Associate HC/DL Coach Larry Johnson Sr. (Official Thread)

So he goes from consistently playing his third string guys in critical situations last season (the entirety of a Notre Dame 95 yard scoring drive, for example), so much that Day said it had to change in the off-season, to not rotating his DEs at all?

Whatever LJ Sr. was in the past, I really don’t think he’s putting Ohio State in the best position to be elite with his current contributions, from sabotaging a major component of Knowles’s defense (the Jack, which LJ Sr is completely dismissive of in interviews and Knowles says the DL is its own world when asked, I suspect that LJ Sr demanded four DL on the field, which resulted in the failed Sawyer at Jack experiment last season, which they have seemingly scrapped entirely this season), to a lack of consistent QB pressure from the group in every game so far this season (I suspect, similar to Studrawa being bad at coaching RPO blocking schemes, LJ Sr simply is not good at coaching the players to maintain their gap assignments while getting after the quarterback, and when he is told that they need to be gap sound, he responds similarly to the rotation critique and completely over compensates rather than finding an appropriate balance), to mishandling the DL rotation from one extreme to the other, to a recruiting world that is leaving him behind (although, thankfully, he still manages to find his guys more often than not), I will continue to beat the drum that they need to transition to the next chapter sooner rather than later.

I think not getting the extra coaches has screwed them there. There was talk of hiring his replacement and having him take a step back but still be involved in recruiting and technique till then

What are the odds that Day is calling LJ into his office and asking how they are supposed to field a team without recruiting defensive linemen?
0.0 and that would be a godawful way to handle it in any case.

It's not like they didn't try. It's not like they didn't try to lead these kids to the right school. Money talks more apparently.

IF a 17 year old wants to chase the money and go 7-5 in the Pull-On Weed Eater bowl, so be it. That's not a kid you want at Ohio State.

I’m not expecting that’s actually how he have the discussion. But it still needs to be had. I like the swings for the big guys, but you need to have a backup plan for when kids flip or chase the money. Did LJ not build any relationships with next tier guys? You can’t just throw up your hands and say everyone left to chase money I guess we will only have 1 DL in the class this year. He has to find the kids that want to be buckeyes.

Who says it needs to be had? You? Who are you, exactly?

So that's the bar? To be on this staff you need to be the best at the position?
This is Ohio State right?

Shouldn’t be batting a what 20% clip (if Houston stays) between two cycles on edge rushers you want.

no one else is concerned with the total lack of DE recruiting for two straight years? Again, if we lose JTT and Jack I’m not sure anyone’s really grasping what that leaves us with. Then considering we don’t seem too active at the position in the portal and we have 3 defensive ends total.
