Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti Argues Michigan Shouldn’t Receive Further Penalties for Sign Stealing in Letter to NCAA
Tony Petitti confirmed he sent a letter to the NCAA Committee on Infractions regarding Michigan's sign-stealing scandal but declined to comment on the letter's content.
At Big Ten Media Days, Petitti confirmed he sent a letter to the NCAA Committee on Infractions. However, he declined to comment on the contents of the letter on Tuesday.
"We did submit a letter," he said. "It's not uncommon in proceedings for a conference office to weigh in. I'm not gonna address what the contents of the letter we sent are, and because it's an ongoing process, I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment whether (the punishment) is enough or not while there are individuals deliberating. I don't think that's the right thing to do in the process."

Look at that face. I see fear. This guy knows that he probably has guaranteed that his contract will not be renewed and may indeed be terminated by vote sooner. Just not what the B1G needs in the current college athletics environment. Disappointing behavior.

"I think it's pretty much we won't be playing a championship game if we go to 24. That's been pretty settled," Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday.
"In terms of when we make decisions as a league, are we going to support 24? That's where you start the conversations – are you willing to give up your championship game to have the expanded playoff? There's discussion about it now, when you talk to the coaches who have played in the game as they get ready for the postseason. There are a lot of conflicting incentives – it's still very powerful to win a Big Ten championship, and teams play hard; they want to win that game. But you're talking about a pretty tough journey to go all the way through. And where you're playing next, and what happens if they lose that game, they don't get a bye, and they have to go play relatively quickly.
"So, we've just gotten past that, and overall, if we can expand the playoff and have the access we need, we'd be willing to make that trade. As great as our championship game is, it's been wildly successful, and we've had incredible games the last couple of seasons. But I still think we're willing to do that because we believe that access is still the most important thing."
Just sayin': I'd rather keep the B1GCG, freeze the CFPs at 16 teams (or less).

16 teams is the ideal max that I've laid out before.
-No bye week bullshit.
-No Conference Champ games either, unless it can be fit in extra as in starting the schedule a week earlier.
-Eliminate one of the "preseason" games.
-Play 10 conference games, for every conference.
-First 2 rounds on campus. Then major bowl locations for the rest.
Keep money in the communities as long as possible. The corporations are fucking up a great sport.

Well the hardest part to making it perfect would be realignment again and 4 conferences of 16 teams each. Let's face it NIL has made this a professional sport and there's money everywhere. Yet there are teams in, I'll call it by is old moniker, Division 1A, that do not stand a snowballs chance in hell of ever reaching a final let alone winning one.
So the new 1A becomes a 64 team league, 16 make the playoff, which will still be the same teams every year, right? A few stragglers will show up from time to time of course. The rest are in Division 1B. The MAC, WAC, SUN BELT etc. whom are also going to be able to benefit from NIL as well, if they run the business correctly.
Now for the kicker: the worst team from each of the 4 conferences gets relegated each February and the best 4 from the 1B lot move up. Gone would be the days of terrible athletic departments being the annual conferences doormats, but still getting to share the conferences bounty which they never contribute to. You suck too bad this year? Adios. Maybe next year. And, hey fresh blood once in awhile keeps things interesting.
Obviously 1A is the NFL minor leagues at this point let's not kid ourselves and football would have to separate from the other sports due to the relegation rule but so what? Doesn't mean they lose school affiliation so fans and alumni don't have to switch allegiance, that would be brutal.
TV rights, conferences payouts and the possible school issues are still going to exist.
Now these are just the lunatic rumblings of a fringe fanatic that lives for college football and all things Buckeyes so there's a whole crap load of T's and I's that the nerds would have to sort out but you get the picture I think? (FYI this rambling and napkin spitballing should all be read in Jack Burtons voice for posterity)

Just sayin': Yeah, you gave a good case why that would be so difficult that it probably will never happen. The B1G and SEC would never agree to give up their TV contract advantage over the BIG XII and ACC. If you tried to trim the B1G to 16 teams; you couldn't get 2 teams to volunteer to go to another conference like the BIG XII or ACC that gives out lesser TV money. These schools would sue the conferences and/or the NCAA. In addition, fans and alumni wouldn't be happy as many "traditional rivaries" would be lost.

Just sayin': The conference championship games bring in a lot of TV money, and it is nice to have a definitive conference champion. Notre Dame shouldn't get a pass; maybe there should be a CFP Committee policy when ranking teams 1) give bonus consideration to any team for a conference championship game win and 2) not count a conference championship game loss against any team.
