Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

Bought the 13" Retina MacBook Pro last weekend. Happy Father's Day, self.

Really impressive piece of hardware. Used to own a PowerBook G3 back in the OS 8/9 days and switched to Linux about the time OS X launched. This is my first Apple computer in the home since maybe 1999. Very happy with it. Forcetouch pad and the keyboard are incredible.

I will say though, Apple should put a note card or some such on the anti-static film that sits between the lid and the keyboard, so you can't miss it when you unbox it. On this note card they should print all the different finger gestures for swiping and scrolling and pinching that work on the trackpad, because having not used a MacBook in however many years Apple's been making the pads this way, it was crazy frustrating learning by trial and error, especially since scroll bars are off in everything by default.

My wife has a 2006 model MacBook Pro. She is unable to upgrade OS X beyond Mountain Lion or something like that.

When she borrows my late 2014 MBP she is completely befuddled by the trackpad. Your anti-static film idea is a good one. I think they could also stand to have a Tips app like they have now on iOS. It's not that you can't get around without a tutorial, are just so many cool little things that the machine and OS can do that many people just may not discover on their own. I switched to my MBP from Windows in January. I think the main reason I picked up the gestures rather quickly is because they are similar to those on an iPad and I had been using one of those for about two years.

Lifetime Windows user just made the plunge and bought the latest Macbook Pro and scrapped the Toshiba

#SendHelp

Took the plunge in January. Kept my Windows 7 machine handy in case I needed to do something I couldn't figure out how to do on the Mac. Didn't end up touching the old thing after day two.

Top things you can do to make the transition a little easier:
  • Familiarize yourself with the Disk Utility app - makes formatting a partitioning hard drives a breeze. Used it in conjunction with...
  • Time Machine - once I figured out how this work it made me more open to trying things out because I knew I was working with a net. They make it sound like TimeMachine can only be used with a hard drive that's constantly connected, but that's not the case. I use it with an external drive and just make sure I connect it and do a backup first before I make any kind of significant changes to my setup.
  • AppCleaner - uninstalling apps is different from how it's done on Windows machines. Most of them, you just click and drag from the Applications folder to the trash. What they don't tell you is that this can sometimes leave behind preference files and other garbage. AppCleaner helps make sure you get rid of everything when you delete an app.
Once you have those things in place, it's pretty safe to play around with most of the GUI-facing settings. It's pretty tough to break anything since Apple tends to hide most of the files and settings that shouldn't be touched by non-hardcore users.

Whenever I have a friend or family member with a Mac that asks me for help with something, I make sure to download App Cleaner for them and tell them that's how to get rid of applications they don't want anymore. I really can't believe that Apple hasn't bought that particular app for itself as a Utility.

Windows functions in a similar matter. Settings files and other crap are often left after a uninstall.

My iPad is giving me fits. It has become slow and less responsive. Safari constantly crashes on me and gives me an error saying "there was a problem with this webpage so it was reloaded". Many webpages fail to load entirely as I scroll through them. BP is a struggle with these problems, especially for the game thread. Chrome isn't any better. It is 3 years old now, so I just wonder if it is dying. Has anyone else seen theses issues?

What version of iOS are you on? iOS 9 is supposed to help older iPads run more efficiently than previous versions of the firmware. If you have an iPad 2 or newer, make sure you're up-to-date. I've seen a bit of a difference on my iPad 2.

Also, when was the last time you did a full restore? Even if you're already up to date on iOS, it might not be a bad idea to do a backup and then a complete restore.

I am at iOS 9.0.1 but debating on going to 9.0.2

I am at iOS 9.0.1 but debating on going to 9.0.2. It is an iPad 2. I have never done a backup or full restore. I just use it for web, mail, and some apps. I have some pictures on it, but nothing heavy duty.

So I did the upgrade to the latest iOS and I think it is worse than ever. It is almost unusable on BP. It gave the error multiple times loading this page and trying to type this response. I even got a new error that was a white screen saying the page had multiple errors on it and could not be loaded. :throws iPad:
