proof or are you just passionatly anti-Bonds; it turned out the latter was true, so I rest my case.

Believe me SD, anyone who thinks Bonds unknowingly pumped himself up is a fool in my opinion.

Well, I'm not going to defend Schilling. If someone wants to rip into Barry, by all means. But do it with the facts - don't just make them up.

I thought, for some reason, you were questioning whether Bonds was a juicer. Apologies for the misconception. But if there is anyone out there that questions whether he's a roid-head, the response will just have to be addressed to them.

Bonds' 756th ball may not break record

RACHEL KONRAD

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds may break Hank Aaron's home run record this season, but several sports memorabilia experts doubt the slugger's 756th homer ball will break records at auction houses.
Heritage Auction Galleries said Sunday it would pay $1 million for the baseball Bonds is expected to hit this summer to establish a new career home run record. But executives acknowledged that the company was willing to part with seven figures in part because of all the publicity surrounding the milestone.
"We want press on it, and we want the news out there," Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions for Heritage, said Monday. "But overall, we'd just love to handle this baseball."

Bonds 'too old' to talk about Schilling

CHRIS DUNCAN

Associated Press

HOUSTON - Barry Bonds said he's "too old" to respond to Curt Schilling's critical comments and also refused to talk about his pursuit of Hank Aaron's career home run mark on Tuesday.
A week ago, Schilling criticized Bonds on a radio talk show, saying the slugger has admitted using steroids and cheating on his wife and his taxes. The Boston Red Sox ace apologized to Bonds on his blog the next day, calling it an "irresponsible thing to say."
The 42-year-old Bonds said there is no need to address Schilling's comments.
"I'm too old for childish activities," Bonds said before the Giants opened a three-game series in Houston. "I don't really have any time for that at all. I didn't really hear them at first, I was told about them. I don't really have any comment to that. I've got children and I'm too old for that stuff."

Aaron won't reconsider Bonds decision

MARTIN STEINBERG

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Even if Barry Bonds is poised to break the home run record right there in Atlanta, Hank Aaron is not going. Period. "I will never reconsider my decision," Aaron told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday from his adopted hometown.
Bonds is 10 homers from matching the 755 mark that Aaron set during a 23-year career with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Aaron doesn't plan to see the milestone homer in person, wherever it might happen. And that includes Atlanta, if it takes that long - Bonds and his San Francisco Giants don't play there until mid-August.
