Are Buckeye fans spoiled?

Sadly, to an extent, generaladm has a point. I've been to a boat load of games over the last decade and it seems when we play a smaller team, the crowd is only there to be seen or "in the scene" as it were. These are the games that supposedly people who never get to attend the big games can actually get tickets for, and the crowd is awful quiet.

When the Bucks are on defense, I should never be able to speak to the person next to me in a tone more suited for the library, but often, it seems that I can.

Last year, I didn't go to the stadium once. I stayed out in the RV lot, tailgated and watched on the dozens of bigscreens people bring with them. I actually had a better time.
Can I have your Scum tickets? I promise to yell a lot.

Basketball Yes (I blame it on Value City Arena).... Football No.....

Good point. VCA is humongous for a college basketball venue. That comes with it's pros and cons. When it's packed for a big game, it can be really intimidating for a visiting team. For lesser games, it's hard to fill 20,000 seats. I remember reading last season how the players enjoyed the games in St. John's because the atmosphere was livelier.

You would really lose 3 NC games than root for Noah??? sounds dumb to me.

I was joking, of course. But I really, really, really, really can't stand that rat-faced cocksucker. I've heard his teammates from UF say that everyone on the team hated him, but put up with it cause he could ball.

I think the biggest problem with VCA is how small the slant is near the court. If you look at other basketball arenas it looks like the fans are piled on top of each other on the sidelines. I guess it has to do with being a hockey venue also.... Also, A few years ago I got invited to see a game in a luxury box. It was a cool experience but i felt like I was watching the game on TV. It felt weird to cheer out loud like a fan should at a game.

Actually one of the loudest BB games I've ever been to was against Dayton in the N.I.T. but that was becasue Dayton was very loud and we had to drowned them out. As for football there are times when it's gets too quiet. I remember a 56-3('82 or '83) Northwestern blowout that turned into the largest paper wad fight in history. It started in about 7A and within minutes it was half the stadium. We used free paper line-ups that were given to you as you entered the stadium. After several minutes the players were even looking up. It was fun though.

I've been to one football game, the '05 Iowa game, and it stayed loud as hell in there the whole time! I remember getting goosebumps on 3rd down when they play "Hells Bells", or when Santonio had the long catch and run. Great atmosphere, I think this year the game with the best atmosphere will be the scUM game, as it always is, especially since it will be RR vs JT I and we may be undefeated at that point. I don't think it will be as good as '06, but it will be lively! And the USC game at home next year.....

As for the '05 Iowa game: I was there with my younger brother. He and I never know what the crowd sounded like when we're at a game, because we seldom ever hear anything but ourselves. The people around us didn't make any where near as much noise as we did.

As for the best atmosphere in '08: I agree that it will be The Game.

But the weirdest atmosphere will probably be for the Troy game. OSU will, IMHO, have just beaten USC the week before. Coming home to play Troy (or anybody) after beating 'the men of troy' will have the crowd jacked sky high to start the game. After that, Troy's suspect run defense will give the crowd plenty to cheer about for the 1st quarter. After that, it will get quiet because of the beat-down and ensuing liberal substitutions. The quiet will seem eerie compared to the deafening roar that will greet the conquering heroes when they take the field.

Of course the crowd is going to be up for games like that. Any team's fans are going to go crazy when they're watching an epic battle, even if it's a Div. III game. As an example, I went to last year's Wisky game, one of the closer games last season. The only time when the crowd really went nuts was when Beanie scored his first TD to take back the lead. And even then it only lasted for a short time. I had a hard time finding someone to give me a high five. I don't expect absolute bedlam when we play a weaker OOC game, but when the conference big boys come into our house, shouldn't the crowd make them yearn to get back on the bus? Respectfully, of course. Not like State Penn hooligans.

Maybe we need to know what you mean by enthusiasm. I do my yelling and applauding and I stand up on big plays, but I'm glad I haven't had any seats recently where I have to contend with someone who wants to stand up, ala T A&M, the whole damn game. Different strokes, different folks. Even as a student in the 60's I preferred to sit and watch and take the game in as oppossed to being someone who cut loose with entensity. Did that deminish my love for Buckeye football? I don't think so.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the kind of fan he's talking about are those that ask people to sit down when the other team has the ball and it's 3rd down. This has never happened to me (my ferocity probably scares such weenies); but I've heard of it. I'm going to go farther out on the limb and guess that such people wouldn't be caught dead at a place like Buckeye Planet.

I don't mind standing for most of the game, like Texas '05, TSUN '06, or PSU '07 (until the 3rd quarter ).

And I don't have a problem with people sitting. But I believe in yelling from the time the opposing offense approaches the line of scrimmage until they hike the ball (regardless of down and distance), until the Buckeyes are up by about 4 TDs.

Fans that are at the 'Shoe should take part in creating the home field advantage, and understand when to yell - many don't show enough understanding of that. Just waiting for Hell's Bells to know when to make noise doesn't cut it.

I will say I should have thought about the title of the thread a little more, it seems to dominate the discussion. I went to two games last year, Kent St. and Wisky. For KSU, I wasn't expecting a raucous crowd at all. It was very appropriate for the game, people reacted to the big plays, like Hartline's punt return and 3rd downs. Of course it died down in the 2nd half. The most entertaining part was a few guys from Kent sitting near us who knew all the Flashes by name and were annoying some of the other fans. There were some Bucks fans in our row who were a) squeezing in a couple people who didn't have seats there, and b) talking on cell phones and generally not paying attention to the game. That I have a problem with. Even if I'm watching a game by myself at home, I'm not answering the phone unless it's my mother. I don't mind if people need to take an important call, but if you're going to chit-chat, take it to the concourse.

Now for the Wisky game, I was expecting a more electric atmosphere. It was a little bit better, but I was surprised by how little. It was a good, close game, the first one that was in doubt, but the crowd never really got on a roll. They still cheered for the big plays, but when UW was leading in the 3rd, when the team really needed the crowd behind them, many people chose to sit and complain, rather than stand and cheer. For a bitter conference rival and record setting streak on the line, I would hope for a little more. I don't expect everyone to stand and yell the whole game, just be into the game. I get the feeling that seat location has a lot to do with it. Both games I was surrounded by middle aged suburbanites; it was like a country club outing. I guess if I had to pinpoint why I started this thread in the first place, it would be because of the people who just aren't into the games. I certainly understand that many people have small children with them, or just want to quietly watch the game; that's fine. But the people who talk on cell phones or sit and talk about everything except the game should find something else to do on Saturdays. There are tons of people who would love to be in the stadium cheering on their Bucks.

I encourage people to take this thread wherever they want. Talk about your favorite experiences, compare our fans to other team's, funny fan stories, etc. It's an interesting subject, the symbiotic relationship between a team and their fans.

I noticed this thread a while ago but never bothered to read it because i assumed it was about our success, which the answer is of course we're spoiled with success. then i started raeding general's first comment and i got a little irritated. however, the more i think about it there has definitaly been games that i have been at where the level is way down. the texas 05 was very dissapointing in my opinion. it was probably where i was sitting but i definitaly remmeber people aroudn me getting irritated whenever i would yell
" :oh:". i think there are a lot of factors to it but i was pretty sure the stadium was going to fall down when we beat michigan in 2006.
