Atlantic Coast Conference (Official Thread)

The ND scheduling agreement was a mistake. With how weak the conference is, they are guaranteed 4-5 extra OOC losses.

But then the Domers keep all the glory when they go get blown out in the playoffs.

If they were scheduling high school teams, at least they could fake it for the regular season like the Big 12.

I know the ACC is a joke, but Wake Forest and they're staring QB, Sam Hartman are a pretty good story(https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2018/sam-hartman-44160). Hartman was on season 2 of the Netflix shoe QB1(with Justin Fields)https://247sports.com/college/wake-...rtman-by-watching-QB1-121034671/#121034671_12. He went from a powerhouse HS in NC, to a program being created from the ground up in a suburb of Charleston, SC that mustered 1 win. And now fast forward and he's starting for a basketball school that has a real chance at winning the ACC in football.

I remember watching him on QB1 and thinking how difficult that transition in HS must have been for him. The episode where they are practicing in a swampy field… he had to be wondering what he did to piss off God to have ended up there.

ACC scraps their divisions. 3-3-5 schedule and top two by win percentage play in the championship game.

https://theacc.com/news/2022/6/28/acc-announces-football-schedule-model-for-2023-26.aspx

Just in case anyone cares.

The three primary partners for each ACC team are as follows:

Boston College: Miami, Pitt, Syracuse
Clemson: Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State
Duke: North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest
Florida State: Clemson, Miami, Syracuse
Georgia Tech: Clemson, Louisville, Wake Forest
Louisville: Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia
Miami: Boston College, Florida State, Louisville

Pitt: Boston College, Syracuse, Virginia Tech
Syracuse: Boston College, Florida State, Pitt
Virginia: Louisville, North Carolina, Virginia Tech

Wake Forest: Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech

But in reality...

This doesn't seem like a complete clusterfuck at all.

Anyone catch Phillips press conference this morning? I didn't get to see it, but everything I've seen online indicates it was bad.

Others have tweeted about some of his tone-deaf moments, but to me the worst parts were when he said things that were demonstrably false.

He said something to the effect of believing that the ACC is still the best conference.
By what metric? Is there ANY way that you can define "best" (that isn't utterly nonsensical) that would make that a true statement? I highly doubt it.

He also said that, "college sports has never been elitist or singularly commercial".

First of all, in what world do these two things belong on the same continuum? There is a deeply philosophical point here that I will steer clear of, but to call it ignorant does not go nearly far enough. But far more importantly, to say that college sports has never been elitist is as false as any statement could be. Amateurism, which was the very heart of college athletics from the start, was borne of the belief in Europe that their club sports were superior for their amateurism because only the nobles could afford to be amateurs. They never said that last part out loud, but there can be no doubt that the belief in the superiority of amateurism begins and ends there. The wealthy Americans who pined to be a part of an American Aristocracy did their best to establish customs that would lead to a de facto aristocracy. They knew it could never be codified into law; and they guarded it all the more jealously because of that. These were the people who were sending their sons to colleges and universities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when college sports grew into a spectator sport. And these would-be aristocrats are still guarding their faux nobility (fauxbility?), only they are doing it in ways that are insidious to the point of downright evil. Far worse than what they did back in the day, and yes, some of what they did back in the day was pretty bad.

Many who believe in amateurism do it from an honest place. Few people know that this value that we've inherited from the sport we love was first a value of those who sought only to protect their elite status. That does not make it any less true. Amateurism's birth in elitism is a fact, whether Jim Phillips is aware of it or not.
