Barry Bonds (Juiced Merge)

I bought a Barry Bonds home run ball from the Reds in '87. Just thought it was kind of a cool thing then. It had a little certificate saying he hit it off Bill Gullickson. I looked it up and it was his 34th career homer. Put it up on Ebay last night. Hopefully, I'll get enough $$ to pay for my vacation. Can't say I'm a fan, but Bonds is a product of his era. I've seen him play a few times of the years and he's made my jaw drop more than once. Sadly, it took the beef roids and guys like McGwire, Sosa, and Bonds to bring interest back to the game on a national level after the strike. It's good that they are finally cleaning things up, but how do erase what has been done? Not too many players or coaches seem that upset and I think guys like Griffey who played clean have more of a right to beef than you or I. A Rod is already bearing down on 500, so this "record" may not stand long. And Bud Selig better be there. He needs to face the questions from the press just as much as Bonds.

I agree, MuckFich, it's Selig's job to be there.

As I've said before, I don't much blame Bonds, or any one player, for the Steroids problems in MLB. Everyone focuses on the guy hitting the long ball... Pitchers are juiced too. You don't gain 5mph on your fastball after you reach 30 years old. It just doesn't happen. Ya know? Bonds once said "I don't see how steroids increase hand eye coordination" and that's a very valid point. Maybe a guy can hit a ball 5 to 10 more feet... but... if he can't see the ball, he's still not gonna be able to hit it at all, let alone far.

Griff has proven, I think, that you can excel at Baseball in the roid era without juicing. A-Rod too, as I dont think he's ever been accused of juicing, nor does he look the part. To me it has less to do with the concept of "doing it right" (Which they are, by not juicing) as it has to do with them realizing "I'm already a top of the game player. I can already hit a 100mph fastball. When I hit such a ball with my regular swing, it goes a long long way. I don't need steroids to improve anything in my game."

Bonds was talented enough to play the game without steroids as well. Sammy Sosa, on the other hand, not only needed roids but also a corked fucking bat. Fuck Sammy Sosa. If I were Selig, I'd buy a used NASA rocket, strap Sosa to it, and fire it off - Destination: Sun.

Poll: Rooting for Bonds divided by race

BEN WALKER

Associated Press

When it comes to rooting for Barry Bonds to become the home run champion, one factor stands out: race. An AP-Ipsos poll released Monday showed 55 percent of minority baseball fans want Bonds to set the record, while only 34 percent of non-Hispanic white baseball fans hope he passes Hank Aaron's record.
The results mark a significant jump among minorities. Last October, just 34 percent in an AP-AOL poll were rooting for Bonds to make history.
Bonds went into Monday night's game against the Chicago Cubs with 751 home runs, four behind Aaron.

Baseball notebook: Sore, tired Bonds reduced to pinch-hitter

Wednesday, July 18, 2007 3:30 AM

Associated Press

Exactly a week before Barry Bonds' 43rd birthday, the effects of his age has started to really show.
Bonds got a second straight day off last night, with San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy holding the slugger out of the starting lineup again to rest his sore shins and hamstrings. Bonds pinch-hit in the eighth inning and lined out to left, stretching his batting funk to 0 for 21.

Bonds hits 752nd and 753rd home runs

JANIE McCAULEY

Associated Press

CHICAGO - Barry Bonds moved within two homers of Hank Aaron's record Thursday, hitting Nos. 752 and 753 with two of his biggest swings this month and ending his worst slump in six years. He was rested and ready, all right.
Bonds sent the first pitch from Cubs starter Ted Lilly high over the right-field fence leading off the second inning - the first drive out of Wrigley Field to reach Sheffield Avenue all season. Then he homered again in the seventh on a 3-2 pitch from Will Ohman, a three-run shot that stuck in the basket of the center-field wall. Ohman became the 443rd pitcher to give up a home run to Bonds, who has 19 homers on the year.

best player of our era, steroids or not.
Bonds admitted to going to a lab, taking steroid pills because other athelete ere taking them and getting BIG and he claims not to know what they were.
Thats a joke. His records should be expunged. And if so then he clearly is not the best player of our era , or at least not mine

you are pretty sure Bonds used steroids. I'm pretty sure Sosa, McGwire, Clemens and many others used performance enhancers. Do we just erase the last 15 years? Because if Bonds' stats don't count then neither do anyone elses. Sorry you can't erase one guys stats because you don't think he is a good guy.

Barry Bonds is a surly, churlish, self-important snot.

He is also the best baseball player I have ever seen, and I saw Mantle and Mays in their heyday. Before Bonds, they were the best I'd seen. I also saw Musial and Ted Williams, but in the twilight of their careers.

One can say what one likes about Bonds's use of steroids, but he is likely in the major league majority (years 1995-2004) in having taken them. Bud Selig is using Bonds as a scapegoat for MLB's failure to take charge of this problem when they should have. Shame on Selig for doing so.

I think all power records after 1987 are suspect.

Good points from someone who has seen a lot of baseball...
