Are Buckeye fans spoiled?

You can't have the kind of success we've had during this decade and not be spoiled. I think most of us expect nothing less than the Big 10 title and a shot at the NC pretty much every year. With the talent JT is collecting, I don't see that changing any time soon.

Does that translate into a lack of enthusiasm from the fans? I think we all know there will always be some stick-in-the-muds at games. But for the most part, Buckeye fans are pretty darn passionate. I was at the MSU game last year and I thought the pregame atmosphere was awesome. But the game itself was scary toward the end with the way our Offense fell apart. Those types of games it's hard to fault the crowd too much. When we were on D, most people were pretty loud. On O it was like the crowd was collectively holding their breath at the end. Just depends on the type of game.

Now is the crowd much quieter for the YSUs of the world? Of course. But I think the atmosphere is expected to be toned down for that type of game.

My brother was at the #1 vs. #2 scUM game a few years back and sat in the stuffy, midfield section with a client of his. Usually, he says those folks are very quiet. But he said the electicity in the stadium for that entire game was indescribable! He couldn't even hear himself talk. How could you not be standing and screaming the whole time?

I guess my point is, just because fans aren't standing and screaming the entire game, doesn't necessarily mean they're any less passionate about their Bucks! Just depends on the type of game.

And I have to say this as well...I've lived in quite a few different cities in my adult life and everywhere I've went, I've found passionate Buckeye fans! It might just be my experience, but the Buckeye fans I seem to meet aren't just casual rooters...they're die-hards! I love it!

As always,
It's a great time to be a Buckeye!

spoiled? umm..yeah...it comes with a word called winning. something happens when you start winning, its called expectations. if you take any team that doesnt win and make them winners they will be spoiled just the same.

It's also called jumping on the bandwagon. Having taught high school boys for 30 years I've seen a parade of bandwagons, kids in Ohio with FSU, Miami, Va Tech, Penn State, BC, USC, UNC and UK (basketball) spirit wear. It's also been interesting to watch the decline in ND and UM hats and Ts. Kids gravitate toward whomever is hot now. God bless Tress.

With all the success, shouldn't the fans be even more enthusiastic to see the games live? When you know that you're going to see one of the best teams in the country, or perhaps the team's history, shoudn't that just increase the excitement? Here's an interesting thought: the players work their butts off nearly every day of the year to be the best they can be on the playing field. They do it for themselves, their families, friends, coaches, teammates, and the fans. When a fan attends a game, do they have an responsibility to positively affect the atmosphere, or does their obligation end when they buy the ticket?

(1) That depends entirely on the definition of "enthusiastic". Yes, it creates a huge demand for tickets. If you look at other places, they advertise to sell tickets. I've never seen a commercial for OSU football tickets. But...

(2) It creates a higher threshold for "excitement". Humans are nothing if not adaptable. When they are in a more stimulating environment, if they are not autistic, they adapt to it. Iowa fans I know would be thrilled with a winning season this year. They cheer vociferously for narrow wins over Northwestern. OSU fans need more to stimulate their overworked excitement glands.

Are Buckeye fans spoiled? Yeah. We've had one heck of a run recently.

Here's what irks me. Some "fans" lose perspective when the Buckeyes are losing or have lost. A new QB throws a pick, someone fumbles, the other team scores...you'd think the world came to an end. A coach who was nearly divine at the start of the game is now the most stupid person alive. The running back whose praises the fan has been singing now shouldn't have been in the game at all. After all, "genius fan" said he thought the guy might fumble in 2007, when the player was in high school.

I have no time for spoiled fans who lose perspective. There's a lot of bad things in the world today that are lots worse than losing a football game. We're gonna lose now and then. Bad things happen.

Thank goodness most Buckeye fans keep their perspective and see the glass "nearly full".

Great points, Steve! I too get sick of people who start to grouse about players and coaches the second they show they're not perfect. Over the past two years, it's been "Beanie can't hold on to the ball!", "Boeckman can't win games!", "Tressel can't call a game!", coming in two of the best seasons in the last 30 years! It's rediculous and they do an about face as soon as things rebound. It would be nice if more fans would learn about the game, but it's not going to happen. At least we're all happy when they win!

Old enough to have seen every Buckeye Heisman winner except Horvath play in Ohio Stadium.

Just for shits and grins, what do you call T's, hats, sweats? The "book store" at most high schools in Cincinnati still direct you to their "spirit wear."

When did they throw out the Illinois loss from last year?

What Illinois game? I don't remember any Illinois game... :(

Dammit. Well, still... 3 of the last 5 losses are to the national champ and the other 2 are to BCS teams. Not that there are any moral victories when we're talking about a powerhouse like Ohio State, but we're not losing to Appy State or Dirty Underpants University.
