Wednesday, January 31, 2007

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Barry Bonds gave the San Francisco Giants the right to terminate his one-year, $15.8 million contract if he is indicted. The unusual provision, included in the deal that was completed Monday night, protects the team in case Bonds is charged in the federal government?s steroids investigation.

Magowan sends letter to fans about Bonds

JANIE McCAULEY

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Giants owner Peter Magowan sent a letter to about 27,000 season-ticket holders this week explaining why the club decided to re-sign free agent slugger Barry Bonds for another season.
"The process of negotiating this contract was complex, lengthy and highly unconventional," Magowan wrote Monday in his letter, obtained by The Associated Press on Friday. "This decision was not taken lightly and we spent significant time evaluating all of the elements and circumstances surrounding the negotiations before we made a final determination to move forward."

No end in sight for Bonds affair
He's upset terms became public
ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES

It would seem that a player would be delighted if the commissioner's office struck from a contract he signed a clause that benefited the club and not the player. That's what happened with the contract that Barry Bonds signed last Monday with the San Francisco Giants.
But is Bonds happy? No, he is not.

Not that I'm siding with Bonds, because I'm clearly not, but why do the media always have to publicize contracts between athletes and their organizations. When this informatioan became public knowledge professional sports went in the toilet.

well publicized contacts have certainly changed a few aspects of the game, for one, as a fan I know what they are being paid and I feel it's thier duty to entertain me. Now for Bonds, the Giants are in a bad spot, for anyone to say "I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND OUT HE WAS IN A STEROIDS SCANDAL" is pretty much a lie, the Giants knew it, and they certainly didn't care when they were in the world series.

Get the contract issues resolved, you rode his bat into the post season and didn't care then, don't try to care now.

well at the amount of money that is getting thrown around, the sensationalist press will find a way to report it.

But more importantly (and probably more to the point), these organizations want other good players to realize that they will pay millions to get them there. Fans want to know that these organizations want to win, etc, so it makes a certain amount of sense for these teams to say "well we are paying whoever 8 million a year, he won 20 games last year and he might be the missing piece".....

as horrible as it will be for BB to have the record Bud is making a mistake by treating this like "just another record" this is probably the greatest record in all of sports, IMO and Bud should be there when BB breaks it and he should shake his hand even though he hates the fact that he now has the record

Agree.

This is the penultimate record in American sports.
