Barry Bonds (Juiced Merge)

Column: Cheering for Bonds to do it fast

TIM DAHLBERG

AP Sports Columnist

The sight of people in San Francisco bowing to Barry Bonds as he trotted slowly around the bases for the 740th time in his pro career wasn't any big deal. Giants fans have already made peace with the fact that they'll celebrate their hero even if few others will.
The five home runs in his last seven games, though, gave me pause.
You see, I've been trying not to write about Bonds because, like most of America, I'm sick and tired of rehashing the same old arguments about steroids, records and ballplayers with big heads and juvenile personalities.

Bonds moves within 13 homers of Aaron

Associated Press

PHOENIX - Barry Bonds hit his 742nd home run Saturday night, moving within 13 of Hank Aaron's career record.
With a runner at second and two outs, Bonds hit a 1-1 pitch from Arizona's Edgar Gonzalez 428 feet into the concourse in right-center field to make the score 2-0 in the first inning.

Ortiz not convinced Bonds a product of steroids

Count David Ortiz among those who isn't convinced Barry Bonds used illegal performance-enhancing drugs -- or if they really helped the San Francisco Giants outfielder make his run at Hank Aaron's home run record.

"To hit the ball, the guy makes it look easy, but it ain't. I don't know how you can have that swing, consistently. I don't know how steroids can do that," Ortiz told the Boston Herald. "There are supposed to be guys using steroids in the game, and there's nobody close to Barry Bonds. What's that mean? He was using the best [stuff]? Know what I'm saying?"

The Boston Red Sox designated hitter told the Herald that no one has proven that Bonds knowingly used steroids or other performance-enhancing substances -- and that even if it were proven, he's not sure it has made a difference.

"I don't look at it like that. I look at it hitting-wise, because I don't know what steroids can do to you as a baseball player. You've still got to swing the bat, man," Ortiz said. "If I ever use steroids, and then I know what the difference can be and I'm using them, I'll tell you, 'Yeah, whatever,' but I don't know what the feelings are when you use the steroids. But I can tell you how it feels to pull yourself together to swing the bat."
In fact, Ortiz isn't 100 percent certain he hasn't taken steroids himself. He told the Herald that when he was a young player in the Dominican Republic, he used to drink protein shakes for sale there. He explained he no longer does so because he can't be sure they don't include banned substances.

I either want to see someone bean BB in the head and knock him out of baseball or have him get the record. There are few things more sickening in sports than letting a travesty like this continue to drag out. Selig is spineless and optionless and I am just tired of hearing about it.

I'm in the minority but I like Bonds. He is a great player and was one when he was 175 pounds playing for the Pirates too. It is ashame what he has done ruins everything he accomplished before he hit 73 HR's. I also like Floyd Mayweather, Michael Vick, and numerous other assholes too.

Well, I'm not convinced that Bonds is the "asshole" he's made out to be. But I feel fairly confident that he's a roid-head. And I have absolutely ZERO respect for roid-heads. Fuck 'em if they ain't got a prescription.

See, I agree with you in part because I used to like Bonds as well when he was with the Pirates. It was only after that when he decided to "cheat" that I began to hate him.

On your other notes, I don't have a preference when it comes to Mayweather but I sure was rooting for him Saturday night. How in the hell do you let Golden Girl Productions host a fight in which De La Hoya is participating? Yeah, thats good for boxing's image.

On Vick, I always disliked him and Marcus but they are both off the hook now. No longer will people think of all the stupid shit they've done when they here Virginia Tech, instead they will think of the shooting.

It's nice that everyone focuses on Bonds -- who, remember, has never tested positive for steroids, despite being probably the most-tested athlete in history -- while ignoring the impact steroids have had on pitchers.

The double standard has little to do with drugs, and everything to do with what a repugnant, disagreeable shite Mr. Bonds is. Well, fine and dandy, and I agree that he is, but since when has this been a valid reason to ignore someone's accomplishments? Selig is a self-righteous idiot. He needs to celebrate Bonds with the same vigor that he will celebrate the next (likely roid-enhanced) 300-game winning pitcher.

And what pitchers who are close to 300 wins have tested positive for steroids?
