Barry Bonds mum about playing next year

ROB MAADDI

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Barry Bonds isn't sure about his future or thinking about breaking Hank Aaron's home run record. Swarmed by cameras, microphones and a horde of reporters, an affable Bonds sat in the dugout and discussed various topics ranging from his ability to tune out fans to his fondness for Philly cheesesteaks.
Just don't ask him about his march toward Aaron's total of 755 homers. Bonds is stuck on 746 after going 1-for-2 with two walks in San Francisco's game against the Phillies on Friday night.
"I'm not talking about the record. I only talk about us as a team," Bonds said, holding a digital recorder near his mouth throughout the interview so he could post it on his Web site.

MLB considers expanded Bonds TV coverage

RONALD BLUM

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Whether they're rooting for him or against him, fans might get to see a lot of Barry Bonds on television. Fox and ESPN are discussing the possibility of expanding coverage of Bonds as he approaches Hank Aaron's home run mark of 755, anticipating viewers will tune in - out of admiration, curiosity or contempt.
"First we have to decide, when can we break in and begin to do live cut-ins of his at-bats, and that's being negotiated now," said Len DeLuca, ESPN's senior vice president for programming and acquisitions. "Is it within two? Within three? Within five? Where does it become reasonable?"

Bonds to give Hall of Fame an artifact

JANIE McCAULEY

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds agreed Tuesday to provide the Hall of Fame with an artifact when he breaks Hank Aaron's record with his 756th home run, perhaps a batting helmet.
Bonds met with Hall of Fame vice president Jeff Idelson for about 40 minutes to discuss what the San Francisco slugger might donate to Cooperstown, and Bonds initially suggested a batting helmet though nothing had been finalized. This came after earlier comments by Bonds that made it unclear if he would donate anything, with him saying, "I'm not worried about the Hall. I take care of me."
Idelson traveled to San Francisco on Tuesday primarily to meet with Bonds - and the news he received from the seven-time NL MVP made the cross-country trek worthwhile.

Bonds was Hall-of-Famer prior to steroids allegations

Fans may have changed the way they view Barry Bonds over the past decade, but Bonds helped change the way the game was played. Long before "Game of Shadows" outlined claims of his alleged steroid use beginning in the late 1990s - which corresponded with his power explosion and hunt for Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 home runs - Bonds was one of the best all-around players in the game.
The sixth overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1985 after an All-American career at Arizona State, a 6-2, 190-pound Bonds - about 40 pounds lighter than his 2007 playing weight - made his major league debut May 30, 1986 at the age of 21 after just 115 games in the minor leagues.

There was no denying Bonds' tools in his early years, as he could run, hit, hit for power, play defense and throw. He won three National League MVPs from 1990-93, finishing second to Atlanta Braves third baseman Terry Pendleton in 1991. "People forget what a complete player he was with the Pirates," said Detroit Tigers coach Andy Van Slyke, who played with Bonds in Pittsburgh from 1987-92. "He won MVP awards with those talents, not just as a power hitter."

Bonds the center of attention just the way he likes it

By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
July 10, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds loves being the center of attention so much that he joked he might drag his home run chase all the way into next year. "I'm not quitting, so I might make you wait 'til next year," Bonds said to the swarm around him. "You know I'm drama, so why not make it more drama?"

Selig won't commit to Bonds chase

RONALD BLUM

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Bud Selig still hasn't made out his lineup card for Barry Bonds. With Bonds only five home runs from breaking Hank Aaron's career mark, the commissioner was adamant Tuesday that he hadn't decided whether to attend the record-breaker.
"All of this will have to be played by ear," Selig said. "I do have a day job."
Bonds entered the All-Star break with 751 homers. After hitting 11 home runs in his first 76 at-bats, Bonds has just six his last 131.
Many baseball executives have speculated in recent weeks that Selig ultimately will go to some games when Bonds nears the record. The commissioner said there's no plan in place, either way.
"None. Zero. I said I'd do it at the appropriate time, and I'll determine what the appropriate time is," he said during a question-and-answer session with the Baseball Writers' Association of America prior to the All-Star game. "I'm just going to handle it in my own way and hope that that is appropriate."
