Associate HC/DL Coach Larry Johnson Sr. (Official Thread)

Watching the tcun and Bama game is making me wonder. I know coach Johnson likes the smaller and faster DT's. That works well agaionst teams weaker o lines. Both Bama and tcun have larger DT's and I think this would be a good direction for coach LJ to take,.

LJsr has had a number of issues the last few years. The size of the DTs is one of them. Among not utilizing the Jack which is a major position in the Knowles defense, properly rotating anymore, even using the Rushmen package anymore on passing downs, developing pass rushing DEs, developing DL as a whole. Yeah, I can honestly ad a few more, but we all get the hint. LJsr‘s seat should be as hot as Days, he’s gotten some of the best talent in the country and turned them into MAC level players

Only part of this I disagree with is the Jack. You need to play defense to your strength. JT and Sawyer are still strong, even if they didn’t hit the heights we hoped. And playing Sawyer at the Jack was a disaster.
Now, with the way we’ve been recruiting DE lately, we may be forced to a Jack in the near future.

I'm not saying play Jack Sawyer at the Jack, but the players who were brought in to play the Jack should be playing it(i.e. Melton, Mickens and Reese). Jack and JT don't have to play at the same time, one can go inside, and they also can be rotated in. It's not like they've done so much when playing at the same time. There's a position that's supposed to be for rushing the passer, a skill that neither Sawyer or JT have consistently shown. A major key to Knowles' defense pre- OSU was the ability to put relentless pressure on the QB, and there are very few games that the defense has done that without having to blitz players from the back end. They already have the Jack type players on the roster now, and they're being underutilized by a DL coach not willing to evolve. Heck, IMO Hicks should've been able to line up at the Jack at times to create pressure as well.

Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson received the Ohio Gold Award, which the chapter awards annually to someone who has made a major impact on college football in the state of Ohio. Johnson became the second consecutive active Ohio State coach to win the award, joining Ryan Day, who was honored at the 2023 banquet.

My thing is, are those issues he had LJsr"s fault? If we've looked at his DT recruiting, he's always started with the elite guys first, but you know how hard it was competing against the south for those guys, especially knowing how much they value trench players. Those southern schools incentivized recruiting bigs on a way higher level than we have for years, I don't know if that is an indictment on LJsr, especially if we had them up to Columbus multiple times for some of those guys, at some point whoever is the closer had to seal the deal and they couldn't. I think he doesn't get enough credit for coaching up developmental guys and getting them to play at a high level, guys like Dre'Mont Jones, Davon Hamilton and Robert Landers.

In terms of the other issues, I'll say this, as a coach, what you do and what you have done is all based on how it fits in the defense, some DCs are for some style of play and some aren't, some guys are very particular on how they want their fits to look. Some guys want the defensive line to make as many plays and be disruptive as possible and some guys are very strict on the roles of their players play and how they do it. I think Knowles is one of those guys who is strict in how his fits should look and LJsr has to tweak how his guys play to fit what Knowles is trying to do as a whole in order for the defense to be successful, this means less splash plays and more routine get off the field plays and thats why our defense was top 3. Look a the difference between the 2019 team vs the 2023 team and style of play, one was aggressive and the other was more conservative, LJsr had to adjust his guys to the preferred style of play. Just an observation....

To be fair, my comments were said pretty close to after the Cotton bowl loss, so I wasn't the most rational

But you made some good points that we can agree to disagree on. When it comes to the DL recruiting, LJsr has always been the closer from what I've followed. So the losses are on him, but recently they fall more on lack of competitive NIL deals. Btw, Jones was not a developmental guy, he was one of the highest rated DL OSU has signed(top 100 nationally and top 5 in OH). And though its nice to talk about the developmental guys, OSU shouldn't have to rely on developmental guys. And it's ironic to bring developmental guys as an argument for him, but Stud was knocked for constantly taking developmental guys, though he also had success with them... LJsr was brought in to land elite talent, and he never relied on Southern recruits, his bread and butter was always the East coast(NJ to VA), he hasn't even consistently landed those guys.

You always provide great insight, and you're one of the posters who I look forward to hearing from regarding talent, but tbh LJsr has not coached his room to the level of some of Knowles' previous defenses. And a lot of that has to do with a major lack of a pass rush from 2 star DEs, who look out of position on so many plays. Looking at Knowles' defenses at fakeOSU, they had a lot of splash plays from their DEs getting to the QB, and forcing 3rd and long, 2nd and long. JT and Sawyer seemed to just stare at the QB for most of the season when the ball was snapped. Either they were out of position, or they weren't coached properly. My thoughts about the DL were that the Jack was supposed to be the WDE who focused on rushing the passer, and OSU hasn't had that since Knowles arrived, and that's because LJsr wasn't a fan of the position. If that's true, than he deserves blame. I think the scUM game may have ended differently if OSU had an actual consistent pressure on McCarthy, and there was a rotation between a Jack and SDE. JT can play inside and outside, slide him to DT and play one of the lighter DEs. That's also just my opinion and observation.

Now my thoughts on him have changed a little since my previous post, as he's stepping up his efforts in 2025, and NIL has helped immensely finally.
